Batu Caves is situated 13 km north of Kuala Lumpur's city center, in the Gombak district.
Main Attractions
1. Temple Cave (Cathedral Cave): The largest cave, housing several Hindu shrines and statues.
2. Dark Cave: A smaller cave with stunning rock formations and ancient fossils.
3. Ramayana Cave: Features dioramas depicting scenes from the Hindu epic, Ramayana.
4. 42-meter Lord Murugan Statue: The world's tallest statue of the Hindu deity.
5. Cave Villa: A complex with paintings, carvings, and sculptures.
History
Batu Caves was discovered in 1891 by American naturalist William Hornaday. The caves were initially used as a place of worship by the indigenous Temuan people. In 1920, Indian immigrant K. Thamboosamy Pillai founded the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, which led to the development of the site into a major Hindu shrine.
