Peace Memorial Park

The monument of Rizal will definitely remind you that this is still part of the Philippines.
Located at the Peace Memorial Park, it is at the edge of Ground Zero, the infamous center of the Marawi Siege.
Flanking the park are two brand new buildings: School of Living Traditions and the Peace Museum. These were still closed when I visited.
Fronting the latter is the remnant of the bullet riddled minaret of the Bato Mosque that was built in 1980.
It is a stark reminder of the brutal siege that happened in the area.
A new structure was built as the former mosque has been demolished as it was badly damaged.
This park is well situated at an elevated location that provides sweeping vistas of the lake and the new Sarimanok Sports Stadium complex.

MSU - Marawi City

The main campus of the Mindanao State University (MSU) is in Marawai City.

It is not only a haven for scholarly and academic pursuits but is also an ideal location to appreciate the beauty of scenic Lake Lanao, especially from the golf course.

It has lush greenery and I think, one of the best places to take a walk.

“The Only Islamic City in the Philippines”

Marawi was called before as Dansalan and was the capital of the then undivided Lanao province from 1907-1940. The placed served as the port area for the ships going to the most areas of the province. It then converted into a chartered city on 1940 under the grant of manuel L. Quezon. The name was changed from Dansalan to Marawi on 1956.

The renaming of the city as “Islamic City of Marawi” was proposed by Parliamentary Bill No. 261 in the defunct Batasang Pambansa, the former parliament of the Philippines during the Marcos regime, reportedly to attract funds from the Middle East.

Ground Zero Marawi City

The 'ground zero' of the infamous 'Battle of Marawi which lasted for five months in 2017 no longer carries the smell of destruction.

‘Ground Zero’ 5 years later

Five years after the Marawi Siege, ‘Ground Zero,’ the former main battle area between government forces and the Islamic State-inspired Maute Group and its allies remains a ‘ghost town’ as residents have yet to return home.

New structures have been constructed but who will use them?

Only 95 families out of 17,793 families displaced from the 250-hectare,
24-barangay ‘Ground Zero’ have returned home, according to the Task Force Bangon Marawi.

Some 5,000 families are living in transitory shelters in the outskirts of the city, around 800 in permanent shelters.
