All is not pretty under the sea

Marine photographer Brian Skerry, 54, started his career with the National Geographic in 1998, documenting the beauty of the oceans, immortalising in his frames the dance of soft coral, the lazy strokes of manatees and the sparkle of gleaming fish. But in the years since then, he has seen the underwa…

Ancient Lobe Coral
Photograph by Brian J. Skerry, National Geographic

Marine ecologist Enric Sala (foreground) examines an enormous lobe coral on Kingman Reef in the South Pacific’s remote Line Islands. This coral is 500 years old, but the species was unknown to science before Sala’s discovery. Such finds aren’t shocking at Kingman, which is one of the world’s most pristine reef ecosystems. The site shows scientists how much has been lost at reefs found closer to human habitation.

CROWN-OF-THORNS STARFISH

Crown-of-thorns starfish are one of the most damaging creatures of tropical coral reefs, particularly Australia's Great Barrier Reef. They are voracious predators that release the contents of their stomach on to the coral. Digestive juices then liquify the coral ready for consumption. A single individual can wipe out large areas in this way. They are almost completely covered in protective venomous spines capable of causing great pain in humans. Yet the crown-of-thorns starfish does have predators of its own, including molluscs, fish and worms. - www.bbc.co.uk/
