Zimbabwe
We invite you to join us on this bespoke walking and canoeing safari.
This can be an extremely intense experience for the true naturalist and someone who likes to feel the challenge of nature.
This is not a "lodge". This is not a game drive. This is for people who understand Africa away from the standard brochure.
For the "Africaphile" who like their wildlife wild!

Victoria Falls. About two-thirds of the falls can be viewed from the Zimbabwean side and, while the falls are undoubtedly the star attraction there are other popular activities include scenic flights over the falls, bungee jumping off the Victoria Falls Bridge.
Chobe National Park boat cruises and game drives is a true wildlife paradise and one of the best national parks in Southern Africa. Just one peek at the variety of wildlife and lush vegetation and you will be mesmerized forever!
After Chobe we charter a flight into the magnificent Okavango Delta stretching over 15000 square kilometers. Commonly spotted animals include: lion, rhino, leopard, giraffe, hippos, elephants, crocodiles and countless species of bird.
This has to be on the bucket list.

Kokoda Trail 22-29 August 2023
Day 7 28/8/23

Out of Ofi Creek this morning and straight up onto Ioribaiwa Ridge. The Japanese last stand. This is where the Emperor instructed them to turn back. They could see Jackson airport security lights from here.
A lot of down hill today. APART from Imita Ridge.
A tricky descent down to Ioribaiwa Village. Stopping here for morning tea. Down again to Ua Ule Creek criss crossing 7-8 times arriving at Ua Ule Campsite for lunch.
Fuel up here as ahead is a brutal 2 hour climb onto Imita Ridge. It is head down and keep walking until told to stop. It’s a climb that certainly plays with the mind.
At the top more WWll history.
Another 2 ½ descent down an always muddy track as is on the south side of the hill. Arriving at Goodwater Campsite around 3:30pm.
They can smell the end now.

Kokoda Trail 22-29 August 2023
Day 8 29/8/23
Only a 2 hour walk to Owers Cnr tomorrow morning.
The group will be out around 830am. They will have phone cell coverage from around 10am. Will be back at the hotel around mid-day.
Cold drinks, birthday cake for Ernie as he turned 81 on the 21st August. We were not allowed to celebrate until he finished the trail. Chicken rolls, Chips and all the bad things you crave when you get off the track. Every trekker has climbed their own Mt Everest. They walked with dignity and respect. It was a pleasure to take you all across our “Bloody Track” here in Papua New Guinea.
The End
Bamahuta from Cara, all our PNG Trekking Adventures Crew and Pam.

Kokoda Trail 22-29 August 2023
Day 6 27/8/23

There is limited cell coverage on the top of the Maguli Ranges. A couple of real time photo’s came through yesterday.
Group going really well. We have:

Ernie: Jungle Rambo on the track 81yrs young
Andy: Forever the Gentleman on the track 76 yrs young
Brent: Filled his boot up with water instead of his water bottle in the dark. How does that happen!!!
Hannah: A roller coaster of emotions
Max: Eager to start in the morning he took off with someone else’s pack on his back. Again how does that happen!!!
Scott & David: All about the the WWll history. Going strong and having a ball.
Nikita & Anne: Laughing and smiling all the way.
Mark: The experienced Kokoda trekker. Loving it for the 3rd time.
Ed: What a privilege to walk with Max & Hannah. Memories being made.
Hannah, Anne& Ernie: Anything that moves is being photographed.

They have had a couple of down pours the odd afternoon. That is okay, need to have that experience of walking the track in the mud and rain.
No blisters, some preventative strapping happening.
Made it into Ofi Creek around 2:30pm this is a great time. Time to relax,a beautiful creek to soak weary tired bones.
“The group are super experienced trekkers and are smashing it”
Silas and our PNG Trekking Adventures crew are going well and are asking Cara why the trekkers aren’t complaining about how tough it is.
“One more sleep”

Kokoda Trail 22-29 August 2023
Day 5 26/8/23

Of course its another hill first up this morning onto Mission Ridge and Brigade Hill. Both areas are where there were brutal battles during the campaign. A moving service held here commemorating the Australian soldiers who lost their lives. A quick cuppa and a 2 hour descent to Menari Village. This is very hard on the legs, you think going up is tough, going down can be just as tough.
Stopping at Menari Village for lunch. Up, up to the lookout above the village, great views back over the mountain ranges they have walked across. Another 1 ½ hr downhill to the swamp. It is dry, thank goodness when its wet it is tough walking. This is the only extended flat area along the trail. The team made good time getting into Agulogo Campsite around 3:30pm.
They are having such a great time, there has been life time friends made. Its all about helping your mates. Everyone has a bad day on Kokoda, everyone has stepped up to the challenge.

Kokoda Trail 22-29 August 2023
Day 4 25/8/23

The group are becoming very efficient in the mornings now and in a routine. The first couple of mornings were a bit chaotic.
A heart stopper of a hill first up. They are climbing to the highest point along the track Mt Bellamy. Track is always wet and muddy on this side as well. They meander along the top of the ridge for a couple of hours before diverting off the track and enter the moss forest. This is a truly spectacular walk. The moss is so thick underneath it is like walking on carpet. After 2 hours they pop out at Myola. This was a major supply base for the Australians and where the biscuit bombers came in air dropping off supplies.
There are no trees and is a huge sparce area that you are looking over. Cara took the group out from under the canopy and did the WWll history. During this time of year there are a lot of fires. If this area has been burnt, you can still see bullets lying on the ground from 1942.
After lunch they walk 45 minutes to the Bomber. Can see the remnants of a WWll crash site. The group then has a long descent for a couple of hours before another 1 hour into Naduri Village.
Quick stop for a cuppa and fuel up here before the steepest down and steepest up along the trail. 1 hour both ways before popping out at Launumu Village.
Stopped and rested at the top of the hill being able to see Efogi Village a mere 45 minutes away.
Today was a huge day for the group. At some stage along the trail they had to make up the hours lost due to the late start on day one. Today was the day. Everyone dug deep, they are all great and in high spirits. They are at the halfway point. All of you with the map on the fridge at home turn the page they are heading home.

Kokoda Trail 22-29 August 2023
Day 3 24/8/23

Still dry out there and windy in places. The group are winding their way along the Kokoda Gap. Long climbs onto ridges, long descents back down to Eora Creek. Followed by another long climb up onto another ridge and then back down to Eora Creek. It is never ending, and lots of false peaks. The climbs are some of the toughest and longest along Kokoda.
Bodies are starting to get track fit. Muscle memory is kicking in and beginning to adapt to getting up in the morning and walking for 8+ hours.
Morning tea was at Eora Creek Campsite. This is a beautiful spot beside the river. From here it is a steep climb of 500m to the top of the ridge. Followed by a steep descent of 150m down to Templetons 2. Stopping for lunch and a well-deserved break. After lunch another ascent and descent not as long but that does not mean it is any easier.
Arriving at Templetons 1 which is their campsite for the night.
Its like the turtle and hare out there.
There is quite an age divide in the group we go from 26 years up to 81 years. The youngies are off like the hare, the turtles are slowly following, taking their time, not stopping and magically everyone getting into the designated stops along the way within half an hour of each other.
Mark one of our trekkers from the UK has a passion for Kokoda this is his third walk along the track. Is getting a different experience this time around staying in different campsites and on a completely different itinerary as previous. Hannah is blitzing it as she would having a few ultra’s under her belt. David, Scott & Ed are going well and enjoying the WW11 history. Ernie & Andy, the only word to describe them is inspirational. Age can never weary them.
Everyone is thoroughly enjoying the experience to date.

Kokoda Trail 22-29 August 2023
Day 2 23/8/23

The morning drill is wake up call 5am, pack gear, breakfast, clean teeth and start walking.
Why do we start walking so early?
1. To beat the heat of the day.
2. Hopefully get into the next campsite before dark.
Meandering through the choko fields for the first 3 hours this morning slowly, slowly winding our way up hill.
Is then a steep 2-hour ascent up to Isurava Village. Stopping for a 15-minute break, another 2 hours of easy undulating track arriving at Isurava Memorial for lunch.
Cara held a service here commemorating the soldiers who dug in here during August 1942. Bruce Kingsbury was killed here and won the Victoria cross for his bravery. Only 24 years old. Max our youngest trekker in the group is 26 yrs old.
“At Isurava’s Sacred Ground” (Poem)
The Ode
PNG National Anthem: Sung by all our PNG Crew
Australian National Anthem: Sung by the trekkers
45 minutes further along the track the group visited Surgeons Rock. Emotions are raw as they listened to what occurred here.
“What do your say to a dying man” (Poem)
Osmar Whites “The Man with a Light”
Everyone is not only physically tired but also emotionally spent after visiting these two poignant places along the trail.
But like the soldiers, they regroup and forge on for another couple of hours arriving at Alola Village where they camped last night.
This is a pretty village that sits is on the ridge just before the start of the Kokoda Gap.
It is still hot and dry under foot.
They are all going well, working as a team and looking out for their mates.

Kokoda Trail 22-29 August 2023
Day 1 22/8/23

The group did not start walking until 12noon. This was late due to Air Niugini delays.
At 8am in the morning it is hot walking up to Deneki Campsite at mid-day it is it brutal.
Starting at 372m and walking up to 782m.
The hill up to Deneki Campsite is not under canopy, the sun is beating down on your head and neck. Everyone struggled with the heat even those of us that live in PNG.
It really was a baptism of fire; all coped well considering the conditions.
It was a long day too getting up at 3am, getting into camp around 4pm.
There was time to have a bamboo shower, relax, dinner and bed.
Dave’s camel pack had a blowout. That kept everyone busy with their two cents of advice as to how it should be repaired.
They are on the journey and the adventure has well and truly begun.

Kokoda Trail 21-29 August 2023
A few photo's to get the journey underway.

3am start for the group. A small hiccup with Air Niugini, 1 1/2 hour delay over to Popendetta. They are on their way to Kokoda by truck now. This will take approximately 3 hours.

Once on the track there is no communication nor electricity. We carry a satellite phone which is only used for daily updates and emergencies.

This is a fun group and the laughs have already started. Next post will tomorrow morning. Cara will ring tonight and update us on how the first day on the track went.
