Share this to our university graduates around PNG to work in Australia.
Most in Australia know about, or have used, the visa commonly known as the "backpacker visa" but formally known as the Working Holiday/Work and Holiday visa.
It was introduced to Papua New Guinea in 2023, and PNG is the first country in the Pacific to have access to it. It gives PNG graduates under the age of 31 the opportunity to live and work in Australia with most of the same rights and entitlements as Australian residents. And because it is a new visa, most PNG graduates don't know much about it or how to use it.
The visa is different from other work visas as it is not sponsored - there is no job or employer bringing you to Australia. Instead, you have work rights so that, when you arrive in Australia, you can apply for any job, anywhere, any time as if you were an Australian resident
The catch? you can only work for six months per visa for any one employer. But other than that, you can take a job, quit a job, take another job, and move around the country as much as you like.
The second catch? Employers know about this program and are pretty unlikely to offer you a job until you arrive in Australia. This is because, too often, the worker won't turn up and no-one wants to keep a job open "just in case." So the way to use this visa is to arrive, find somewhere to stay (a friend, a youth hostel, a home stay) and then find a job. They are easy to get if you are not fussy about what you do and the minimum wage in Australia is $23.23 per hour. Most jobs pay better than that.
You don't need a high-skilled job to learn and grow.
