Thinking about the vastness of the universe and our connection to nature can be truly humbling. It's awe-inspiring to realize that the same fundamental elements and forces that shape the cosmos also make up our own bodies and the world around us. It's a reminder of our place in the grand scheme of things and the beauty of existence itself.

Philippines: Bohol Island

“The Philippines’ first UNESCO Global Geopark, Bohol Island, sits in the Visayas island group. The island’s geological identity has been pieced together over 150 million years, as periods of tectonic turbulence have raised the island from the ocean depths. Traces of the island’s subterranean past can be found in the limestone which forms characteristic karstic structures. The geopark abounds in karstic geosites such as caves, sinkholes and cone karst, including the famous cone-shaped Chocolate Hills in the centre of the geopark.”

“Asin Tibook is a salt from Albuquerque, Bohol, Philippines on the brink of extinction. It is made using a labor-intensive, pre-Hispanic method of production that coincided with the rice harvest. Traditionally, once the salt pots were made, salt-makers would barter them for kilos of rice grains.”

LOOK: Spotlight is on the rich and delectable Ubi as the Ube Festival 2023 draws near ♥

Did you know that Ubi, also known as ube in Tagalog, plays an important role in the culinary legacy of Bohol? Kinampay, a native cultivar, is especially prized for its aroma and flavor, and it is even featured in the regional hymn.

Ubi has a long history in the Philippines, with evidence of its existence discovered in remains of plant tissue pieces from Ille Cave in Palawan around 10,000 years ago. Ubi, botanically known as Dioscorea alata, is a human-cultivated plant connected with the Austronesian dispersal during the Neolithic Age. Aside from being renowned as a famine meal, the distinct flavor of this tuber is adored by Boholanos in both savory and sweet recipes.

First Global Geopark of the Philippines - BOHOL!

UNESCO DESIGNATES BOHOL ISLAND AS THE PHILIPPINES' FIRST GLOBAL GEOPARK

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designates Bohol Island as a Global Geopark after deliberations during the 216th UNESCO Executive Board Session held in Paris, France, on May 24, 2023. The Island Province now becomes the first and the only one in the Philippines to get the UNESCO designation.

The UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where sites and landscapes of international geological significance; are managed with a holistic concept of protection, education, and sustainable development. The Geopark has to be managed by a multi-disciplinary project team through a holistic approach, focusing on education and environmental sustainability.

Bohol's journey as a Global Geopark started in 2013 when a group of researchers from the University of the Philippines School of Urban and Regional Planning conducted field works on potential Geoparks in the country and identified the Province's geological karst and limestone landforms as a prospect.

In 2015, the researchers partnered with Bohol's Provincial Government by conducting research, collaborations, and workshops preparing for the UNESCO designation guided by the Philippine National Commission for UNESCO (UNACOM). Bohol became one of the 18 potentially new Global Geoparks nominated in 2022 for its geological significance and scientific importance.

Under the leadership of Governor Aris Aumentado, the direction since 2022 had embraced the Global Geopark campaign as an inclusive and multi-sectoral platform that can leverage Bohol’s position as a living laboratory for arts, culture, and heritage in the country and in the region; one that represents Bohol’s best and pride of place.

This move is consistent with the Strategic Change Agenda of the Provincial Government, under Governor Aumentado, that aims to make Bohol a smart province built on pride of place, human resource development, environmental sustainability, and innovations toward global competitiveness.
