Apologies for the previous misidentification but what we are to feature here as what most refer to as the Vicente Manansala Museum is actually an exhibit under the Museum of Kapampangan Arts.

So yeah! That is the starter. This particular room in the 2nd Floor beside the Pinatubo Museum showcases the largest collection of personal belongings and sketches by National Artist Vicente Manansala of Macabebe.

This particular part of the center was opened in March 22, 2012 in celebration of its 10th anniversary.

The third room, which is the HAU History Room and a more recent addition, was inaugurated on the university's 90th founding anniversary last March 8, 2023. The room has an innovative kiosk in the center featuring HAU's development.

The room is also surrounded by a timeline (similar to the Pinatubo Museum) on the wall showing the significant event each period.

Speaking of Museums, do you want to help one? By simply enjoying a day in Goshen Resort and learning more about WW2, you are also aiding the Bamban WWII Museum / Bamban Historical Society of Mr. Rhonie Dela Cruz. More information on this link:

Wanna experience a museum that showcases Augmented Reality? Download Pinatubo Museum AR on Google Play and visit CKS-HAU Pinatubo Museum.

Pinatubo Museum was inaugurated on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the Pinatubo eruption - June 14, 2016. CKS Director Robby Tantingco said that "the museum is our memorial to the 1991 event that profoundly altered the personal and collective destinies of Kapampangans."

Mt. Pinatubo has been a large part of the Kapampangan life already that it became one of the few volcanoes dedicated with a museum. The museum features a mural timeline detailing the history of the 1991 eruption and by simply aiming your phone at selected photos, you will see Augmented Reality.

The museum also features a mural sculpture Lumud (Drown) by Kapampangan artist Arnel Garcia and other effects relating to the Pinatubo eruption.

This year, a memorial marker was unveiled in Holy Angel University beside the petrified Abacan tree carbon dated to be prehistoric.

The museum and the memorial is a perfect reminder that while we may have suffered, may we always remember that we triumphed.

The Juan D. Nepomuceno Center for Kapampangan Studies of Holy Angel University was inaugurated in March 8 2002, when the university also hosted the First International Conference on Kapampangan Studies six months prior. It is perhaps today's benchmark in regional study center in the Philippines.

The Kapampangan Museum has 3 floors and even the outside is an exhibit already. The trees in front are some that became the names of some Pampanga towns and city. and Before entering the center, you will notice the year of foundation 1933, a Latin inscriptions Laus Deo Semper, the university's motto which says Praise Always to God, and 1953

Once you open the door, you will definitely be drawn by the retablo in the center. It is already a showcase of Kapampangan folk arts as this took the collaboration of the santeros of Macabebe, woodcarvers of Betis and the pukpuk makers of Apalit and Mexico. It contains the patron saint of all 22 towns and cities including the patroness of the province in the center.

Beside the stair is a woodcarving depicting all kinds of procession in Pampanga as one continuous flow . This piece is called Limbun and was made by Boyet Flores of Betis. On the left is the John A. Larkin Library. Larkin is the author of "The Pampangans" and remains the gold standard for works on Kapampangan history and society. His research materials are turned over by her widow to the CKS.

Also in this level is the floor for special exhibits. Starting October 18 at 9:00am, that space will exhibit Feast of Clay, Kuran: An exhibit of old Pottery and Objects of Clay.

The second floor is home to the Archival Collection hosting original papers, documents, manuscripts, rare books, photographs, written records and other ephemera that reveal the richness of Pampanga's Culture and History.

The topmost floor is dedicated to the Filipiniana Collection of Prof. Ambeth Ocampo which was transferred to the CKS from the National Library in 2018. Filipiniana refers to Philippine Studies. This library is home to more than 6,000 volumes on Philippine Studies.

Thinking about it, you need not go far if you would like to have a breathe of Philippine and Kapampangan studies. CKS is so rich that we need to put this feature in parts. 2 more to be exact.

June 1899 - The site of the first anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence
August 1899 - Headquarters of Gen. McArthur

1981 - Bought by the BSP
17 June 2010 - Turned over to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines
24 August 2015 - Converted to Museum of Philippine Social History

A tarpaulin outside the property proudly states that the current museum, first in the country, provides a glimpse of Filipino social history in the past and today. It has 9 galleries, an e-learning room and an Audio Visual Room for different activities. The museum offers an exciting panorama of Filipino life and culture, before and today, that uniquely describes the Filipino.

The museum showcases the Filipino social life with some galleries dedicated to traditional kitchen utensils, Filipino games, architecture, clothing and textile, music, art and trade and glimpse to the past and present. Definitely aesthetic with learning.

Pagbati sa ika-74 na kaarawan ni Manlilikha ng Bayan Eduardo Mutuc.

Eduardo Mutuc
Metalsmith
Kapampangan
Apalit, Pampanga

Eduardo Mutuc is an artist who has dedicated his life to creating religious and secular art in silver, bronze, and wood. His intricately detailed retablos, mirrors, altars, and carosas are in churches and private collections. A number of these works are quite large, some exceeding forty feet, while some are very small and feature very fine and delicate craftsmanship.

According to him, craftsmanship begins with respect for oneโ€™s tools and the medium. The first things he teaches his students is how to hold the chisel and hammer properly to promote ease of use and prevent fatigue and mistakes because of improper handling. He also cautions against working with an eye towards easy money. The only way to improve oneโ€™s skills, he says, is to immerse oneself, learn the technique, and to practice. Only in perfecting oneโ€™s craft can there be real reward.

Did you know that by participating in Tigtigan Terakan keng Dalan, you are in way helping Museo ning Angeles? Yes. The 2-day festivities along the stretch of Balibago is one of the Foundation's sources of subsidy.

The Museum is located in front of the Holy Rosary Parish Church and was the old "municipio" that was built in 1922, as such until 1998, repaired and reused as a museum in 1999, and declared an important cultural property (ICP) by the NHCP in 2012.

The first thing you need to look at is the statue of Jose Abad Santos fronting the museum. Inside, you will be welcomed by the big name of the museum - Museo ning Angeles (Museum of History & Culinary Arts). This is beside the grand staircase leading to the 2nd floor. A door leading to the galleries is actually on the left with the tag Kasalesayan (history).

On the exhibits are the histories of the City and the former Clark Airbase. There is also one dedicated to the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, artifacts from the Philippine-American War and artworks of local craftsmen.

On the second floor is the Culinarium, the first culinary museum in the country and a perfect view to the Church in front adorned with banderitas.

Starting October 14 and until October 31, the Vicente Alvarez Dizon Gallery will be home to Pamangantabe: a visual art exhibition which promises a delectable feast for the eyes.

Angeles City is definitely proof that the old does not always need to give way for the new. It presents an ideal mix of the "was" and the "what will be". After all, it is learning from the past that we profit by the present, and from the present, to live better in the future. - William Wordsworth

How I wish Taylor Swift was in love with a WW2 Historian

Let us start this with a sad observation first, "Buti na lang avid followers kami ni Sir Robby Tantingco."

Wait. It is never the fandom that we are sad about, but by the harsh truth that if not for his post about Luis Taruc, we may have never known the fact that the first Luis Taruc and his WW2 resistance Movement Monument is to be unveiled this coming Saturday (October 14, 2023; 9am) at Garden of Peace Memorial Park, San Luis, Pampanga.

We could not believe how absurd it is that for a significant event like this, a quick search on facebook about "Luis Taruc Monument" will only produce around 3 posts. The first is the post of Sir Robby, 2nd is a simple invitation from GOP Memorial Park page, and another one showing the installation of the base platform by Engr. Clarin. This makes us actually the 4th.

Oh! Wait. There was the Philippine Daily Inquirer Column of Tonette Orejas in July detailing the history of Taruc, the Huks, and this monument. Below is the link to the article:

https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1808975/betis-artist-starts-huk-monument-in-pampanga?fbclid=IwAR0jKw1Z2wxnyqfeod4p2eq5TB0CZPeosdOO02RuNEy_TaCFj6Nl4kHLbRg

So that makes us the 5th post about this event. I wonder why? Isn't Luis Taruc a hero for 6 years already? (I hope you can hear the sarcasm and the rhetoric on this one). Anyways, here is the post of Sir Robby to provide you a push on why a share is with merit:

https://www.facebook.com/robby.tantingco/posts/pfbid02kVSbGaFVSKqprhi6XtQQzuyqjQJFbkfxhRvQWVbGr6aNNCNhRiqNkFQPUqAztwJ3l

Create a post from these and be the 6th brave soul.

But as I was able to read more about the man, whose honor is to be immortalized with a monument this Saturday, I don't think that any of these actually matter.

The man got principles and even without your approval, those will be unbothered.

To us, sincerest thanks is still in order for businessman Abel Manliclic who commissioned the monument which is sculpted by Totek Layug. For without them, any of these posts will not even exist. This monument is more than a recognition - that there was once a Luis Taruc, a nationalist and defender of the rights of farmers and workers, but also a way for us to think, to remember.

And most importantly as the plaque partly reads, ..."igniting a flame of patriotism in every heart and mind that beholds this monument."

---
Upon knowing this event, we could not wait but check on the ongoing, onsite preparation. Photo was blurred for you to appreciate the actual on Saturday. A copy of the program was commented by Mr. Allan C. Manliclic on Sir Robby's post.

Santiago Matamoros is directly translated from spanish meaning Saint James the Moor-slayer (mata - death, moros - muslims). It became an interesting story for me when I had a chance to tour Dra. Anna's Spanish relatives from Spain last October 6.

The moment I met Sir Mariano and his wife Madam Graciele, one of our icebreakers is of course Spaniard ancestry. It was early in the tour when I learned that Sir Mariano came from the Santiagos of Bulacan who traces their lineage to the once Datus in the town.

I was already fascinated with the name Santiago even before this tour due to the complexity of its translation - its equivalent in English is James. Later on I would learn that it was derived from Hebrew name Ya'akov (meaning Jacob) that would then be Sant Iago, Sant Yago, thus Santiago to refer to St. James. I used this little trivia as my leverage since I know that later in the tour, we are to visit St. James the Apostle Parish Church in the afternoon or known in Pampanga as the Betis Church.

Even before lunch, we already came across with the story of Santiago Matamoros in passing. The story goes that during the battle of Clavijo in 844AD, the Christian side of King Ramiro I is on the losing side until St. James miraculously appeared, riding a white horse, and helped their side. During the time of the story, St. James is long before dead in 44AD.

We did not dwell on the authenticity of the story but rather on the fact that the usual statue and painting would depict St. James on a white horse tramping on the Moros - muslim. We acknowledge that the name Matamoros is already politically incorrect (barely used) and there is fear of hurting the feelings within Islam. It is with this same reason why this particular representation is almost removed from Santiago Matamoros emblematic churches like the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.

As a country promoting peace with our Muslim brothers, this is easily relatable.

Then the funny part came when we visited the Betis Church. Because, there, in its full glory, beside the oldest recorded artesian well, stands a Santiago Matamoros statue. St. James. On a white horse. With people beneath him.

This actually stunned me so I just played along by the fact that it is there. If during that exact time, I would be pressed why do we still have the statue, I would most likely say: "What one does not know will not hurt him, because to be honest, most of us would not know the significance of that statue. Even the idea that those are depictions of Muslims, we did not know.".

Looking back now, I think that Betis Church decision to have the statue is the same with that of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral's: one should not seek to demolish any historic masterpieces just because of an unfortunate event.

So that is Santiago Matamoros for me. It will no longer be just a statue in the middle of the Church ground but could be a trove of information.

This is definitely a special story for me whenever I visit the Betis Church from now on. That is the fun part of touring. We learn from each other.

๐Ÿ“San Fernando Giant Lantern Center
โฐ8am-6pm Monday-Sunday
๐ŸŽŸ FREE

Guide Tip: As of today, avoid Google Map's direction of entering through KIA Pampanga - Calulut - Paskuhan Rd as there are on going road works. The safest way is to use the U-turn in San Fernando Entry (to NLEX) almost in front of Robinson's Starmills. Take the U-turn and on the immediate intersection, slide right to the Giant Lantern Center.

---

The center opened last May 27, 2022 in what was previously the parking lot of the Paskuhan Village and former venue of the Giant Lantern Festival in the '90s.

Today, the Giant Lantern and Tourist Information Center serves as both the City Tourism Office and a gallery showcasing the rich Giant Lantern-making tradition of Fernandinos. Here you can see and experience how a manual rotor lights/sparkles a giant lantern. You can also see a replica of what Ms. Universe Catriona Gray used to carry during the national costume event, the history and people of the giant lantern-making industry and the history of the city.

It also has an amphitheater in front patterned after the trademark designs of SM Prime Holdings Corporation, owner of Premier Central, Incorporated (PCI) - the company that donated the property to the city.

Check out the center that offers onsite-guided tours and tourist assistance from Monday to Sunday.

GTIG Travel Services is honored to be co-advocates with City of San Fernando, Pampanga Tourism Office in promoting City of San Fernando through packaged and guided tour. The tour includes the center and you can have more information in this link:

Complete Guideline to the Travel Hack in Lakeshore Pampanga's Holiday Park.

The Holiday Park is located inside Lakeshore Pampanga. It is actually some 2.4km from Mexico Exit in NLEX.

From the south (City of San Fernando), there is actually a temporary access (more to the temporariness later) open in Petron Lakeshore. If you are like us, what we did was park in Petron Lakeshore, walk to that access as it happened to be where the new entrance is, and enjoy the food!

This is sort of important as last year, the entrance was on the other side. If you would use that memory and park there somewhere, you will be asked to walk the 500 meters to the new entrance.

The new entrance is welcomed by the Flavor Cartel on the left and the Carnival games and rides on the right.

See! You do not have to mind the parking if you will simply park in Petron Lakeshore.

We ate in Flavor Cartel, walked around a little bit and decided to go home. The exit is not as strict as the entrance so we simply went out near the new entrance and back to our car in Petron Lakeshore.

The guard told us that the gate closes at 12:00mn. We did not intend to stay that long and was able to come out on the same access.

Aside from twice the 2.4km our car saved, it also bought us plenty of time considering Mexico Exit may get heavy traffic during rush hours. Well, we encountered it when going home, but at least, it is already after all the fun.

Please use this hack lightly. There is a sign that says temporary access as we feel that Petron Lakeshore could close this if they feel it will become a problem to them (e.g. no more parking to other vehicles using Lakeshore). But hoping that Lakeshore prioritizes customer comfort, you can also be diligent by checking first if the access is open. A little detour could save you more.

Coming from the south, we made sure first that the access is open and will be open during the time we are about to go back. If going there it is closed, you may simply consider this as a bump and go the initial supposed route.

Those coming from the north can consider exiting in the City of San Fernando to Park in Petron if they feel that the benefit will outweigh the cost.

There is no clear guideline on how long a car could stay inside NLEX, if you feel that you will take longer than usual, you may want to bring your car with you inside Lakeshore to be sure, but if you feel otherwise, you may consider the Petron Lakeshore route.

Anyways, the usual stay is like simply eating in one of the gasoline stations in Nlex.

We hope this helps you have a stress free travel to Pampanga! Enjoy Pampanga! โค Please like and subscribe to our page for more Pampanga Travel Tips.
