Happy Monday! We hope you've had a peaceful weekend. With World Tourism Day in mind, coming up on Wednesday, 27 September, we start the work week with this quote from World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili.

Certainly food for thought as we prepare for ! How will you be marking this global event? Note the theme this year: Tourism and green investment.

"The theme highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN roadmap for a better world by 2030."

Have you seen those Vigan stoneware jars with “ears” and cord patterns?

At least until the end of the 20th century, local women artisans usually undertook the task to produce such decorative elements on these semi-porous to non-porous jars.

Generically called “burnay” in the Iloko language, this type of high-temperature, kiln-fired pottery is made of clay and fine sand sourced from the western periphery of the World Heritage City of Vigan. Vigan burnay technology was introduced by artisans who came from the kiln sites in the southeastern part of mainland China around the late 18th to mid-19th century, when Chinese families began to settle in Vigan. Locals have been employed as pottery hands since.

Burnay jars are first molded traditionally by men using the potter’s wheel, with the bigger pieces formed by joining the upper and lower parts through the paddle-and-anvil technique. Afterwards, women would work on moistened clay-and-sand lumps for the decorations. The lumps are rolled as in an elongated dough, and from this, small cuts are made – to be embossed beautifully into the jar’s shoulder to make the ears. The long, moistened clay-sand pieces are on the other hand carefully embossed into the shoulder considering balance to form these like hanging cords, and then pressed using the thumb to create the braided image.

Women artisans in the two remaining burnay factories in Vigan are very rare nowadays, with them usually limited to molding small pots for demonstrations catering to visiting tourists.

We especially remember these women burnay potters, and acknowledge and honor their past and present contributions to cultural heritage because as we celebrate this year’s .
