GREAT SANTA CRUZ PINK ISLAND ADVENTURE
(ZAMBOANGA CITY)

Recognized by National Geographic as one of the 21 Best Beaches in the World in 2017.

What makes the beach pink is because of the crushed red corals known as organ pipe corals (Tubipora musica) that blend well with the sand making it look like color pink specially on broad daylight. If you walk along the beach, there’s a good chance that you’ll see these corals that are washed ashore. The waters surrounding the islands are protected area teeming with vivid marine life, an ideal site for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Taking a selfie on a vinta screams out “I’ve been to Zamboanga”. Colorful vintas docked on the shore of Great Sta. Cruz Island. You can ride the vinta or just watched the sailing vinta from the shore. Vinta is a traditional outrigger boat characterized by their colorful rectangular sails. They are predominantly used for fishing in Zamboanga, Basilan and other parts of Mindanao.

Zamboanga City is home to five indigenous cultural communities, the Subanen, the Sama Bangingi, the Kolibugan, the Bajau and the Iyyakan (yakan). These Indigenous Peoples supposedly have existed before the establishment of Zamboanga City and even the Philippine Republic.

Depending on the tide if it will be possible to make a side trip to the sandbar. This is a long stretch of pink sand in between the 2 Islands (Great and Small Sta. Cruz Island). In the sandbar you will see the breathtaking scenery of blue and green ocean water.

Before the end of the trip some members of the Sama Bangingi community performed a traditional dance of the Tausūg people called ‘Pangalay’, it is a social activity of the community. This dance is a great testament to the rich cultural diversity of the people in Mindanao.

There is no accommodation on the island and camping isn’t allowed. The trip starts at 7am and you leave the Island at 2pm. 400 tourist per day only. You can bring your own food or buy it in the Island (you just have to book ahead). They have a policy for garbage disposal-you bring home the garbage you have. No tours on Fridays and Mondays.

To get there, you'll have to take a motorized boat from Paseo del Mar. Travel time is about 15-20 minutes.

ONCE ISLAS ADVENTURE
(ZAMBOANGA CITY)

Most tourists associate Zamboanga City with Great Sta Cruz Island, famous for having a pink sand beach. But there’s a new eco-cultural tourism destination that you can check out in the area: Once Islas. It is a cluster of eleven mostly uninhabited islands and islets belong to the remote villages of Panubigan and Dita in Zamboanga City just recently opened to the public in July 2018. These unspoiled islands are ideal for low-impact activities like swimming, kayaking and trekking. These islands carrying capacity of 200 people is now strictly observed to ensure responsible and sustainable tourism development in the islands.

The Sama Banguingui community also does the tour guides and manage the community-based ecotourism site with support from the LGU, City Tourism Office and tourism agencies. The site aims to empower the community while respecting the indigenous peoples who live there. Only 4 Island tourists can dock and do activities these islands are Bisaya-Bisaya, Sirommon, Baung-Baung and Buh-Buh, with tourist-friendly facilities like beach cottages, trekking trails and designated kayaking and snorkeling sites. The other islands that make up the eleven include Sallangan, Simaddang, Lambang-Lambang, Baguias, Kabugan, Panganak, Lampinigan.

The first island to visit is Bisaya-Bisaya, where you can enjoy leisurely trek to the other side. This island has a very pretty beach on one side and interesting rock formations on the other side. Then you can cross by foot over to an adjoining islet where there is a small tidal lagoon that serves as a natural dipping pool. looks like a private whirlpool bath overlooking the sea. Second stop is Sirommon Island. the beachfronts of the island are decorated with the iconic Vinta sails that Zamboanga is known for. There are no structures just a few beach cottages. This is where lunch is serve; boodle fight style prepared by the Sama Banguingi tribal community. This island has a fine sand beach with a sandbar littered with starfish.

On the way to last 2 island stops you will visit the other islands but will not stop because this is where most of the Sama Banguingui tribe lives. They practice customs and traditions and do not mingle with tourist. The third stop is Buh-Buh island, where cultural tours are offered at its mosque and village. If you plan to visit, be aware of the local customs and practices and bring modest clothing or cover-ups to respect the community, as beachwear is inappropriate for visiting mosques. For last island Bauang-Bauang, a lovely island with powdery soft sand. This island has a hiking trail where visitors can get a panoramic view on top of a hill. You can swim and snorkel too. On all 4 island you can do kayaking, snorkeling, fishing and diving.
