This 1930s photo shows the ramp leading up the Baluartillo de San Francisco Javier from Plaza Moriones. The Baluartillo was built to defend Fort Santiago from attacks coming from Manila Bay, protecting Fort Santiago and the mouth of the Pasig River before the Port Area was reclaimed.
A tunnel, slightly outside of view on the left, leads to a reducto or fortin, an outerwork which adds protection to the bulwark. The American flag was first officially raised in Manila over the Baluartillo on 13 August, 1898.
The bulwark was heavily damaged during the 1945 Battle of Manila, along with other structures in Intramuros. It was eventually restored in the 1950s.

This undated photo shows the original Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno in its altar in San Nicolas Church in Intramuros.
The image of the Nazareno in Intramuros gained popularity in Manila and a second image was commissioned from Mexico and was placed in the church sacristy. The sacristy image was transferred from Intramuros to Quiapo in 1787 by Archbishop Basilio Sancho y Santas Justa y Rufina and would later be known as the image of Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno of Quiapo.
Both the original image and the church of San Nicolas in Intramuros were destroyed in 1945 during the World War II Battle of Manila.
The devotion to the Jesus Nazareno in Quiapo Church continued to develop and grow over the years up to the present times. It is deeply embedded in Filipino devotees especially those who identify themselves with the passion and suffering of Jesus Christ which the statue depicts.

This photo taken in March 1945 shows the damaged Fort Santiago Main Gate in Intramuros, Manila.
During World War II, Fort Santiago was severely damaged when American forces blasted their way inside to flush out the Japanese who sought refuge in the fort and refused to give up the fight. The main gate was destroyed, and the only remnants of the original structure are the two carved stone sentries on its sides.
After the war, Fort Santiago, including the main gate, was restored. Recognized for its significance in the history of the Filipino people through the centuries, Fort Santiago has been a National Shrine and National Monument since 1951, and a National Cultural Treasure since 2014.
See this gateway to history when you visit the historic Walled City.

This 1932 photo shows a Christmas party for children held at St. Paul’s Hospital in Intramuros, Manila on 23 December 1932. The group photo shows hospital staff dressed for the holiday party with three Maryknoll Sisters and the children.
The St. Paul’s Hospital was located along General Luna at the corner of Anda Street in Intramuros. It had been begun by the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres, and later on by the Maryknoll Sisters. The hospital provided general hospital services, and opened its training school for nurses in 1908.
The hospital was destroyed during the Battle of Manila in 1945, and was never rebuilt.
As we celebrate the merriest time of the year, may the spirit of sharing and giving our time, love and joy to others remain in our hearts, not just this season, but all throughout the year.
