Challenge Blue to Green

During this pandemic, we started a Challenge among the Abyss families called the “Abyss Blue to Green”. This project aims to provide food security, teach new skills to the families and create a sustainable environment.

Member staff were encouraged to plant fruits and vegetables in their homes or backyards.
The rules include:
They have to plant only fruits/vegetables that they can eat or sell.
They are encouraged to use recycled and reused materials (such as discarded plastic bottles and containers).
Involve their family in the farming process.
Send photos of their progress during the next 3 months.

The winner of this challenge not only grows food for themselves but will get a sack of rice from the company at the end of the challenge.

We couldn't set this challenge without thinking of you. This is why you have a big role to play in this Challenge.

We will be posting testimonials and select the best pics weekly of each member garden and let you vote for the Greenest thumb .

Every Friday we will be posting a POLL on our page. So be updated and vote for your favorite garden!

THEY NEED YOUR VOTES!

Thanks to all participants!

INTO THE LIFE OF A DIVEMASTER
In this video Vincent sits down between 2 dives in malapascua island with Bruce, a divemaster in the Philippines. Bruce is the most experienced divemaster in Abyssworld with over 20 years of guiding on our dive safari around the Visayas seas.

The discussion starts by introducing the work of a divemaster, giving some tips for young divemasters. What is their job and how do they become a better divemaster?

Thanks for watching!

Please watch and share with all the Visayan Filipinos!

The situation in the Philippines is not yet critical as we are seeing min other European countries.
However the capacity of the health care system here is not the same as in Europe.
For now Manila is the most affected region in the Philippines, but the rest of the country is trying to prevent the spread and bracing for what may come.

Today I can see how many groups of people are coming together to find solutions for helping doctors and each other (giving food, free room accommodations for doctors around hospitals, making masks/PPE...).

We can all do something in this Covid-19 crisis.
Here is a Binisaya video to spread awareness around the Visayas.

Thanks for watching and sharing. 💙

Today I would like to share an article from Lamave.org.

Who they are?

LAMAVE : Large Marine Vertebrates Research Institute Philippines is the largest independent non-stock non-government organization dedicated to the conservation of marine megafauna and the marine environment in the Philippines.
They strive for conservation through scientific research, policy and education.

It is their 8th year of interesting research on whale sharks.

I often have the pleasure to welcome some of the researchers on board to share a bit of their knowledge with us while looking for the whale sharks in Southern Leyte.

Keep it up guys! You rock !🤘

Take a few minutes today to read this very interesting article. 😀

What 8 years of research by LAMAVE tell us about the iconic whale shark: impact of tourism, provisioning, scarring, Philippines is a whale shark hotspot, sharks make large scale movements, international movements in Southeast Asia,

First DSDs with Judith & Radawan!
It’s been quite a salty week at our dive center on Pangangan Island! Among our guests were Discover Scuba Diving participants Radawan and Judith from France.

They enjoyed an excellent couple of dives at Cabilao Island along with some beautiful shallow snorkelling during the surface interval. Sunlit corals, enormous turtles 🐢 and clouds of colourful fish🐟 all put on an entertaining treat for our first-timers.
Not bad at all for their first scuba experience! 💪
Congratulation!!
Please to see you again 😃

If you have experience of diving on SCUBA then you will already have experienced the magic of breathing underwater, (Open circuit). However being a spectator of the sea life is totally different to being apart of it.
Rebreather (close circuit: CCR) doesn’t have bubbles and is virtually silent.
This meant that you become apart of the environment and as you’re not making noise or producing lots of bubbles, the sea life doesn’t swim away.
The other benefits to diving on CCR are optimum gas mix, dive duration and perfect buoyancy.

Rebreathers are often seen as a dark and scary side of scuba diving but they’re starting to creep their way into the recreational side and you can even do your PADI Open Water on a rebreather if you like.

Abyssworld launch the first dive safari 100% made for rebreather diver!

THE SECRET LIFE OF A CLOWNFISH.

The creators of the animated film "Finding Nemo" didn't tell us everything about the clownfish. From the role of its white stripes to its struggle for reproduction and hermaphroditism, there's much more to discover about this fascinating star of our coral reefs.

A larva drifts in the middle of the ocean, left to its own devices in the vastness of the sea. The egg that housed it hatched a few days ago, and it is now preparing to return to the reef. The transparent larva then transforms into a juvenile, with its shimmering colors and vertical white bars. It begins the "recruiting" phase, in which it seeks out a sea anemone to house it for the remainder of its life.
A future Nemo? Not exactly.
There are actually 28 different clownfish species, each with anywhere between zero and 3 white bars. Our friend Nemo, also known by the name of Amphiprion ocellaris, is one of the most common.

One, two, three white bars

The famous white bars appear during larva to juvenile metamorphosis, as part of the recruitment phase. Their appearance actually takes place under the control of thyroid hormones.
The white bars appear in a specific order—from the head toward the tail by way of the trunk.

A surprising social structure

the sea anemone, as well as overall social structure. The latter is dominated by a large female, who defends the anemone from small predators. Then comes a smaller male, along with a number of juveniles that form a line according to their size.
Sometimes the female is killed by a grouper, or some other passing predator." The female's role is then assumed by the male, a case referred to as successive hermaphroditism.
Following the same logic, the first juvenile in line would transform into a male, with the ensuing fish advancing one step in line.
"In Finding Nemo the mother clownfish dies, and the father takes care of his young as they experience lots of adventures.
In reality, Nemo's father would transform into a mother, Nemo into a father, and the two would have babies together!
We understand why the film company changed reality!"
Each fish carefully defends its role in this hierarchy.
imagine that certain juveniles can wait 10, 20, or 30 years before their turn comes!
The life expectancy of a clownfish is between 30 to 50 years, which is enormous for a fish of that size."

At one with the sea anemone

The relation of the clownfish to its environment is also fascinating.
The anemone feeds on the excrement of the clownfish. Anemones, which are photosynthetic, produce oxygen during the day, but lack it at night. If the water doesn't circulate they end up in hypoxia, a situation in which oxygen supply does not meet their needs. "A marvelous form of behavior has been observed.
At night, the clownfish bat their fins in order to constantly send oxygenated water toward the anemone.

An anemone without a clownfish grows less quickly, and doesn't do as well.
I believe that if we were to lose clownfish, we would quickly lose anemones as well.

Can you imagine a coral reef without sea anemones?"

The Mystery of The Chocolate Hills of Bohol :
More than 1,268 cone-shaped hills – a very strange geological formation that has baffled a lot of geologists. The hills are spread over an area of 50 square kilometers or more and vary in size from 30 meters to 120 meters in height.

What’s unique with these limestone chocolate hills is that they are only covered in grass and the cone shape is more or less common to all although differing in size. The hills look chocolaty only during dry season when the grass withers and turns into brown.🍫

Grass species found to thrive on the hills are Imperata cylindrical and Saccharum spontaneum and several Compositae and ferns. 🌿Trees grow only on the base of the hills. 🌴
Likewise, the flatlands surrounding the hills are given to rice and corn farming and results in a beautiful green backdrop for the Chocolate Hills. Elevation ranges from 100 meters to 500 meters above sea level.

Mystery still surrounds how the Chocolate Hills were formed. 🤫

Two giants fought for days, threw stones and sand to each other. When they were finally exhausted, they made friends and left the island, but left behind the mess they made.💪

More romantic is the handsome young and very strong giant, Arogo, who fell in love with a mortal woman called Aloya. When, as mortals must, she died, the giant wept, his teardrops turned into hills, as a lasting proof of his grief.😭

The most acceptable geological theory of the Chocolate Hills of Bohol is that the hills were the result of thousands of years of weathering of marine limestone. Others say that the hills were formed ages ago by the uplift of coral deposits or that they erupted from the sea in a massive geologic shift, and the action of rain water and erosion for the past thousand years put in the finishing touches.
