Dumaguete City Tourism Office This is the official page of the Dumaguete City Tourism Office. IG: dumaguete.tourism No other city in the Philippines can claim to be the City of Gentle People.

This distinction belongs to Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental. With the mountain range called the Cuernos de Negros as her backdrop, the city faces a vast vista of sea, its length embraced by the famous Rizal Boulevard. Dumaguete City is the melting pot of all seekers of knowledge. It is the proud home of Silliman University, the first American Protestant school in Asia, the first St.

Paul College in the country, as well as Foundation University and Negros Oriental State University, the only state university in Negros Island. The city bustles with life and activity during the school year, but becomes tranquil and quiet during the summer. Dumaguete has also become a cosmopolitan city, offering vast and varied opportunities in education, business, commerce, and tourism. And yet it has amazingly retained its placid face without being complacent -- bustling without being hurried and noisy, keenly attuned with the present, looking forward to a bright future, but never losing her grasp of the past. To the world-weary, to tourists who have become blasé about fast, metropolitan cities, to retirees who long for quietude, and to those who merely seek for respite from the humdrum of everyday life, Dumaguete City indeed beckons.

Today, December 28, is the Feast of the Holy Innocents. On this day, the Catholic Church honors the first martyrs. These were the children of Israel killed by King Herod in his quest to find baby Jesus. This day is also known as Childermas. According to the Bible, Herod was afraid of the prophesied King of Jews and was angry that he hadn’t heard from the Magi who had come to him initially seeking a newborn king. Furious that Jesus had escaped, Herod ordered the killing of all baby boys under the age of two in Bethlehem and the surrounding areas, hoping to kill Jesus.

Today, December 27, is Fruitcake Day. It is a celebration of the favorite dessert associated with the holidays! Many historians believe that fruitcakes originated from Rome, over 2,000 years ago. One of the earliest recipes known lists pomegranate seeds, pine nuts, and raisins mixed into a barley mash. There are also records from the Middle Ages documenting that they added honey, spices, and preserved fruits into the original mix. Starting in the 16th century, sugar from the American Colonies along with the discovery that high concentrations of sugar could preserve fruits, ended up creating an enormous excess of candied fruits, thus resulting in making fruit cakes more affordable and popular in regions around the world. The fruitcakes that began in the Roman era are quite different from today, which can be iced, gluten-free, lactose-free, diabetic, alcoholic, or just a regular old fruitcake. Fruitcakes have an incredible shelf life! They can remain on the shelf for many, many years and still be edible and non-harmful to the human body. The reason that fruitcakes can remain edible for long periods of time is actually in the cooking methods. The fruits and nuts used are often dried and then soaked in a sugar substance, which means that they can remain on the shelf without adding preservatives. In addition to this method, some recipes also include alcohol, or involve an alcohol-soaked storage cloth during the baking process, removing harmful bacteria that decrease the shelf life. [REPOST]

Today, December 27, is International Day of Epidemic Preparedness. It is a United Nations-sanctioned day of action to remind the world of the urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems, reaching those who are vulnerable or in vulnerable situations. As exemplified by the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic major infectious diseases and epidemics have devastating impacts on human lives, wreaking havoc on long-term social and economic development. Global health crises threaten to overwhelm already overstretched health systems, disrupt global supply chains and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people, including women and children, and the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries. In the event of the absence of international attention, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and gravity. There is great need of raising awareness, the exchange of information, scientific knowledge and best practices, quality education, and advocacy programmes on epidemics at the local, national, regional and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics. It is important to strengthen epidemic prevention by applying lessons learned on epidemic management and how to prevent the stoppage of basic services, and to raise the level of preparedness in order to have the earliest and most adequate response to any epidemic that may arise, and recognizing also the value of an integrated One Health approach that fosters integration of human health, animal health and plant health, as well as environmental and other relevant sectors. International cooperation and multilateralism play an important role in the response to epidemics. We need to stress the significance of partnership and solidarity among every individual, community and State, and regional and international organizations, in all stages of epidemic management, as well as the importance of considering a gender perspective in this regard. Today, December 26, is the start of Kwanzaa, which lasts until January 1. It is an African American and pan-African seven-day cultural holiday that celebrates family and community. During the holiday, families celebrate with feasts, music, and dance, and end the holiday with a day dedicated to reflection and recommitment to the seven principles. The name Kwanzaa comes from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” meaning “first fruits” in Swahili. Swahili is considered a pan-African language, and also happens to be the most widely spoken language in Africa. Basing the language of the holiday in Swahili represents unity throughout the African and Black communities. The first-fruits celebrations are recorded in African history as far back as ancient Egypt and Nubia and appear in ancient and modern times in other classical African civilizations such as Ashantiland and Yorubaland. Kwanzaa developed as a flourishing branch of the African American life and struggle as a recreated and expanded ancient tradition. It draws from the cultures of various African people and is celebrated by millions of Africans and African Americans throughout the nation. Each family celebrates Kwanzaa in their own way, but celebrations often include song and dance, African drums, storytelling, poetry readings, and a large traditional meal. On each of the seven nights, the family gathers and a child lights one of the candles on the kinara, then one of the seven principles, called Nguzo Saba, is discussed. These principles are values of African culture which contribute to building and reinforcing community among African Americans. Heri Za Kwanzaa to our African American friends in Dumaguete! [REPOST]
