2024 ADVENT REFLECTIONS
Fourth Week

What is extraordinary about the Nativity story is how ordinary it is – leaving aside the host of angels and the visit of the Three Kings which we can take as being symbolic add-ons. They symbolise, though, just how wonderful is this new member of the human species - one of those who justify our calling ourselves homo sapiens. But the wonder glows in the ordinary, like Christmas tree lights when you walk into a darkened living-room.

Jesus did not come from a poverty-stricken family but an artisan class, not a royal prince or part of any elite. Not finding a room at an inn when there is a big conference in town has happened to many others. He was born in a manger, which could mean a ‘place for sheep’. Later authors described it as a cave. Caves are ancient symbols of an encounter with God. Origen thought it might have been a cave where sheep were kept, perhaps on an old site of the god Tammuz, patron of shepherds. Whatever the facts, shepherds are strongly in the symbolic picture. Jesus later called himself the ‘good shepherd’ and the oldest artistic representation of him is as a young shepherd carrying the lost sheep over his shoulders. Although in ancient Israel, when they were nomads, shepherds had a good public image, by the time of Jesus they had become a despised class. From the circumstances of his birth, all this suggests, Jesus was equally able to handle the rich and powerful but was preferentially turned towards the poor and the marginalised.

The eternal Word that became flesh in a cave in Bethlehem also forms and takes shape in us through our daily lives.

Everything we do, think, say, everything that just happens to us and evokes a response, consciously or otherwise, has an influence on this formation. St Paul, as a spiritual guide to his communities, experienced the pains of childbirth as ‘Christ is formed in you’ (Gal 4:19). It is a birthing, an embodiment of the Selfhood of God, that takes place in the deepest part of us; and yet it is felt by those with whom we live, especially those who have a special concern for us – as we for them. This is the experience both of personal intimacy and of community.

Br Lawrence, a Carmelite lay brother in a busy monastery in Paris in the 17th century, was renowned for his depth of experience of God’s presence. It radiated from him and he led others to awaken to it. He had to go to the market every day and haggle over the price of the groceries and then supervise a busy kitchen. He said he felt the presence more strongly there than in church. The continuous sense of the presence of Christ is the goal of meditation and of Advent which now culminates in the season of Christmas. The message is, don’t become too pious, too self-conscious, too artificially elitist about your mindful living in the birth of the Word. Brother Lawrence understood the amazing revelation of God in the ordinary and that it doesn’t mean we have to become special holy looking people, just our true selves: ‘We should apply ourselves unceasingly to this one end, to so rule all our actions that they may be little acts of communion with God; but they must not be studied, they must come naturally, from the purity & simplicity of the heart.’

As the Word becomes flesh in our bodies, minds, feelings and all our relationships, more and more of who I am becomes embodied in the Word. Which is, of course the main reason we say ‘happy Christmas’ not just ‘happy holidays’. Happy Christmas!

MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

Greetings!

The most common greeting of the Koreans is “Annyong haseyo?” When I first heard this greeting, not knowing how to respond, I said: “Ewan ko sa iyo!”
—————-
Today is the fourth Sunday of Advent. Today, we light the candle of “LOVE” in our Advent wreath. “Annyeong haseyo” is a beautiful greeting of the heart which literally means “Are you at peace?” coming from a heart reaching out with love. On the other hand, “Ewan ko sa iyo” means “I don’t know about you” coming from a heart that is indifferent and proud.
—————-
In today’s Gospel (Luke 1:39-45), we hear the beautiful greeting of Elizabeth to her cousin Mary: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” It speaks of Mary’s exaltation as a woman not so much because of herself, as because of the fruit of her womb, Jesus.
—————-
The greetings we make bring out how we feel and how we think. How do we greet each other at Christmas? Let us be led to the true meaning of Christmas. Case in point is how we greet others at Christmas. Check out if your Christmas greeting is shallow or deep.
—————-
“Happy Holidays!” For some people, Christmas is just one big cozy, enjoyable, holiday, full of revelry and celebration, devoid of religious meaning.
—————-
“Season’s Greetings!” This greeting is all about celebrating as a season, the “most beautiful time of the year.” And so, ’tis the season to be jolly and merrymaking all the way!
—————-
“Merry Xmas!” This greeting mentions “Christmas” but “Christ” is deleted with an “X.” Christ is not an unknown “X” person, but a historical person who lived among us and who made a difference in our world. Christmas without Christ is no Christmas at all.
—————-
“Merry Christmas!” This is the most used Christmas greeting. It is a well-meaning wish for people to be merry and happy, but it can be a shallow greeting which is focused on the commercial and material aspects of Christmas. Often, it is used as a greeting for solicitation.
—————-
“Mary Christmas!” This is the greeting I use and propose. The first Christmas was Mama Mary’s Christmas. It was poor, quiet, and simple, but it was full of hope, joy, peace, and love. May we, like Joseph and Mary, take time to be still and focus not on the external decorations, nor on the gifts as on the child Jesus in our hearts. A prayerful and a grateful Christmas!
—————-
“Blessed Christmas!” This reminds us that our greatest blessing on this earth is “God’s Only Begotten Son” given unto us. It is a reminder for us that we who have been blessed must also share our blessings with others, especially the poor and the suffering in our midst.
—————-
“Joyful Christmas!” More than happiness, which is based on happenings or events around us, may we experience joy which this world cannot give nor take away. Christmas joy comes from the heart that has accepted the Lord, a heart that has accepted forgiveness and reconciliation, and has opened up, giving joy to other people.
—————-
With love, Christmas is not heavy and burdensome with Christ. With love, Christmas is light and bright. Let us focus on the Lord, not on the load, especially at Christmas.
—————-
Sharing with you a heartwarming message passed on from my sister Bing in wintry Washington.
“A Christmas letter from Jesus”
When you look for me at Christmas; You won’t need a special star
I’m no longer just in Bethlehem; I’m right here where you are
You may not be aware of me; amid the celebrations
You’ll have to look beyond the stores and all the decorations.
But if you take a moment from your list of things to do.
To close your eyes and say a prayer; I’m waiting here for you
You’re the one I want to be with, You’re the reason that I came
And you’ll find me in the stillness; Where I’m whispering your name.
—————-
Wishing you all a Mary Christmas—simple, joyful, peaceful, hope-fulfilled, love-filled, and Christ-filled Christmas! One with you in prayer and hope for a better Philippines, a better world to which God sent His only begotten Son out of love for us.
—————-
A moment with the Lord: Lord, may we not belittle nor snub your loving greetings and love for us. Amen.

2024 ADVENT REFLECTIONS
Third Week

Here in the Northern hemisphere we are approaching the nadir of the year, December 21st, the shortest day. Nadir comes from an Arabic word meaning ‘opposite’, referring here to the opposite of the zenith, which is the highest point in the celestial sphere. The nice thing about opposites is that when you get all the way to the end you meet the other coming towards you – which is what Advent is about too.

If you’re in the southern hemisphere, the same date is the longest day. From this point the days get lighter or darker, longer or shorter. It’s hard to believe, deep in a Northern winter, that the days are really getting longer but they are and eventually you have to believe it. So also in the cyclical revolution of our own lives, ascends merge into new beginnings and periods of darkness and hopelessness generate a new dawn. All we have to do is stay the course, persevere till the end, and the transformation happens. As the rabbi said, ‘God does not expect us to be perfect but we are not allowed to give up.’

St John says that ‘God is light and in God there is no darkness at all’ (1Jn 1:5). This is a fundamental Christian insight into the divine paradox where opposites are united. For every statement we make about God we have to allow for the opposite. What seems so often like an enemy, a disrupter or a negation is quickly rejected. But in our impatience and insecurity we miss the bounce effect when the meeting of opposites brings about a truly happy marriage.

God who is light is also complete darkness, whom ‘no one has ever seen or can see’, living in a light that ‘no one can even come near’ (1 Tim 6:16). As the union of opposites, God is light and darkness. This union is the absolute nature of peace, not as the world gives it but as God pours it out beyond understanding. We prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus at the bounce-point when the shortest grows and the darkest becomes lighter.

Yes, God reveals himself but He also hides in what He reveals. This happened when the Godhead poured himself into the human vessel of Jesus. Some glimpsed, some guessed, some saw for a moment but couldn’t trust what they felt. But others were shocked and frightened at what was being revealed not just to them but within them. That fear leads to the greatest of all rejections of reality. The Christmas story contains this dark shadow cast by the intense light when it is blocked.

Does this encounter with paradox help us to move into ‘enlightenment’? Surely, we pray, meditate, act, think and talk so we can better understand, see more. Or do we? Perhaps we meditate not to see more clearly or understand the mystery better so that we can better become the mystery, by sharing in the nature of God. Enlightenment is not about seeing the light but becoming the light.

In the presence of darkness we must emit and radiate the light of our own spirit, which is never less than the light of God. This light penetrates our darkest moments and deeds. At the end of the cycle, light is irresistible. Darkness can bear to resist no longer and that is what makes Christmas happy.

Today is the Feast of St. John of the Cross.

“In the twilight of life, God will not judge us on our earthly possessions and human success, but rather on how much we have loved.”

~ St. John of the Cross

John was born in 1542. He became a Carmelite friar in his youth but considered leaving the Order to pursue a more contemplative way of life. He was thinking of joining the Carthusians when he met St. Teresa of Avila, who persuaded him instead to become one of the first friars of her reform. He became one of her closest and most loyal collaborators in her work of reforming the Carmelite Order. They met much opposition and John was even imprisoned by friars opposed to reform. After Teresa’s death, John’s loyalty to her vision for the Discalced friars and nuns brought him into disagreement with the new leaders of the reform, who sent him into exile. He died 1591.

John was a mystic and is known for his teaching on contemplative prayer, and especially for his poetry which expresses the union of the soul with God. It is considered some of the most beautiful lyric poetry in the Spanish language. He also wrote four major theological commentaries: The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Dark Night, The Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love.

Prayer:

Lord, you endowed St. John of the Cross, with a spirit of self denial and love of the Cross. By following his example, may we come to the eternal vision of your glory. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Our Lady of Guadalupe first introduced herself as the Mother of God and the mother of all humanity when she appeared on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico in 1531. An indigenous peasant, Juan Diego, saw a glowing figure on the hill. After she had identified herself to him, Our Lady asked that Juan build her a shrine in that same spot, in order for her to show and share her love and compassion with all those who believe.

Afterwards, Juan Diego visited Juan de Zumárraga, who was Archbishop of what is now Mexico City. Zumárraga dismissed him in disbelief and asked that the future Saint provide proof of his story and proof of the Lady’s identity.

Juan Diego returned to the hill and encountered Our Lady again. The Virgin told him to climb to the top of the hill and pick some flowers to present to the Archbishop.

Although it was winter and nothing should have been in bloom, Juan Diego found an abundance of flowers of a type he had never seen before. The Virgin bundled the flowers into Juan's cloak, known as a tilma. When Juan Diego presented the tilma of exotic flowers to Zumárraga, the flowers fell out and he recognised them as Castilian roses, which are not found in Mexico.

What was even more significant, however, was that the tilma had been miraculously imprinted with a colorful image of the Virgin herself.

This actual tilma, preserved since that date and showing the familiar image of the Virgin Mary with her head bowed and hands together in prayer, represents the Virgin of Guadalupe. It remains perhaps the most sacred object in all of Mexico.

In 1990, Pope Saint John Paul II visited Mexico and beatified Juan Diego. 10 years later, in the year 2000, he was declared a Saint.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.

10/12/2024

Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto.

Tradition holds that a small house in Loreto, Italy, originated in Nazareth and is the actual home of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The dimensions are very small, one-room measuring 30 x 13 feet. It is composed simply of stones and mortar found in Palestine and hand-chiseled in a style consistent with the time of Jesus. This was thought to be the home of Saints Anne and Joachim, Mary’s parents. The Immaculate Conception occurred in this house. It is here that the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, and with her “Fiat,” the Incarnation happened in this very house. This was also the house that the Holy Family lived in Nazareth after returning from their time in Egypt. Jesus lived here until he was 30 and began his public ministry. Here also is where St. Joseph died.

Pope Francis, in his decree, points out:

“That sanctuary recalls the mystery of the Incarnation and prompts all those who visit it to consider the fullness of time when God sent his Son, born of a woman, and to meditate on both the words of the angel in the Gospel and the words of Virgin who answered the divine call. Overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, the humble servant of the Lord has become the house of divinity, the most pure image of the holy Church.”

Our Lady of Loreto, pray for us.

“And upon entering, the Angel said to her: “Hail full of grace. The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.””

~ Luke 1:28

Today is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

"The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin."

In 1854, Pope Pius IX's solemn declaration, "Ineffabilis Deus," clarified with finality the long-held belief of the Church that Mary was conceived free from original sin. Mary was granted this extraordinary privilege because of Her unique role in history as the Mother of God. That is, she received the gift of salvation in Christ from the very moment of her conception.

Even though Mary is unique in all humanity for being born without sin, she is held up by the Church as a model for all humanity in Her holiness and Her purity in her willingness to accept the Plan of God for her.

Every person is called to recognize and respond to God’s call to their own vocation in order to carry out God’s plan for their life and fulfill the mission prepared for them since before the beginning of time. Mary’s “Let it be done to me according to Thy Word,” in response to the Angel Gabriel’s greeting, is the response required of all Christians to God’s Plan.

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a time to celebrate the great joy of God’s gift to humanity in Mary and to recognize with greater clarity the truth that each and every human being has been created by God to fulfill a particular mission that he and only he can fulfill.

“The word of the Lord came to me thus: "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations, I appointed you." (Jeremiah 1:5-6)

2024 ADVENT REFLECTIONS
Second Week

Once I was walking in the Australian bush in bright moonlight. As we crossed a stream, stepping carefully from one stone to another, I looked down and saw a tiny strange being looking up at me quizzically from the water. I was shocked but not frightened and stepped back to see it again. But it had gone and I realised (a bit sadly) that it was a trick of the light and my imagination.

The gods left humanity a long time ago. They were banished by science and faded away as we better understood our own unconscious. We can do better at this point of our evolution than trying to recover the old gods. Their disappearance perhaps left the world a duller place. But the new dispensation, the new covenant whose birth we are preparing to celebrate, expels the fears attached to the old order. It is a more free world, a grownup relationship with the divine. Here we learn to wait in joyful hope even in the absence, even in the void. We wait with an imagination empty of images, sensing the real presence that will manifest in everything, everywhere, always.

Humanity is permanently pregnant with this presence. An ordinary human pregnancy teaches the expectant parents that waiting does not equate to delay or postponement. It is preparation and maturing. It is true patience that teaches us that only through time time is conquered. So, there is no reason for impatience while a new form of life grows in whatever kind of womb.

While the mystery grows, ordinary life continues, with shopping, cooking, dealing with builders, talking with friends. But all the time the seed grows, how we do not know..’ (Mark 4:27). Waiting in fidelity to what is growing is the present moment.

When birth happens the wonder of completion is accompanied by the anxiety of caring for what is now here to be loved but still so vulnerable and delicate. New life is resilient and yet perilously tender. So birth is the end of preparation but the beginning of an endless series of stages of growth. ‘Epiktesis’ (Phil 3:13) is the Greek word for pushing ever forward. That is what defines a spiritual life, that there is no final goal except the transcendence of every goal as soon as it has been achieved. It may sound tiring but it is the secret of the infinite, boundless expansion of love. It is reflected in the practice of continuously returning to the mantra.

People who first come to meditation with a short-term, goal-oriented mind often speak of it as a ‘tool’. Those for whom it has become a way of life, a way into deeper life, think of it more as an on-going relationship, a love story. The poet Rilke wrote that ‘even between the closest people infinite distances exist. Aren’t lovers always coming to precipices in each other?’

Life and the Advent season reassure us that the marriage of infinity and intimacy is incarnation, full embodiment.

MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

Advent ‘clearing operations’
Question: How do say in Ilocano, “The road is nice?”
Answer: “Ok ngarud”
—————-
In today’s Gospel (Luke 3: 1-6), we hear about John the Baptist whose message was: “Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight His paths.” Are there things, people, or issues that slow down or block the road ahead of us in our journey to God’s heart?
—————-
Today, the second Sunday of Advent, we light the candle of PEACE. We cannot have true peace if we are not at peace with God, with people, and with ourselves. Advent is the time for cleaning up and clearing operations, and it all starts in our hearts.
—————-
Be at peace with God. A good confession is a beautiful gift to God and to oneself in this holy season of Advent. The best preparation is to have a good confession. May the Lord give us the grace to be honest, to be humble to God, and be reconciled with Him. God is good, loving, and merciful. No sin is too big nor too many for Him who loves us truly and dearly.
—————-
Be at peace with others. Advent is the time to reach out to others in peace and reconciliation. Let us humble ourselves to one another, break down the walls of hatred and indifference that divide us, and be united again. May we have no regrets in the end that we did not go the extra mile and refused to give the extra smile. Let us give God a chance to help us open our hearts to one another.
—————-
Be at peace with yourself. Advent is the time to really take a good look at ourselves, and look at how we are doing in our journey to God’s heart.
—————-
Let us ask ourselves: Am I closer to God now than last year? Is my relationship with God more real and more personal now? Am I a better person now? Am I more happy, more kind, more humble, more at peace?

“Prepare the ways of the Lord, make straight his paths. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight and the rough ways made smooth, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” (Luke 3:5) What needs to be straightened in your life? What “valley” in you needs to be filled up? What “mountains” and “hills” in you need to be made low? What “winding roads” need to be made straight? What in your flesh and mortal body needs to be saved?

The Lord tells us today what we need to be cleansed as a people: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

We need a lot of “clearing operations” in our country. People who have the power and authority, please don’t miss your God-given opportunity to really serve our people. Please remember that it is just a matter of time before you and I will be gone from this world. May we not hear from our Lord when we face Him in the end, the sad words, “You wasted your chance to love and serve me and others, just because you loved yourself too much.”

Who remembers now the names of big time leaders and politicians during the time of Jesus? Who remembers still Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate, Herod, and his brother Philip, Annas, and Caiaphas? Hardly anyone, or none at all. Such is the fate of powerful, vain, and selfish people who forget God and His people during their times of abundance, power, and fame.
—————-
People forget how much you are, how brilliant you are, how powerful you are, but people never forget how kind you are to them, and how you made them feel good about themselves.

As we honor our Mama Mary on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, let us be filled with the hope that we, sinners as we are, can also become like her in our own way by walking with her on the road of humility. Let us continue to be humble to our Lord and to one another. We still have so much to learn about true humility and true love.

Remembering Mama on her birthday, Dec. 8. One lesson that has helped me to have peace in my journey through life is her teaching about “merito.” She taught us to see problems, deprivations, sickness, and persecutions as opportunities to gain merit from God and that it is our merits that will help us to be blessed, and go to Heaven someday.

Dec. 12 is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Let us seek comfort and courage from her loving message: “I am here. I am your Mother. Do not fear. I am near.”

A moment with the Lord:
Lord, help us to be open and to be steadfast in whatever “clearing operations” we need as we journey on. Amen.
