SPECIAL KAVIENG/NEW HANOVER DIVE EXPEDITION

We have an opportunity to host another of our very popular expeditions to new Ireland in association with Lissenung Dive Resort and Clem’s Place in New Hanover in the first or second week of November….this time with a difference!

Proposal is for a 6 DAY/5 NIGHT PROGRAM with 9 boat dives (and optional night dives)
Day 1 – Flight to Kavieng, overnight at Lissenung. (Optional night dive on the house reef)

Day 2 – Dive Albatross Passage, overnight at Lissenung. (3 dives, optional night dive on the house reef)

Day 3 – Trip to Sanko Maru & submarine, overnight at Clem’s Place/Tunnung Island. (2 dives, optional night dive)

Day 4 – Trip to Chapman’s Reef, return to Tunnung Island, overnight. (2 dives)

Day 5 – Dive Sanko Maru or other sites, return to Lissenung and overnight. (2 dives)

Day 6 – Flight to Port Moresby.

It began on one of my expeditions, with a request from the women of Gasmata for a Haus Mama (Women’s Centre) to be built so they had a place dedicated to their interests and needs.
We agreed - if they built the structure, I’d assist in delivering their ‘needs’
- maternal health awareness to combat increasing maternal mortality rates
- a communal kitchen to support women staying in maternity wards or fundraising
- educational workshops on income revenue streams

The Sivirho Mama Haus, was built 3 months later. It has 2 rooms for expectant mother’s from the hills while awaiting delivery, A kitchen and a meeting room to host workshops and fundraisers.

I returned last Feb and conducted our first cooking & sewing workshops. With the help of my partners and public fundraising we equipped the centre with two ovens, and a water tank, but most importantly, we taught 120 women how use the ovens to and make a variety of recipes. We used readily available ingredients and kept the focus on ways to increase earning potential for each woman . Each of these women, likely to pass their knowledge to three more women when she returns home, making the impact reach estimate 480 women and girls.
In addition we used the centre to run clinics (I was a nurse in a former life before becoming a chef) to engage expectant mothers and health workers, provide birthing kits and raise discussion surrounding safe birth practices. My focus was initially maternal health and upskilling of women, but the response from the entire community was overwhelming it grew to envelop general sanitation and health conversations.
I have since been invited to Lovongai community by to deliver the same workshops and more June (next month).

My team and partners are focussing training in:
- cooking
- sewing
- carpentry & joinery
- sustainable conservation of resources
- outboard engine maintenance
- solor installation
- solar water pump install

My good friend Julia Sumerling today made my afternoon by sending me this great pics from 16 years ago, 2006. I had just gotten of the dive boats to pursue & build my dream to bring international tourism to our remote islands & stimulate the grassroots economy. What a long & exciting journey it has been. The friends we have made & those we have lost. 3 people in these pics have passed away. They have contributed to the story of my life. As l scrolled through these pics l am overwhelmed with emotions. Life is a short space of time given us to make a difference. The trinity of time; past, present & future allows us to use it wisely. Let us learn & cherish the past, live & enjoy the present with loved ones & change the course of the future in our own little ways. To anyone out there who has influenced the story of my life & has been part of my journey, l send out my hugs to you.🙏

As the new year approaches & preparations for celebrations are underway, I wonder what the new year will bring for us as a nation. PNG has gone through so much as a developing nation. The news continues to paint a bleak picture of this beautiful country we call home. Those who have not visited our shores are horrified with what they read & pledge never to visit. l dont blame them. Only the adventurous at heart who have dared to visit the 'Land of the unexpected" & have experienced the melanesian hospitality that permeates throughout our villages will testify that we arent so bad as one would think.
PNG has its share of problems, just like any other country in the world but you will be amazed at the friendliness of the people in our remote villages. Come visit us..& expect the unexpected hospitality the news doesnt tell you about. Happy new year PNG & the world.

The Sanko Maru… The wreck of this armed WWII Japanese freighter lays in shallow water off the fringing reef on the southern side of Tunnung Island. Sank by Allied B-25 Mitchell bombers in 1944, the wreck has become a testament to the rich waters of the Bismarck Sea and Pacific Ocean that sweep the north-west coast of New Hanover in New Ireland.
