We enjoyed the sights, we marveled at the stories, and we fully immersed into the historic atmosphere of it all!

Such memorable times and many, many unforgettable tours! 😊

I was still serving as the Protocol Officer of the National Museum Philippines' (NMP) Office of the Director when this photo was taken several years back, in 2015. Back then, the majority of the VIP guests of the Director's Office was designated to me to be toured around the various museum buildings and galleries comprising the NMP Complex in Manila. As such, I had this treasury of great experiences of touring around the museum a number of foreign ambassadors and diplomats from various nations, who were assigned to hold office in their respective embassies here in the Philippines. I had the honor, as well, of being assigned as Museum Guide for a number of Filipino former ambassadors and retired diplomats visiting the museum. The National Museum is under the very competent leadership of Director General Jeremy Barns, my former employer, whom I will always be grateful for. During my 10-year tenure at the institution, it was him who entrusted to me and my humble tour guiding skills, the most stellar of the National Museum's VIP guests. I remember that our guests were invariably much impressed with the upwards trajectory that the National Museum was taking on, with a vigorous and strong momentum that continues on, even to this very day... 🙂🏛🇵🇭

Here is the celebrated guided tour of the National Museum by a professional who has mastered the art of heritage storytelling, a veteran of more than a thousand museum tours who is fondly referred to as the "Ultimate Museum Guide" by those in the know, who had served as the stellar institution’s foremost Museum Guide and Protocol Officer. After a decade of public service at the National Museum, he bid farewell to the institution and decided to strike a path on his own in order to become a freelance tour guide in Manila. He is also a licensed professional teacher but whose preferred academia are these hallowed historic grounds within which he is most at home, and whose chosen advocacy is to promote 'Museum-education-for-all.’ He is a career visual artist and Filipino Heritage Storyteller, Mr. J.R. Arella.

For more than a decade now, he has been doing his own unique brand of intellectual museum tour that was formerly available only to a very select few, mainly V.I.P. guests and celebrities, and local and foreign dignitaries, but is now open to the general public for the very first time. His is a walking tour unlike any other for it is by equal measure an exercise of the body and of the mind, as well as the oft enslumbered patriotic soul. It is a memorable experience that could only be described in one way: "Walking With The Manila Maharlikha".

THROWBACK TOURS

Here's a 2013 photo of me with National Artist Benedicto "BenCab" Cabrera posing in front of one of his ethereally beautiful "Sabel" masterpieces that is currently exhibited at the 3rd Floor of the National Museum of Fine Arts. Such a soft-spoken gentleman, and I got to admire his kindness even more when I saw that he was listening intently to the Philippine art stories that I had to share as we walked the galleries. Luck struck twice, as I got the chance to tour him again for a second time just a few years later... I'll try to find that second photo with BenCab and upload it in a future post. 🙂

Such an awesome collection of heritage-loving Filipinos who have made the best decision of registering for WWTMM’s “Of Art & History” educational public tour one fine Saturday morning. While walking the various galleries, our tour group enjoyed some earnest discussions on Philippine history and marveled about the significance of art in our people’s glorious journey towards nation building. Tour discussions and viewing masterful artworks make up just half of what makes museum visits worthwhile, meeting wonderful individuals carrying the same patriotic flame in their hearts completes the experience.

"HERITAGE IS FOR EVERYONE."

The HEARTS TOUR has become a perfect chance to make new friends and connect with like-minded people who possess the same passion for Filipino arts, and those with keen interest in our nation's heritage that is more often than not, cloaked in mystery and hazy enigma. It is the challenge of the "heritage storyteller" to make sense of the concepts of the Philippines' multi-faceted culture, and deliver it in a comprehensive and enjoyable manner during the 2-hour span of the tour.

The ultimate reward is to see the happy faces of the guests who gave their time and energy as they walked through the galleries, in this case, the attendees of WWTMM's HEARTS TOUR...
