The highland village of Maligcong, a compact Igorot settlement in Bontoc municipality, is known for its centuries-old rice terraces – the remarkable top-to-bottom stone walled paddies that form stairs to the clouds. In some sections, the rice paddies form mini-amphitheaters. Every single rice paddy is irrigated by springs that originate from the towering mountains that surround the village.

The Maligcong rice terraces clearly attest to the ingenuous engineering skills, supreme workmanship and sheer industry of the I-Maligcong ancestors. Thus, it is no surprise that these terraces have been the top attraction to both local and international tourists who visit Mountain Province.

This page aims to BUILD AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING of the interlinking SOCIAL, CULTURAL, ECOLOGICAL and OTHER ISSUES which the village of Maligcong faces. These include the environmental challenges posed by rising commercial tourism, the denudation of forests which results to dwindling water resources on which the terraces critically depend, and activities such as mining. All these threaten the current and future state of Maligcong's rice terraces.

The rice terraces have withstood the tests of centuries. They have continued producing the organic rice that they have always produced since time immemorial.

The present generation must protect the rice terraces. Who else would? Who else must? Who else should?
