This year’s theme, “𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞: 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐭”, is a call to action. It encourages collective efforts to finance wildlife conservation effectively and sustainably, aiming to build a resilient future for both people and the planet. With a growing number of species threatened with extinction or becoming endangered, there is a pressing need to increase our efforts in saving wildlife.

As we mark , the National Museum of the Philippines highlights the giant clam collections of the Philippine Zoological Reference Collections (PZRC).

Beneath the turquoise waters of the Philippines, one can find the fascinating guardians of our coral reefs: the giant clams, locally known as 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐨. These gentle giants are not just remarkable ocean inhabitants but also crucial in marine ecosystems. They act as natural reef engineers, contribute to carbonate production, provide shelter for various marine species, filter large volumes of water, and produce essential nutrients through their symbiotic relationship with algae.

Did you know that eight of the 12 known species of giant clams worldwide are found in the Philippines? The largest species is the Tridacna gigas, which can measure about 120 cm in length and weigh over 200 kilograms. Unfortunately, illegal harvesting, habitat destruction, and climate change pose a threat to these magnificent clams. Tridacna gigas is classified as "critically endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Additionally, all giant clam species are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and are included in the IUCN Red List.

This World Wildlife Day 2025, let us advocate for protecting these marine giants. Through marine conservation efforts, community education, and sustainable practices, we can ensure that future generations will continue to marvel at the beauty of our oceans.
