SAINT MARTIN DE PORRES

Unknown to many, aside from the fact that today marks the 145th foundation day of Pueblo de Yrocin, today is also the feast day of St. Martin de Porres, patron saint of social justice, racial harmony, and mixed-race people.

There are at least two famous chapels of St. Martin de Porres in Irosin: one is found along M. Roxas St. in Barangay San Julian, and another in Bliss, Barangay Monbon.

The chapel along M. Roxas St. was built by the late couple, Melanio and Maria Ubalde-Calinisan, as a gesture of thanksgiving for a miracle they attributed to the intercession of St. Martin de Porres. Today, the compound also includes the Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, established in the 1980s through the initiative of the late Msgr. Elias Pura.

St. Martin de Porres, whose feast day is celebrated today, November 3, was born in Lima, Peru, on December 9, 1579, to a Spanish nobleman and a freed Black woman from Panama. Despite his mixed heritage and poverty, which limited his opportunities, Martin was drawn to religious life from a young age. He became a lay brother in the Dominican Order, where he worked as a barber, surgeon, and infirmarian, offering medical care to both the community and the poor. Known for his profound humility, deep prayer life, and miraculous healings, he tirelessly served the sick and marginalized, often helping the needy in extraordinary ways, including bilocation and miraculous healing abilities. He established an orphanage and was deeply committed to social justice, advocating for the humane treatment of all people, regardless of race or social status. Canonized in 1962, St. Martin de Porres remains a beloved patron saint of social justice, racial harmony, and the poor.

HAPPY FEAST DAY, ST. MARTIN DE PORRES! Please always intercede for the people of Irosin.
