"Where are the trash bins?"
That’s what a foreigner asked on the Boracay beachfront today. Not where the best drinks are, not where the sunset’s best viewed. No. Trash bins. The guy was wandering around with empty bottles in hand, trying to find a place to dispose of them properly. Spoiler: it wasn’t easy.
We ended up taking his bottles because we saw him struggling, and he was so grateful you’d think we handed him gold. But it got me thinking—how determined does one have to be just to do the right thing here? How hard are we making it to keep paradise clean for everyone?
So, here’s a thought: If we’re as quick to snap pics of Boracay’s beauty as we are to leave our trash behind, maybe we should also ask—where are the trash bins? And more importantly, why aren’t there enough of them?
It’s not just the tourists’ responsibility to care. It’s ours.
