The Provincial Government of Lanao del Sur, through the Tourism, Culture and the Arts office and in collaboration with the Department of Tourism -Central Office, trained the tourism officers and tourism stakeholders from the different municipalities of Lanao del Sur (LdS) on Local Tourism Development Planning and Basic Tourism Statistics last May 15 -19, 2023 at Go Hotels, Robinsons Place, Iligan City.
The week-long training capacitated the participants to formulate tourism development plan using the Tourism Guidebook and provided them skills on local tourism data gathering to build a unified local tourism statistic database using the Standard Local Tourism Statistics System (SLTSS).
Ms. Baicarima Lantud-Pacasum, Municipal Tourism Officer of Lumbatan and President of the Association of Lanao del Sur Tourism Officers (ALTO) since its creation in 2019, learned from the training about the โsignificance of data-driven decision-making in promoting tourismโ.
She said, โThis lesson will greatly benefit me as a Tourism Officer as I work towards promoting tourism in the province. By understanding and utilizing basic tourism statistics, I will be equipped with the necessary tools to assess the current state of tourism in Lanao del SurโฆThe training has provided me with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions, develop strategic plans, and collaborate effectivelyโฆโ
Representatives from Tourism Enterprises in LdS were also part of the training enlightening them with their role and contribution in the tourism industry. Ms. Jenovah Paramata, the President of Pamorawag Inc., a newly organized group advocating and promoting tourism in the province, shared that the community should be equated in tourism development planning. According to her, โbeing a member of a volunteer organization that focuses on tourism, we understand that awareness campaign for tourism in the community is one of the key elements for continuous progress in our tourism industryโ.
Participants underwent series of intensive workshops to equip themselves with Local Tourism Planning Tools and Basic Tourism Data Gathering. They were provided with tools they can use to contribute in establishing a local tourism database and in formulating tourism development plan for their respective municipalities.
Mr. Ramil S. Basuel, OIC-Chief of the Tourism Development Planning Division, served as the lead trainer of the training. To effectively handle the modules of the training, he was joined by Ms. Faeroe Jeanne Fontanilla, Tourism Operations Officer II, and Ms. Carminah Garcia, Senior Tourism Operations Officer of the Statistics, Economic Analysis and Information Management Division.
The training culminated on May 19 with 37, out of the 45 registered participants, graduated from the training.
