Council okays extension of Baguio Blooms up to April 15

18 February 2020 – The city legislative body unanimously approved the request of the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, Inc. (BFFFI) for the extension of the ongoing Baguio Blooms Exposition and Exhibition at the Baguio Convention Center grounds originally until March 8, 2020 to April 15, 2020 to allow the exhibitors to recover some of their investments in the conduct of one of the major highlights of the 25th edition of the Panagbenga.

The decision was reached by the members of the City Council after organizers and participating landscapers and exhibitors appeared dung the council’s regular session last Monday.

Earlier, Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong approved the request of BFFFI Chief of Staff Evangeline Payno and Baguio Bloom Exposition and Exhibition committee chairman Frederico Alquiros for the extension of the ongoing Panagbenga-related event at the Baguio Convention Center grounds originally scheduled until March 8, 2020 to April 15, 2020 following the postponement of the major flower festival highlights due to the Corona virus Disease (COVID) 2019 scare.

From the 62 landscapers and exhibitors that originally participated in the initial offering of the Baguio Blooms Exposition and Exhibition last February 1, 2020, Payno disclosed that the number dropped to 49 following the reported uncertainty on the schedule of the major flower festival highlights and the decision on the request for extension that could have helped convince them to stay with the hope that the situation will drastically improve in the coming weeks.

The BFFFI official informed city legislators that with the approved extension of the Baguio Blooms, there is a possibility that the remaining exhibitors and landscapers will remain aside and the organizers may be able to convince some of those that backed out to come back for them to be able to recover their investments considering the added promotional activities of the city government in the Baguio Convention Center to help promote the exhibit area.

City Administrator Bonifacio dela Peña claimed that the presence of the exhibit area within a portion of the Baguio Convention Center grounds is a come-on to those holding their conventions, meetings and gatherings inside the city-owned facility and those attending the same will patronize the products sold in the different booths put up by the exhibitors and landscapers.

Organizers assured city officials there will be no additional charges collected from the exhibitors during the extension that was granted except for the additional charges on the utilities that could either be absorbed by the foundation or collected from the tenants depending on the appliances being used in their stalls.

Previously, BFFFI released some 300 application forms to interested exhibitors for the Baguio Blooms Exposition and Exhibition but only 80 interested exhibitors responded and participated in the initial staging of the Baguio Blooms.

However, 18 exhibitors withdrew their participation because of the very low foot traffic which will not allow them to be able to recover their investments and the rentals apart from the assessments done on them by the city government for the special permits granted them to join the said event. A CALL TO ARMS, CLASPED IN UNITY --- In 2019, the best was yet to be. Come 2020, the best will be upon us, confidently within our solid grasp as one unified community.

There may have been small beginnings from which small victories were worthily earned by hard, honest and relentless work as we strived to govern and lead our city. With competence, and strong leadership, we are now prepared to execute strategic solutions and programs to make things happen in 2020 and succeeding years.

To make Baguio better, there will be no let up in pushing for change in the way we do our assigned tasks. We should persevere and aim to level up our efforts, to be better than our levelled best, to be better than the rest. There is no turning back, no letting go, just a focused mindset that it can be done. Let us think big, aspire for something big to be able to achieve something big.

Let us welcome 2020 with greater faith in each other, our hopes firmer and intact, our bond as brothers stronger than ever. By our deeply settled resolve, Baguio will be ready to embrace Year 2020 amidst the challenges it may bring.

God bless everyone in a year of emerging abundance of peace, prosperity and pride!

Mayor Pounces on Litterbugs

BAGUIO CITY - Mayor Benjie Magalong had observed the lack of discipline and mindfulness in the disposal of trash in the city in the past days prompting him to order Baguio City Police Director PCol Allen Co to launch an aggressive anti-littering drive effective tomorrow, 28 December 2019.

He asked the police to arrest those who indiscriminately throw their refuse.

He also urged restaurants and business establishments in the city to observe the proper time to bring out their trash. Violators will be dealt with accordingly.

"Our City is overwhelmed with trash this Holiday season hence I am asking for your cooperation," the mayor said.

The mayor is also mulling to propose to the city council the passage of Ordinances that would impose congestion and environmental fees to tourists. -Aileen Refuerzo

Retirement : are you ready for it?

1. one day you will retire. You won't be going to work. You won’t have office power any more. No influence or at best, a reduced influence. Your cash flow will also reduce.! Check retirement date on your payslip.

2. Always go for your 30days annual leave. Whatever you do during your leave, is what you will be doing when you retire. If all you do is to sleep or watch TV, then that’s what you are likely do do in your retirement. Remember the book of Proverbs. A little sleep and a little slumber, so shall your poverty multiply.
Watching Big Brother Naija will not save you heartache in retirement. Learn a trade or a skill during your leave. It will come handy. Spend your after-office hours learning something. Don’t spend it sleeping, Gossiping, watching TV!! Same goes for your weekend. Make them productive. You will thank yourself for spending your time productively.

3. Invest for your retirement... your children are not retirement investment. Don’t bank on your children’s support or the support of friends or relations. That’s a BIG risk. It may not happen. Be ready to take care of yourself!! Everyone has his own responsibilities. They won’t be able to help you that much. You will also lose your dignity and respect if you adopt a life of begging.

4. Start a hobby early in your working days to take you along when you retire. Rearing chicken, farming or own a shop. Acquire marketable skills ( not useless paper certificates) Etc

5. Where shall you retire. Build yourself a home. Don't retire and start to rent a house or refuse to vacate government house. You will be at the mercy of your landlord at a time when your cash flow is not only reduced but unpredictable!!

6. Who shall be your dependants. By the time you retire, your children should be above 18, and self reliant.

7. Don't retire and stay in a big city unless you can TRULY afford it. You can't continue living in a big city after 60 with limited financial resources. The language and the hustle will be hard for you. Where possible, Relocate to a less expensive town where your reduced take home (pension) can go further.

8. Have property which can be rented or converted into cash. Have shares that pay good dividends. Plant cash trees. Rear goats, cultivate vegetables etc. these activities will not only give you income but will also keep you healthy.

9. Live a simple life. If you never built a house at your rural home, dont use your retirement package to build. It is unwise unless you plan to live there on a permanent basis or you are super rich and therefore can afford the luxury. The choice is yours.

Note that many of retirees die early because of the following:

1. They are Not mentally prepared to retire.
2. Lack of finances
3. They Lapse into Depression
4 They develop Hypertension/ Diabetes because of worries, anxiety and uncertainty "and financial pressures.

YOUR DESK AT YOUR WORK PLACE IS NOT PERMANENT. PLAN FOR YOUR RETIREMENT.
