(62)

This distinction belongs to Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental. With the mountain range called the Cuernos de Negros as her backdrop, the city faces a vast vista of sea, its length embraced by the famous Rizal Boulevard. Dumaguete City is the melting pot of all seekers of knowledge. It is the proud home of Silliman University, the first American Protestant school in Asia, the first St.

Paul College in the country, as well as Foundation University and Negros Oriental State University, the only state university in Negros Island. The city bustles with life and activity during the school year, but becomes tranquil and quiet during the summer. Dumaguete has also become a cosmopolitan city, offering vast and varied opportunities in education, business, commerce, and tourism. And yet it has amazingly retained its placid face without being complacent -- bustling without being hurried and noisy, keenly attuned with the present, looking forward to a bright future, but never losing her grasp of the past. To the world-weary, to tourists who have become blasé about fast, metropolitan cities, to retirees who long for quietude, and to those who merely seek for respite from the humdrum of everyday life, Dumaguete City indeed beckons.

Today, September 11, is Hot Cross Bun Day. A hot cross bun is made from yeast dough and is usually a bit sweet. Some may even contain spices such as cinnamon along with raisins, currants, or other dried fruits. Many prefer having a hot cross bun for breakfast accompanied with a cup of coffee or a glass of warm milk and always with a generous dose of butter. Get your hot cross bun fix from Dudley's [ IG: ].

Today, September 10, is Swap Ideas Day. It is a celebration that encourages people to share a creative or helpful idea with someone and trade them for their thoughts in return. Swapping ideas today does not have to be done on a one-on-one basis. Often, groups of people with similar interests gather with a common goal in mind. The meetings are usually a social gathering. However, on occasion, groups with different skill sets, design talents, and ideas gather. They bounce sketches, eureka moments off each other, and suddenly a new idea develops. This observance urges sharing concepts and sparking ideas. Many of us are passionate about our careers, hobbies, or special projects. However, sometimes, we require the additional magic that happens when a community of people joins forces to bring a plan to fruition. Maybe it’s only a suggestion of an idea, but when it’s paired with another, a bigger and more tangible impression evolves. Swapping ideas does that. [REPOST]

Today, September 10, is World Su***de Prevention Day. Su***de is a growing problem and the numbers tell a shocking story: every 40 seconds, someone takes their own life according to the World Health Organization. That’s about 800,000 people worldwide every year—although some estimates put that number closer to 1 million. Su***de is the leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 29 and for every su***de that results in death, there are as many as 40 attempted su***des. Today, we aim to ensure those who need it that there’s a lot to live for. [REPOST]

Today, September 9, is Teddy Bear Day. It is a celebration to honor one of childhood’s favorite toys. We have all had a special cuddly teddy as a child. Some of us still have our teddy bear from our childhood. No matter what kind of teddy bear you had, the day is a perfect time to celebrate your childhood friend! In 1902, American President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub while hunting in Mississippi. The incident made national news. Clifford Berryman published a cartoon of the event in the Washington Post on 16 November 1902, and the caricature became an instant classic. This cartoon inspired the Teddy bear. It inspired New York store owner Morris Michtom to create a new toy and even had a name in mind. Michtom wrote President Roosevelt to ask permission to name the new toy a “Teddy Bear.” [REPOST]

Today, September 9 (9/9), is International Sudoku Day. Sudoku enthusiasts will no doubt notice the date’s symbolism. The goal of the Sudoku game is to fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, row, and 3×3 sub-grid contains all the digits from 1 to 9. So nine-nine is the natural choice for the day of celebration. It’s time to get your brain into gear because although today is most definitely a cause for celebration, some hardcore logical thinking will be required. [REPOST]
