This morning we drive across the floor of the Great Rift Valley. We arrive at Lake Nakuru National Park in time for a mid-morning game drive.
Enjoy lunch at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge as we get ready for our afternoon short game viewing drive.
Lake Nakuru is world famous also as a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos. Besides that,
more than 400 species of birds can be seen in the park. Between the lake and the cliffs in the west, large pythons inhabit the dense woodland, and can often be seen crossing the roads or dangling from trees.
Lake Nakuru is among Kenyaโs finest national parks. Flanked by rocky escarpments, pockets of acacia forest, and at least one waterfall, the park is gorgeous year-round and is home to both black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, hippos, and endangered Rothschild giraffes.
DAY 3: NAKURU -MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE
HOTEL: MARA SERENA SAFARI LODGE or similar
MEAL PLAN: Lunch & Dinner, Bed & Breakfast
After an early breakfast this morning, we drive into the Masai Mara game viewing en route to arrive in time for Lunch at the lodge.
After, unwind on your private verandah as you look out across the plains of the worldfamous Mara.
The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is widely considered one of Africaโs greatest reserves,
where the Maasai community co-exists in harmony with the local fauna. The coexistence of man and wildlife makes this one of the worldโs most unique wilderness regions. The Mara is home to a breathtaking array of life. The vast grasslands are teeming with herds of zebra, giraffe, gazelle, and topi. The acacia forests abound with
monkeys and birdlife.
Enjoy an afternoon game drive in this natural paradise, returning to the lodge for dinner, relaxing around the fire pit, and overnight.
DAY 4: THE MARA TRIANGLE
HOTEL: MARA SERENA SAFARI LODGE or similar
MEAL PLAN: Lunch & Dinner, Bed & Breakfast
Wake before dawn for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a Masai Mara sunrise. After a quick cup of coffee, you'll head out into the park to watch as the sun sets fire to the savannah and the big cats take advantage of the morning cool to search for a meal.
You'll then return to your lodge for a late breakfast before packing a picnic lunch and heading back out into the park for a day-long exploration of the Masai Mara.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a land of breathtaking vistas, abundant wildlife, and endless plains. The quintessential Maasai Mara safari delivers many attractions, as the reserve is home to an excellent year-round concentration of game, including the more than two million wildebeest, zebras, and other antelopes that make up the famous Great Migration.
Tonight as you go to rest, you will sleep to the music of Nature โ of lions roaring and hyenas laughing, a reminiscence of the might of wildlife.
Dinner and overnight at Mara Serena Safari lodge.
DAY 5: MARA NATIONAL RESERVE โ SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK
HOTEL: SERENGETI SERENA LODGE or similar
MEAL PLAN: Lunch & Dinner, Bed & Breakfast
After an early breakfast this morning, you will be transferred to the border town of Isebania where we make our way into Tanzania and the Serengeti National Park. Your driver will assist you with customs and immigration formalities. After a picnic lunch, you rejoin your vehicle and continue to the Serengeti and into Serengeti Serena Safari lodge. Enjoy game viewing en route and arrive in time for dinner at the lodge.
The Serengeti National Park, at 5,700 m2, is larger than the state of Connecticut. Protected since the 1940s, the area was made a national park in 1951 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fantastic in its natural beauty and unequaled in its scientific value, this vast expanse of land is home to more than four million different types of animals. Large herds of antelope of every description can be found here: Pattersonโs eland,
klipspringer, dik-dik, impala, zebra, gazelle, waterbuck, topi, kongoni, Cottonโs oribi, grey bush duiker, roan antelope, buffalo, and wildebeest. Storks, flamingoes, vultures, fish eagles, and ostrich are among the nearly five hundred species of birds that also call the Serengeti home.
Serengetiโs low vegetation means that game viewing is relatively easy. Small rivers, lakes, and swamps dot this magnificent landscape where animals roam in complete freedom. Vast herds of ungulates arrive from the Maasai Mara and begin to congregate in December, culminating in the calving of half a million wildebeest in early February. This southern portion of The Great Migration lasts from December until May when the
herds head out of the Serengeti and into the Mara once more.
DAY 6: WORLD OF TIMELESS NATURAL WONDER
HOTEL: SERENGETI SERENA SAFARI LODGE or similar
MEAL PLAN: Lunch & Dinner, Bed & Breakfast
We set out after an early breakfast amongst the splendor of an African sunrise for a full day of game viewing.
Negotiating the roads and tracks down from the lodge, you are transported into a world of a timeless natural wonder; one where the sights, sounds, and pageantry of life continue just as they have for thousands of years.
As the day progresses, your driverโs deep knowledge of the land becomes apparent as he leads you to one spot of outstanding beauty after the next, allowing you to observe the wildlife quietly and at your leisure. As the animals take refuge from the hot midday sun, we find a secluded spot to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch before pressing on.
You arrive back at the lodge at dusk, pleasantly tired after an exhilarating day. After a
well-deserved hot shower, you head to the main lodge for dinner. Take your afterdinner drink on your verandah if you wish, watching the wildlife grazing nearby. The atmosphere is remarkably peaceful as night falls, leaving you with dreams of this diverse and wonderful country.
DAY 7: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK โ NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA
HOTEL: NGORONGORO SERENA LODGE or similar
MEAL PLAN: Lunch & Dinner, Bed & Breakfast
Rise and shine! After breakfast, you will drive to the crater rim from where you will take on the steep and adventurous trail into the crater. We arrive at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge in time for a scenic lunch overlooking the crater.
Nestled high above the plains into the craterโs jagged rim, cloaked in river stone and indigenous vines, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is barely visible to the naked eye. Framed by arched stone passages and timbered decks, its torch-lit walls are adorned with stylized cave paintings. At the stone heart of the lodge burns a glowing fire, which is kept constantly alight. Dinner at the Lodge.
Ngorongoro Crater was an ancient active volcano whose cone collapsed some three million years ago, leaving a deep crater. It is the largest unbroken caldera in the world, the second-largest extinct crater, and today shelters arguably the most beautiful wildlife haven left on earth with a spectacular concentration of animals and stunning views. Known as โAfricaโs Garden of Edenโ, the crater is undoubtedly the best place in Tanzania to see black rhinos as well as the pride of lions with magnificent black-maned
males.
DAY 8: NFORONGORO CRATER TOUR
HOTEL: NGORONGORO SERENA LODGE or similar
MEAL PLAN: Lunch & Dinner, Bed & Breakfast
After breakfast, the driver guides your vehicle nearly 2,000 feet down into Ngorongoro Crater for a half day of exploration. In addition to viewing the larger game, we will drive across the dense forest on the rim to soda lake to view the outstanding birdlife.
Today, we enjoy a picnic lunch in the crater itself and ascend back to the lodge for
dinner and relaxation. The Ngorongoro Crater floor is wonderful because you can see
thousands of animals in a single visit.
Here, within a few square Kilometres, you can find all the animals that live in the East
African savannah. You will see a diversity of wildlife ranging from the โBig Fiveโ โ lion,
elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard โ to wildebeests, Grantโs and Thomsonโs gazelles,
and mountain reedbucks in the forests on the slopes.
The crater rim is wooded with mountain forest vegetation and is abloom with acres of pink, blue, and white lupines, candle-white lilies, and blue hyacinths. The short grasses on the craterโs floor make the game easy to spot and photograph.
Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro Serena Lodge.
DAY 9: NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA โ L. MANYARA NATIONAL PARK
HOTEL: LAKE MANYARA SERENA LODGE or similar
MEAL PLAN: Lunch & Dinner, Bed & Breakfast
This morning, you wake to your first Tanzanian sunrise. After breakfast, we drive to Lake Manyara National Park, viewing the game en-route to our lodge. We arrive at the park in time for a picnic lunch then set out for an afternoon game drive and hope to see the parkโs famous tree-climbing lions. A wealth of birdlife and large game roam the park and its lake, with the cliffs of the Great Rift Valley forming a stunning backdrop to it all. We shall head on to Lake Manyara Kilimamoja lodge arriving in time for dinner. The lodge is perched high above the lake with magnificent views from your room and
the grounds. Dinner and overnight at Lake Manyara Serena lodge.
The beautiful Lake Manyara covers two-thirds of this national park; the rest consists of steep mountainsides, swamps, dense woodlands, open grassy areas and hot springs. One of the many alkaline lakes of the Great Rift Valley, it was formed three million years ago and is quite shallow โ a perfect habitat for the 350 species of birds including pelicans, ibises, storks, Egyptian geese, and flamingoes. Baboons and black monkeys can be heard chattering in the woodlands near the parkโs entrance and a multitude of
large game can be found traversing the low, grassy areas near the lakeโs shore.
DAY 10: LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK - DEPART
Early morning game drives return to the Lodge for a full breakfast and check out. Later
followed by an onward transfer to Kilimanjaro international airport via Arusha for
Lunch.
Sadly, the adventure comes to an end but the memories are forever.
