Malapascua Island

Malapascua is a Philippine island situated in the Visayan Sea, 6.8 kilometres (4.2 mi) across a shallow strait from the northernmost tip of Cebu Island. Administratively, it is part of the insular barangay of Logon, Daanbantayan, Cebu. Malapascua is a small island, only about 2.5 by 1 kilometre (1.55 by 0.62 mi), and has eight hamlets.

Sunset on Bounty Beach
Malapascua became famous fairly recently, only in the early 1990s as a dive destination. Prior to this, the island was known for its wide white sand beach, known as Bounty Beach; it has also become known for its beautiful coral gardens, coral walls and excellent local dive spots, as well as further-out sites including Gato Island, Monad Shoal, and Kemod Shoal. Monad Shoal is an underwater plateau where thresher sharks and manta rays can regularly be sighted.

Most of the islanders derive their livelihood from tourism, while some still rely on subsistence fishing and farming.

Religiously, Malapascua Island or barangay Logon is believed to be the place where the Virgin de los Desamparados made a miracle sometime in 1890 when the island had only nine households of the Monteclar, Deogrades, Rosales, Gulfan, Rubio, Bohol and Bruces families. It was said to be a piece of wood that had never burnt. In 1907 the parish priest of Kandaya, now Daanbantayan town, Rev. Fr. Inocentes Maga,[1] baptized it of its name upon the request of the local residents. The size of the image is not the original size and it is said to be growing until present. Devotees from different parts of the country and even abroad come during the feast days on May 11 and 12. The chapel was originally made of coconut palm and leaves but now it is made of steel and cement.

Similar to other islands, natives were dependent on fishing as a source of livelihood. Agricultural products such as corn and rice were supplied from neighboring islands, such as Cebu and Leyte. With the population increasing and fish stocks dwindling, tourism came to the rescue. Nowadays, the majority of islanders either directly or indirectly make a living out of tourism, which is developing rapidly. The growth of tourism has also increased local immigration to the island, thus the demand for housing. The lack of a pier for bigger boats - due to financial constraints - is keeping a brake on construction growth.

Moalboal

Since the 1970s, Moalboal has developed a tourism industry based on recreational diving and beaches. Panagsama Beach is where most resorts and restaurants are established. Further north on the peninsula, in Saavedra, is White Beach (Basdako), a two-kilometre (1.2 mi) beach which still has sand. This beach used to be quieter and mostly frequented by locals, but has only recently developed a tourist trade.

In Moalboal most tourists stay at either Panagsama Beach (Basdiot) or White Beach (Basdako), known for its beautiful sandy beach both located 3–5 kilometres (1.9–3.1 mi) away from the bus stop in Moalboal. It is easy to find transportation from the bus stop to either beach.

There is plenty of accommodation near either beach, although Panagsama is most recommended as this area has the most bars, restaurants, people and dive shops. Since the resorts in the area cater mostly to divers, entertainment is laid back and more of a chilled out pub style atmosphere. Pescadores Seaview Suites is one of the most recent establishments in 2017 that brings a taste of Filipino hospitality and eco-tourism catering to couples, travelers and families alike.

Recreational diving is the main tourist activity in Moalboal, and is considered very good, even according to Philippine standards. The reefs along the west coast of the Copton peninsula are home to a great variety of marine life. Pescador Island, about 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) off the coast, is the most popular dive spot with an underwater cave called the Cathedral. The structure of the reef that follows the entire coast line has made the place ideal for scuba-diving, snorkeling and freediving. Divers can enjoy easy access to the reef since the drop off is shallow and close to shore but drops down to more than 40 metres (130 ft). On typical days, a number of turtles are often seen very close to the shore line especially at Tonggo Point which is in front of Pescadores Seaview Suites.

Other popular tourist attractions such as waterfalls, caves and canyons are found within 20 kilometres (12 mi) of Moalboal. A 3-hour canyoning trekking adventure starts from Matutinao ends at the Kawasan falls. It is one of the many renowned tours offered to young individuals and to the young at heart. For the slow-paced tourists, a relaxing 10 minute stroll to the Kawasan falls is enough for a day's activity

Tops

Tops Lookout is one of the most overrated tourist spots in Cebu. It can be found in Barangay Malubog, Busay, Cebu City in the Philippines. The entrance of Tops along the main road of Busay is fronting the entrance of Doce Pares Zip-line Adventure. Other attractions which can be found in the mountainous areas of Cebu are Hidden Paradise Mountain Resort, Q Park, The Family Park, Cebu Taoist Temple and a lot more.

Tops is owned by Emro Holdings Inc. and has an entrance fee of P100.00 for all visitors which you’re going to pay before entering the place. Locals and Foreigners have the same rate and there is no special rate for children. Once inside, you’re going to be dismayed because it’s not the biggest bang for your buck.

It is about 30-40 minutes from the center of Cebu. You will already see the City even if you’re not inside Tops Lookout. When inside, you can see the wonderful view and the spectacular city lights of Cebu and Mactan. Bohol is not too visible during nighttime but you can still see some lights. Tops is about 2000 above sea level and it has about 1 hectare in area. The main ground is decorated by concretes in hexagon form and withered Bermuda grasses. The covered resting and eating area is wonderfully made by big concrete stones and designed in curves and circles. The tables and sitting area which can be used by anyone are made of concrete too. There used to be several stores that are opened in the place but lately, there are only 2 left. One is a souvenir shop which sells keychains, cellphone charms, magnetic decors, bracelets, necklace and hats. The other store is selling snacks such as junk foods, sodas, beers, juices and noodles. I suggest you bring your own food as the price is doubled.

Fort San Pedro

Fuerte de San Pedro is a military defence structure in Cebu (Philippines), built by the Spanish under the command of Miguel López de Legazpi, first governor of the Captaincy General of the Philippines. It is located in the area now called Plaza Indepedencia, in the pier area of the city. The original fort was made of wood and built after the arrival of Legazpi and his expedition. In the early 17th century a stone fort was built to repel Muslim raiders. Today's structure dates from 1738 and is the oldest triangular bastion fort in the country. It served as the nucleus of the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. During the Philippine Revolution at the end of the 19th century, it was attacked and taken by Filipino revolutionaries, who used it as a stronghold.

The fort is triangular in shape, with two sides facing the sea and the third side fronting the land. The two sides facing the sea were defended with artillery and the front with a strong palisade made of wood. The three bastions are named La Concepción (SW); Ignacio de Loyola (SE), and San Miguel (NE). It has a total inside area of 2,025 square metres (21,800 sq ft). The walls are 6.1 metres high by 2.4 metres thick (20 feet high by 8 feet thick), and the towers are 9.1 metres (30 ft) high from the ground level. The circumference is 380 metres (1,248 ft). The sides are of unequal lengths and the one fronting the city is where one may find entry into the fort. Fourteen cannons were mounted in their emplacements most of which are still there today. Work first started in 1565 with Miguel Lopéz de Legazpi breaking ground.

Basilica Minore del Santo Nino Church

The Basílica Menor del Santo Niño de Cebú (Minor Basilica of the Holy Child of Cebú) commonly known as the Santo Niño Basilica, is a minor basilica in Cebu City in the Philippines that was founded in the 1565 by fray Andrés de Urdaneta, O.S.A. and Diego de Herrera, O.S.A.. The oldest Roman Catholic church in the country, it is built on the spot where the image of the Santo Niño de Cebú was found during the expedition of Miguel López de Legazpi. The icon, a statue of the Child Jesus, is the same one presented by Ferdinand Magellan to the chief consort of Rajah Humabon upon the royal couple's christening on April 14, 1521. It was found by a soldier forty years later, preserved in a wooden box, after Legazpi had razed a local village. When Pope Paul VI made the church a basilica in 1965, he said it is "the symbol of the birth and growth of Christianity in the Philippines.
