๐จ Government has announced that people with a Migrant Exploitation Protection Work Visa will no longer be able to seek an extension. Currently, these visas are issued for a six-month period, with the ability to apply for a further six months.
We know this change will cause harm.
At CAB, we help migrant workers access the exploitation visa to leave abusive employment situations. Six months is often not enough time for their visa changes to be processed and then find a new job. Many of these clients need the extension to get these things sorted.
Having to return prematurely to their home country after suffering exploitation in NZ can have serious and ongoing consequences for these migrant workers and their families.
We spoke out in the media, highlighting the need to keep the extension and also calling for other changes urgently required for protecting the rights and wellbeing of migrant workers. These include untying work visas from individual employers and providing financial and practical support to help exploited workers get back on their feet again. We are looking at other things we can do to promote these measures.
