Very excited to invite you to the Bataan leg of the Bungad spoken word tour by Leandro & Mai!

Mai Cantillano, born and raised in our beloved province, continues to represent the essence of Bataan through her art and actions. Alongside her is Leandro Reyes, a descendant of the legendary Lola Basyang, who is now a storyteller in his own right.

Eight years ago, also in August, they performed their very first show together right here in Balanga, and since then, they’ve been collaborating and performing across the country.

The Bungad Tour, named after the zine and the poem they first performed together in Bataan, marks a significant milestone in their creative tandem. This event in Bataan is the fourth stop on their nationwide tour, which aims to connect with spoken word communities and amplify new voices through the medium of poetry.

To bring Bungad back to where it all began is a moment Maimai and Leandro can’t wait to share with you. This independently produced event is part of their mission to bridge communities through spoken word poetry.

The Bataan leg will be at Remedios Cafe, Balanga, on August 24, at 6PM.

A Hopeful Dawn for Bataan's Future

As her reign comes to an end, we chose a location that will symbolize a new beginning. When you visit the province of Bataan, one of the first majestic landscapes you'll see is Mt. Malasimbo, located in the First District. This iconic mountain serves as a reminder that no matter where we go, Bataan will always be a place we can call home.

Malen describes her journey as transformational: "Every time someone asks me that, I always tell them that I'm really, really grateful. The opportunity to showcase myself and help others by being part of the community and organizations that support those in need is invaluable. I was only 17 when I won, and I never imagined growing this much with a title."

But Malen knows that true empowerment goes beyond the crown. "Even without a title, we can all be queens by empowering others through our words and actions, helping each other become better people." Her unwavering spirit and vision for a more inclusive, supportive Bataan shine through, inspiring us to continue this legacy of compassion and community.

As the sun rises on a new chapter for Binibining Bataan, Malen's radiance and hopefulness for the province's future fills us with the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

Behold Binibining Bataan

Due to the disruption caused by the super typhoon, the shoot in District 2 did not go as planned. However, Malen, our Miss Bataan 2018, displayed her never-ending grace and perseverance to complete her final photo shoot, as she shone through the dark clouds, undisturbed by the challenging weather conditions.

As the new pageant unveils, Malen's admiration for the modern Bataeña is evident: "I would describe the modern Bataeña as stronger and smarter. Before, we adhered to the societal standards of beauty—we needed to be sexy, to diet, to fit in. But in today's generation, we believe that we are all beautiful in our own unique ways."

This pageant aims to empower the women of Bataan, boost the local tourism industry, and to showcase the province's commitment to environmental preservation.

Malen's hopeful vision extends beyond the pageant, as she believes that as individuals, we all have the power to make a difference in our community.

On August 8, 2024, as part of the final phase of the 7-day Bataan Cultural Community Guiding Seminar, local guide aspirants underwent a familiarization tour of selected locations around the City of Balanga. These included the Bataan Tourism Center, Plaza Mayor de Ciudad de Balanga, Cathedral-Shrine Parish of Saint Joseph, The Bunker, and the Bataan World War II Museum. The actual mock tour, conducted both on foot and on board, took place on August 9, 2024, as part of their practicum.

The validation and critiquing of the mock tours were facilitated by Mr. Romano “Manu” Del Rosario from the Department of Tourism (DOT) - Region III, along with Ms. Juliet Allegra Blanas, MBA, and Ms. Leslie Jorge-Acain, DBA, representatives from the Bataan Peninsula Tour Guides.

The trainees applied all the knowledge they had gained over the past 7 days during the actual tour guiding practice. After the mock tour, they completed their final written exam, which was followed by the awarding of training certificates and the closing program.

On the fifth day of the 7-day Bataan Cultural Community Guiding Seminar, Mr. Romano “Manu” D. Del Rosario delved into the intricate aspects of Cultural Community Guiding on August 7, 2024, as part of the 3-day lecture series on the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE).

The participants were progressively prepared to present themselves by being assigned to lead the preliminaries of the program in teams. They were also given specific locations where they could test their storytelling skills and become familiar with their designated destinations.

This activity is crucial in preparing for the upcoming Mock Tour Guiding Practicum, scheduled for August 8-9, 2024.

Before Super Typhoon Carina made landfall, Miss Bataan 2018, Malen, graced her final photo shoot as her reign came to an end.

As we journeyed through the three districts of Bataan, we witnessed the province's beauty under a bright, sunny sky, which gradually transitioned to a moody, subdued ambiance as dark clouds rolled in. Despite the shifting weather, Malen remained steadfast, embodying courage and an unyielding fighting spirit.

During the shoot in the Third District, we asked Malen if she was comfortable playing in the rain. The resulting photo captures the essence of the modern Bataeña, as she describes it: “stronger and smarter.”

Dancing in the heavy rain symbolizes the resilient and free-spirited nature of the western part of the West Philippine Sea.

The 7-day Bataan Cultural Community Guiding Seminar continued its fourth day on August 6, 2024, with a session led by Mr. Romano D. Del Rosario from the Department of Tourism. The day's focus was on Cultural Community Guiding.

During the session, aspiring local guides received valuable tips and techniques on how to practice cultural sensitivity and deliver compelling interpretations of stories. The training emphasized anticipating the needs of tourists while simultaneously demonstrating strong management skills to surpass guest expectations.

The module was delivered through engaging activities designed to test the participants' knowledge and creativity in handling unexpected situations in the field.

The primary objective of this session was to raise awareness among the trainees about their significant role in the tourism industry. The session highlighted the positive multiplier effect they can have, not just on local tourism stakeholders in Bataan, but also across the country.

𝗞𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝘂𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝘆𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀

From the 1970s to the 1990s, the modest Joyous Fishpond Resort in Doña Francisca Subdivision, City of Balanga, was a popular destination for locals seeking relaxation. Just a 10-minute ride from Balanga Town Plaza, the resort evolved from a small farm with a fishpond and private pool into a must-visit spot for family picnics, social gatherings, and events.

Opened to the public in 1974, Joyous quickly became known as the "Greenhills of Bataan" and hosted numerous events, including concerts featuring Rico J. Puno, Pilita Corales, Apo Hiking Society, and others. The resort was synonymous with the "Party Place" of its time, attracting "Bagets" and "Yuppies" to its lively discos and live band performances.

Joyous was also famous for its delectable dishes like Crispy Pata, Sizzling Bulalo Steak, Nilasing na Hipon, Adobong Alimango, and Sugpo sa Aligue. Over the years, it transformed from a pool bar to a full-fledged events place.

After 37 years, Joyous Fishpond Resort closed on December 31, 2011, as the management shifted focus to other businesses. However, its legacy lives on at Tangway by Joyous, a casual dining restaurant on Capitol Drive, City of Balanga, where patrons can still enjoy Joyous Classics alongside new dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients. These family heirloom recipes continue to be a cherished part of the VL Heritage.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆

Rafflesia is a genus of parasitic flowering plants that can be seen at Bataan Natural Park and on the mountain slopes of Natib. The flower may be over 100 centimeters (39 inches) in diameter and weigh up to 10 kilograms (22 pounds). Even the smallest species, such as Rafflesia baletei, has flowers with a diameter of around 12 centimeters. The flowers look and smell like rotting flesh, hence their local names, which translate to “corpse flower” or “meat flower.” On the slopes of Natib, it is rarely seen for five to ten years.

Mabuhay! ☀️🇵🇭

On the third day of the 7-day Bataan Cultural Community Guiding Seminar, held on August 5, 2024, trainees were introduced to the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence (FBSE) - a flagship training program by the Department of Tourism (DOT). This program aims to instill a sense of pride and passion in delivering exceptional Filipino frontline services.

The activity was facilitated by Mr. Romano “Manu” D. Del Rosario and assisted by Ms. Krissa Layn Roquillo, both representatives from DOT - Region III.

The module covered various topics, including the 7M’s “Maka-Diyos, Makatao, Maka-kalikasan, Makabansa, Masayahin, May Bayanihan, and May Pag-asa” of Filipino Core Values, delivering excellent service using the GUEST “Greet, Understand, Educate, Satisfy, and Thank” Technique, tourism touchpoints, and many more.

The objective of this learning session is to equip local guide aspirants with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide superb customer service, creating a lasting impression on tourists through world-class Filipino hospitality.

The 7-day Bataan Cultural Community Guiding Seminar continued on its second day, August 4, 2024, as the topic dives into the vibrant stories of Bataan history and culture, and its origin.

Participants engaged in interesting discussions with resource speakers Ms. Gemma Ruth G. Castro of the Bataan Historical Council, Ms. Sarahlly M. Baluyot, and Ms. Sandi Alyza L. Saludares of Salian Elementary School, Abucay, Bataan.

This part of the learning session is essential for immersing local guide aspirants in the fascinating narrative of our province's past and its remarkable role in the Second World War.

The Provincial Tourism Office, in partnership with the Department of Tourism Region III, launched the first day of the 7-day Bataan Cultural Community Guiding Seminar on August 3, 2024, at the Audio Visual Room of the Bataan Tourism Center.

The highlighted topics covered the overview of Basic Life Support Training, including an Introduction to Life Support, Hands-Only CPR, Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) Management, and Bandaging.

The purpose of this module is to prepare these aspirants to be resilient and quick on their feet in urgent situations. Comprehensive discussions and actual demonstrations were conducted to provide participants with first-hand experience.

The resource speakers, courtesy of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), were Mr. Ace Sanggalang RN, MAN, Mr. Don Mark Capalos, Mr. John Louie Andohuyan, and Mr. Paul Bryan Libot. They were introduced and assisted by Ms. MJ Tupas.

Twenty-four enthusiastic local guide aspirants from various municipalities and professions joined this learning session. This annual local guides training is facilitated to generate a pool of local tour guides as part of the efforts to promote our province and educate locals about Bataan. These aspirants are anticipated to soon join the Bataan Peninsula Tour Guides.

The Bataan Cultural Community Guiding Seminar continues until August 9, 2024.

Ang kahilingang magtatag ng paaralang pang-agrikultural noong araw ay naisakatuparan sa pamamahala ng dating gobernador na si Emilio Ma Naval. Noong Nobyembre 6, 1954, naitayo sa kabundukan ng bayan ng Abucay ang Bataan National Agricultural School na ngayon ay ang Bataan Peninsula State University - Abucay Campus.

Ito ay naitayo para sa mga kabataang may hilig at talento sa pagsasaka. Bukod sa murang matrikula, ang mga mag-aaral ay may libreng pabahay. Sila rin ay nakakapagtanim ng mga gulay na sapat para sa kanilang pagkain habang sila ay nag-aaral at naninirahan sa paaralan.

Sa pagpapatuloy ng Bahay-Wika at Master Apprentice Language Learning Program ginanap ang Capacity Building Workshop noong Hulyo 30, 2024 sa Bahay-Wika, Bangkal, Abucay. Pinangunahan ito ng Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino na sina Bb. Jing Zorilla-Hinampas at Bb. Jeslie Del Ayre Luza.

Ang Capacity Building Workshop ay naglalayong maiplano ang mga hakbang ng komunidad kung paano mas palalakasin ang wikang Magbukun sa Bangkal, Abucay. Ang workshop ay nilahukan ng iba't ibang miyembro ng komunidad kabilang ang Tribal Chieftain na si Gng. Rosita Sison, IPMR na si Hon. Jhay-R Reyes, DepEd Bataan na si Bb. Bernadette Bantigue, mga Masters, mga G**o at ilan sa mga magulang sa Bahay-Wika.

Bukod pa rito, nagkaroon din ng oryentasyon para sa mga magulang para sa darating na pasukan na ginanap noong Hulyo 31, 2024.
