For the first time in 31 years, the athletics event for this year's Cebu City Olympics will be done outside of Cebu City, with the Cebu City Sports Center’s oval still under repair in preparation for the Palarong Pambansa 2024. —

CCO will run until Feb. 11, with athletics scheduled to take place on Feb. 9 to 11 at the Naga City Sports Complex.

To support the athletes, Nimfa Bongo, DepEd division school superintendent, said the Cebu City Government had hired coaches for the different sports, adding that right after the City Olympics these coaches will train the qualified athletes for the Palarong Pambansa.

This year’s City Olympics include the following sports events: Archery, Arnis, Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Badminton, Billiard, Boxing, Chess, Dancesports, Cultural, Gymnastics, Football, Futsal, Karatedo, Scrabble, Sepak Takraw, Softball, Swimming, Taekwondo, Tennis, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Wrestling, Wushu, Mr. & Ms. CCO, Pencak Silat, and Para Games.

The different venues for the games include Filinvest, South Road Properties, CCSC, Naga City Sports Complex, Labangon E.S. Ground, B Sports Institute, Cebu Coliseum, Cebu Eastern College Gym, Cebu City Sports Center, Cebu City Sports Institute, SM City Seaside Cebu, Labangon Elementary School (E.S.) Gym, University of San Jose-Recoletos Basak Covered Court, Robinsons Galleria, Oppra Elementary School Gym, Labangon E.S. Grounds, City Green, Bo. Luz E.S. and Lahug E.S., University of Southern Philippines-Foundation Gym and Covered Court, New Cebu Coliseum, and Zapatera E.S. Gym.

The City Olympics serves as Cebu City’s division meet, where athletes compete to secure a spot on the city’s team for the regional meet. Participation in the lower meets is a prerequisite for athletes aiming to compete in the Palarong Pambansa.

Cebu City is renovating the CCSC for the city’s hosting of the Palarong Pambansa in July.

After 30 years, the Palarong Pambansa, the biggest multi-sporting event for student-athletes in the country, returns to Cebu City.

Currently, renovation works continue at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC), which will be hosting several multi-sporting events next year, including the prestigious Palarong Pambansa 2024.

According to CCSC Executive Director Jovito Taburada, they will request the contractor to fast track the oval’s renovation so it would be finished by February 2024.

The City Olympics is expected to be held January while the CVIRAA is expected to be held in April, according to Francis Ramirez of the Cebu City Local Schools Board.

The Palarong Pambansa 2024 will be held in July.

Cebu City first hosted the Palarong Pambansa event in 1954 and last hosted it in 1994.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama promised that Cebu City will "deliver a Palarong Pambansa that will be remembered."

With the rampant spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus, we urge you to keep safe with these following tips, whether you are traveling right now or just staying with a number of people:

1. Stay clean. Wash your hands with soap, sterilize and avoid touching your eyes or face. Whenever you come in contact with any foreign object, be it a metal surface or objects that are frequently come in contact with other people, sanitize the affected parts as soon as possible to prevent the spread of the virus.

2. Stay healthy. No matter how novel or new the virus is, one thing is for sure. It is still a virus, albeit a mutated one. And even if one may be infected with the virus, a healthy individual with a good health resistance will be able to defeat it. It includes eating more nutrients from different kinds of food groups, getting enough sleep, and a routine that keeps this cycle of healthy living going.

3. Minimize possible contamination where virus is highly probable. In public areas like malls or the streets, minimize your exposure to the possibility from anyone you aren't sure is sterile. Try to cover areas where entry to your body is higher. That being your nose and eyes and any possible scars aka the areas most exposed to foreign substances.

Stay safe everyone! 🙏

ADVISORY: Metro Cebu is currently experiencing hazy weather condition caused by the forest fire in Indonesia and enhanced by Hanging Habagat.

Haze caused by forest fires can cause air pollution, which can bring about health risks for respiratory tract infections and cardiac ailments.

As of 8 a.m. today, realtime monitoring data for PM 2.5 showed a reading of 56 micrograms per normal cubic meter which is above the safe guideline value of 50 micrograms per normal cubic meter.

PM 2.5 is a particulate matter or a dust particle measuring 2.5 micrometers in diameter (about 3% the diameter of a human hair).

Since they are so small and light, PM 2.5 tend to stay longer in the air than heavier particles. This increases the chances of humans and animals inhaling them into the bodies and might bypass the nose and throat and pe*****te deep into the lungs. Some may even enter the circulatory system.

With this, we encourage the public to take safety measures and wear personal protective equipments (PPEs) such as dust mask or eye goggles to protect yourself from air pollutants.

If you have nothing to do outside, stay indoors and always keep your windows and doors closed. Do not jog nor run outside as the body ingests more pollutants when active. | Courtesy of EMB-7 via Mitchelle Palaubsanon
