Our knowledge about the Gozos is heavily based on the surviving Novenario prints from โ€“ the earliest โ€“ the late 18th century. It offers us a glimpse of its original form. By far, the earliest we can dig (thanks to the generosity of Archivo de la Provincia Agustiniana de Filipinas in Valladolid, Spain) is the published novenario of 1788.

Printed in Manila in the printing press of the Seminario Conciliar y Real de San Carlos by Agustin de la Rosa y Balagtas, the earliest surviving novenario is in the Cebuano language.

Hence, the Gozos has been in Cebuano in its original form. But the said original version is not the same as the present form that we are using and what we have heard from the Papal Mass. The first โ€œGozosโ€ is very embellished and poetic in form. The rendition of the language is of classic example: metered and rhymed. It is in itself a product of fine poetry. The next Cebuano editions of the novenario (1858, 1888, and 1908) contain the almost unchanged Cebuano Gozos.

Since 1993, the revered Santo Niรฑo has remained enshrined within the Basilica Minore del Santo Niรฑo de Cebu, making public appearances only through replicas during processions and other special occasions.

Centuries-old, the revered statue of the Child Jesus resides within a bulletproof enclosure at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niรฑo de Cebu.

The inherent fragility of the centuries-old pinewood, from which the image was meticulously carved, necessitates its restricted use by the Augustinian community in Cebu. This prudent conservation measure prioritizes the image's long-term preservation over its participation in special occasions.

๐—ฃ๐—œ๐—ง ๐—ฆ๐—˜๐—ก๐—ฌ๐—ข๐—ฅ! | Andam naka moshagit og kusog? Let's unravel the meaning behind the Sinulog's iconic chant that resonates throughout the festival!

"Pit Senyor!" transcends mere words. It is the quintessential greeting of the Sinulog Festival. It's the sound of a community united in celebration. This contraction carries the same weight of devotion but adds a touch of intimacy.

THE MEANING OF PIT:
"Pit," a powerful contraction of "sangpit," the Cebuano call to action, a soul-stirring uproar that carries intent, embodies the act of invoking a higher power or individual with resolute purpose, resonating deeply within Cebuano culture.

In contrast to "appeal," which implies a formal request, "sangpit" evokes a more careful blend of respect, hope, and trust. This expression is frequently used in daily Cebuano conversation, such as when someone politely approaches a homeowner who isn't there to ask to borrow something, acknowledging their possible presence but still giving them space.

The exclamation "VIVA PIT SENYOR!" in prayer evokes a sense of distant supplication. Uttered with humility and awareness of one's unworthiness to directly confront the divine, it signifies a fervent cry for divine intervention, similar to gazing towards the heavens and pleading, โ€œLord, please hear my prayers!โ€

Remember this, the next time you hear "Pit Senyor!" during the fiesta seรฑor, remember the story it carries. It's a whisper of faith, a burst of devotion, a vibrant expression of love for the Santo Niรฑo. It's not just a greeting; it's Cebuano's soulful cry resonating from the heart of Cebu.

๐—ฉ๐—œ๐—ฉ๐—”! More than just a church, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niรฑo de Cebu holds a special place in the hearts of the Filipinos as one of the country's Minor Basilicas.

Just 23 churches across the Philippines bear the prestigious title of "Minor Basilica," declared by popes through the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. Recognized by Papal Bull Ut Clarificetur Nomen Domini on April 1, 1965, by Pope Paul VI, this sacred space not only houses the revered Santo Niรฑo but also embodies a unique set of privileges, obligations, and conditions that elevate its spiritual significance within the nation's religious landscape.

๐—ž๐—”๐—ฃ๐—Ÿ๐—”๐—š | The image of Santo Niรฑo was found in one of the houses of the natives of Cebu by Juan de Camuz, on April 28, 1565, making it the oldest relic in the country. It's the same image given as a baptismal gift by Ferdinand Magellan to Queen Juana. The surviving religious relic will be turning 460 years old this year since its discovery (1565-2025).

Preceding the dawn of Spanish colonization in Cebu, on April 1565, Juan de Camuz, a Spanish soldier and sailor of the ship โ€œCapitanaโ€, unearthed a venerated icon โ€“ the Santo Niรฑo โ€“ within the dwelling of one of the houses of the natives of Cebu.

This discovery, now considered the Philippines' oldest religious relic, marked a pivotal moment in the nation's religious transformation. Initially bestowed upon Queen Juana by Ferdinand Magellan as a baptismal gift, the Santo Niรฑo transcended its original purpose to become a potent symbol of faith and cultural amalgamation. As this treasured relic approaches its 460th anniversary, its presence continues to resonate deeply within the Filipino ethos.

"On April 28, 1565, the dramatic yet providential (pagkakaplag) of the same wooden image in a partially scorched hut started the distinctive Christian heritage of the Philippines."
