Just in: ACCORD, Inc., one of Southern Leyte State University's environmentally focused partner organization, visited our campus for a productive meeting. The discussions were centered on preparing for a series of goal-oriented research and extension activities in Limasawa, Southern Leyte.

Spearheaded by the Research, Innovations, and Extension Services (RIES) Office, and with support from the dedicated faculty members of SLSU-Bontoc Campus, an exciting lineup of extension activities is now in motion.

Indeed, remarkable things happen when collaborative minds work together!

On 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟏𝟑, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒, Southern Leyte State University - Bontoc Campus held a Successful In-House Review and Evaluation of Research and Extension Programs, Projects, and Activities (PPAs)! This milestone event showcased the innovative research contributions of faculty and students, fostering collaboration and solutions across various fields.

Researchers, faculty, and extensionists presented completed projects, ongoing studies, and proposals on topics ranging from environmental conservation to technology solutions.

𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝘆𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 (𝗦𝗟𝗦𝗨) has been actively involved in marine ecosystem conservation efforts, and as part of this initiative, through the 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵, 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 (𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦) 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲, the 𝑪𝑶𝑻𝑺 𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑨𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒕𝒚 was conducted last November 28-29 and December 2,3, and 6, 2024 in five different sampling sites, respectively at Padre Burgos, Malitbog, San Francisco, Liloan, and Libagon in Southern Leyte.

The objective of this monitoring was to assess the presence and severity of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTS) in these areas, particularly in light of a potential outbreak and its impact on the surrounding coral reef ecosystem.

Overall, during the underwater assessment, presence of COTS was observed, specifically in the sampling sites in the municipalities of Liloan and San Francisco, Southern Leyte, having the most number of COTS collected in all sampling sites. The coasts of Southern Leyte are known for their rich and vibrant marine life, and this COTS infestation remains a major threat to this important resource.

Looking ahead, the importance of addressing a potential outbreak and by working together in implementing proactive should be recognized to help protect our valuable marine environment and ensure its continued health and resilience.

Southern Leyte State University - Bontoc Campus, in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) - Bontoc, successfully conducted the 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 on 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟒, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒.

This impactful activity was part of our continuous efforts to enhance and develop the agri-fishery sector in Southern Leyte. The training featured 𝐃𝐫. 𝐖𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐆𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐧 𝐂. 𝐃𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐨 as the resource person, who shared valuable knowledge and insights on broiler production and management techniques.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants, organizers, and partners who made this event a success. Together, we are driving sustainable agricultural growth and empowering our local communities!

𝗣𝗚𝗖 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘆𝗮𝘀 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗦𝗠𝗔𝗥𝟴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁

The Philippine Genome Center (PGC) Visayas Bioinformatics Team successfully conducted a bioinformatics training workshop on amplicon sequence assembly as part of the Amplicon Sequencing Made Available for Region 8 (ASMAR8) project. The training took place from November 20 to 22, 2024, at the University of the Philippines Tacloban College in Tacloban City, Philippines.

The three-day workshop introduced participants to the fundamentals of bioinformatics and its practical applications. The participants have gained hands-on experience in Linux-based coding, amplicon sequence analysis through data clean-up and assembly, and species identification using tools like BLAST and phylogenetic analysis.

Participants included faculty members from the University of the Philippines Tacloban College, Southern Leyte State University, and Visayas State University. They shared their research interests and explored ways to integrate the newly acquired bioinformatics skills into their respective fields of study.

This off-site training marked the final workshop under the ASMAR8 program. Through this initiative, PGC Visayas aimed to bring amplicon sequencing technology and other molecular techniques closer to researchers in Region 8.

This is line with the goal of the Philippine Genome Center to make amplicon sequencing, available at your footsteps.

𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟏 𝐒𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬!

On 𝐒𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟑𝟎, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒, we kicked off the 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 (𝐁𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐈𝐕) with great enthusiasm! The first day was a major success, with all participants showing strong motivation and mastering their initial dive skills.

What a day to celebrate! LGU Malitbog. Another successful mangrove planting was done in Malitbog, Southern Leyte, with the amazing support of SLSU Bontoc, specifically the experts, namely Ms. Janine Dimzon and Mr. Ryan Tomol.

Not only did we get our hands dirty for a greener tomorrow, but we also learned from the experts about the biology and ecological importance of these incredible trees. 🌍

Mangroves are true eco-heroes, safeguarding our shorelines, supporting marine life, and combating climate change!

This is just the beginning! Let's continue working hand-in-hand for a greener, more sustainable future!

On 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟴, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) - Bontoc Campus, DSWD-SLP in partnership with the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) - Sogod Southern Leyte, held a successful "Office Skills Training and Writeshop." The event focused on enhancing participants' skills in file management, word processing, and document creation, aiming to boost efficiency and productivity in various professional settings.

The event began with opening remarks by Dr. Gladys L. Pascual, SLSU-Bontoc Campus Director, and Nerissa M. Pesquera, DSWD-Sustainable Livelihood Program-Sogod Monitoring Project Development Officer. The day concluded with a final editing and feedback session, followed by the awarding of certificates to the participants.

𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆:

This training is part of SLSU's commitment to community engagement and capacity building. On 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟵, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, a dedicated team from the Fisheries and Marine Biology Department of SLSU-Bontoc assessed the proposed site in Maac, Sogod for a mariculture project. This initiative, part of the “𝗘𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶-𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝘆𝘁𝗲” program, is a collaborative effort with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and MSWDO-Sogod through its Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).
The project aims to establish a milkfish floating cage, which will be managed by members of the Maac Sustainable Livelihood Program Association, offering sustainable livelihood opportunities for the local community. 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟏𝟗, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 | 𝐀 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐃𝐨𝐧𝐞!

Congratulations to the twelve (12) LGU Palompon participants, in collaboration with SLSU Bontoc Campus, for successfully completing a dynamic three-day training, featuring an exceptional discovery dive and an open water refresher course.

Despite the limited time, the SLSU team, led by resident dive masters Ryan P. Tomol and Jerome Jack Napala, worked diligently to equip participants with essential diving skills. Throughout the training, the participants displayed remarkable excitement and eagerness to learn. Though some faced challenges, their perseverance and determination never wavered.

Your dedication and hard work have truly paid off.
We are confident that the enhanced diving skills you've acquired will be invaluable in conducting underwater assessments and other initiatives that support the promotion, management, and conservation of coastal resources.
