19/04/2023

Laguna is a beautiful province located in the CALABARZON region in Luzon, Philippines. If you are coming from Manila, it will take you an hour and a half to reach the heart of the province (without the traffic). Because of the proximity, Laguna is known to be one of the best weekend getaway spots of people who would like to take a breather from the hustle and bustle of the metro.

If you must know, I am a proud ‘probinsyana’ from this amazing province. I grew up and studied in Laguna and back then, I didn’t realize that there were a lot of hidden gems in the province. I heard a few of it, but it was just recently that it made noise in the travel and tourism industry. As I did my research, I now know why it became one.

For those who want a list of what you can do in Laguna, I will share with you 15 incredible places you can find in the province.

1. Hidden Valley Springs in Calauan
2. Seven Lakes of San Pablo City
Recommended Hotels in San Pablo, Laguna
Sulyap Bed & Breakfast – Casa de Obando Boutique Hotel
Auravel Grande Hotel and Resort
3. Villa Escudero in San Pablo City
Recommended Hotels in San Pablo, Laguna
Tahanan Ni Aling Meding Hotel
Tierra de Oro Resort-Hotel
4. Pagsanjan Falls
Recommended Hotels in Pagsanjan, Laguna
Pagsanjan Falls Lodge and Summer Resort
Casa del Rio Resort
5. Underground Cemetery in Nagcarlan
6. Dalitiwan River in Majayjay
7. Costales Nature Farm in Majayjay
8. Makiling Botanic Gardens in Los Baños
Recommended Hotels in Los Baños, Laguna
Blue Hotel and Resort
Splash Oasis Resort & Hotel
9. Mt.Banahaw
Recommended Hotels Near Mt Banahaw
The Farm at San Benito
Graceland Estates & Country Club
10. Lake Caliraya in Lumban
Recommended Hotels in Lumban, Laguna
Caliraya Mountain Lake Resort
Lago Fishing Village Resort Hotel
11. Buruwisan Falls in Siniloan
12. Japanese Garden in Cavinti
13. Heritage Site in Pila
14. Shoes and Slippers Stores in Liliw
15. Century – Old Churches

1. Hidden Valley Springs in Calauan
A lot of people thought that Hidden Valley Springs is located in Alaminos, Laguna. However, this is just the entry point to this paradise. Its exact location is in a nearby town called, Calauan.

2. Seven Lakes of San Pablo City
This is where I grew up! Now I am feeling nostalgic. But I’m not here to tell you about my childhood days. Instead, I’m going to brag one of the things that San Pablo City is known for – 7 Lakes.

You got that right, this city has 7 Lakes namely, Bunot, Kalibato, Yambo and Pandin (also known as twin lakes), Palakpakin, Muhikap and Sampaloc. According to other people, these actually crater lakes formed after a volcanic eruption.

There are different activities which you can do in each lake. You can jog around, ride your bike or eat local street food. However, if you want to camp overnight and swim, Yambo Lake is becoming a popular spot for it. You can even ask the locals to cook the meals for you. The best part about it is that it’s very affordable. I would recommend this if you are working on a tight budget.

3. Villa Escudero in San Pablo City.
Villa Escudero also has the country’s first hydro – electric plant, Labasin Dam. However, in the recent years, more than half of the property was converted into an exclusive residential estate development.

4. Pagsanjan Falls
This is considered as one of the most famous falls in the country and located in the “Tourist Capital of Laguna”, Pagsanjan. To reach the falls, one would need to ride a boat and the ‘bangkeros’ or boatmen will happily serve as your tour guides. If you are up for a wet and thrilling adventure, then going to Pagsanjan falls is a must.

5. Underground Cemetery in Nagcarlan
Nagcarlan is a quiet town in Laguna where you can find the only Underground Cemetery in the country. This is already considered a national historical landmark. The cemetery was supervised by Fr. Vicente Velloc in 1845 as the resting place of the common residents. The underground was said to house only the remains of Spanish friars and other well – known people. During the Philippine Revolution, meetings were held here as well.

7. Costales Nature Farm in Majayjay
This is the first agrotourism destination in the Philippines and a great place if you want to learn more about organic farming. This is really timely considering that there are a lot of artificially grown foods available in the market. If you are going to visit here, don’t miss the delicious servings of salads!

8. Makiling Botanic Gardens in Los Baños
This is a tour which is recommended for those who are interested in flora and fauna. You can take great shots of flowers and you can even find rare plants and trees. Just take note that it would be best to visit in the morning so you can maximize your stay.

9. Mt. Banahaw
Mt. Banahaw is actually a volcano and has been one of the favorite trekking and hiking spots for thrill -seekers. For locals, it is considered a pilgrimage and they even call it ‘Holy Mountain’. Some even believe that there were a number of apparitions that happened in the area.

10. Lake Caliraya in Lumban
It is a man – made lake originally for the elite. But now, a lot of company outings and family reunions are held here. That doesn’t come as a surprise considering the location, the view and the facilities it offers. It is very quiet and can take your mind off the pollution you experience in Manila.

11. Buruwisan Falls in Siniloan
If you don’t mind long and winding roads, then get your bags and go to Buruwisan Falls. But before you can enjoy the waters, you need to trek Mt. Romelo. Actually, the tiring journey will be worth it once you reach your destination. It doesn’t matter if you are an amateur when it comes to climbing or trekking as the trail is quite easy. There are even stations where you can buy snacks to recharge.

12. Japanese Garden in Cavinti
History buffs should go to Japanese Garden in Cavinti as this was established as a remembrance of Japanese soldiers who died during the 2nd World War. Some folks say that the famous Yamash*ta treasure is hidden somewhere here.

13. Heritage Site in Pila

14. Shoes and Slippers Stores in Liliw
Get the most comfortable shoes and slippers in Liliw Laguna. The best part about this is that these footwear aren’t costly. In here you can also visit a small restaurant which has been one of the best to get Italian food, Arabela.

15. Century – Old Churches
During the holy week, Laguna can get pretty crowded. It is because it is one of the provinces most Catholics would like to have their Visita Iglesia. Who can blame them? The churches here are so stunning. Some of the favorites are the one in Magdalena, Liliw, Nagcarlan, Majayjay, Pila and Pakil.

I’m sure there are a lot more to see in Laguna and I’m quite certain you will be back in here sooner than you thought.

Philippine Airlines and Emirates announce interline partnership

Dubai, UAE, and Manila, Philippines: Philippine Airlines (PAL) and Emirates have signed an interline agreement to boost connectivity for passengers of both air carriers to new points on each other’s networks via Manila and Dubai, using a single ticket and a common baggage policy.

Now in effect, the reciprocal interline partnership will provide Emirates’ passengers access to 19 Philippine domestic destinations operated by Philippine Airlines, including Cotabato, Davao, Iloilo, Kalibo and more, as well as two (2) Asian regional points via Manila. Philippine Airlines’ passengers will benefit from access to Emirates’ global network and seamlessly connect to 21 cities operated by Emirates including Cairo, Frankfurt, Casablanca and London via Dubai.

Travel itineraries can be booked on philippineairlines.com, emirates.com, the Emirates and PAL mobile apps, and with travel agents as well as online travel agents (OTAs).

Bud Britanico, Philippine Airlines Vice President for Sales commented: “We are happy to embark on this new interline partnership with Emirates that expands the choices available to Philippine Airlines passengers, who now gain easier access to more destinations across Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa via our flights to Dubai. We are eager to expand our reach to various international markets and exciting destinations and help stimulate business and tourist travel for global citizens, as well as provide better service to our fellow Filipinos living and working in overseas nations.”

Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Chief Commercial Officer commented: “Philippines is one of our strongest consumer markets and we’re pleased to sign a new interline agreement with the country’s flag carrier. The partnership with Philippine Airlines will help open new links for trade and tourism that will drive more inbound traffic into the Philippines, and expand Emirates’ footprint in East Asia. We look forward to serving our partner airline’s customers with additional travel choices to Emirates destinations across the Middle East, Europe as well as the Americas, and to expanding our cooperation with plans to include additional points via Cebu in the coming months.”

Philippine Airlines, the Philippine flag carrier and full-service airline with the largest international network, first served Dubai on August 7, 1982 as part of a growing Middle East route network that now includes flights to Doha (Qatar) and to Riyadh and Dammam in Saudi Arabia. Currently, PAL operates daily flights between Manila and Dubai with Airbus A330 widebody aircraft offering Business Class and Economy Class service. PAL’s “Buong Pusong Alaga” (whole-hearted care) service philosophy is demonstrated in the gracious and uniquely caring Filipino service extended by the airline’s cabin crew and service teams around the world.

Philippine Airlines operates an extensive network of domestic routes to 32 destinations across the Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao regions of the Philippines, with major hubs in Manila and Cebu and an increasing number of flights out of Davao and Clark as well. In addition to the Middle East, PAL offers the only nonstop flights linking the Philippines with the West and East Coasts of the United States and Canada as well as Hawaii, and the most flights between the Philippines and multiple destinations in Japan and Australia.

Emirates first started operations in Manila in 1992, and has since expanded its network to include Cebu and Clark. The airline currently serves the Philippines with 25 weekly flights to the three gateways.

Emirates operates its modern Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in a three-class configuration on flights to Manila, and two-class configuration on flights to Cebu and Clark, offering 8 private suites in First Class, 42 lie flat seats in Business Class and 304 spacious seats in Economy Class. Travellers to and from the Philippines benefit from Emirates’ award-winning service and industry-leading products in the air and on the ground across all classes, with regionally-inspired dishes and complimentary beverages and the airline’s ice inflight entertainment system which offers up to 5,000 channels of on-demand entertainment in over 40 languages, including movies, TV shows, and an extensive musical library along with games, audio books and podcasts.

With the addition of its interline agreement with Philippine Airlines, Emirates takes its commercial partners up to 27 air carriers. These partnerships enable Emirates to respond with agility to the dynamic travel industry, meeting the ever-evolving air travel needs of its customer.

About Philippine Airlines

Philippine Airlines (PAL) is the Philippines’ flag carrier and only full-service network airline. PAL was the first commercial airline in Asia and will celebrate its 82nd anniversary in March 2023. PAL's fleet of Boeing 777, Airbus A350/A330/A320/A321, and De Havilland DHC-8-400 Next Generation aircraft operate out of hubs in Manila, Cebu, Clark and Davao to 32 destinations in the Philippines and 39 destinations in Asia, North America, Australia, and the Middle East. In addition to flying passengers on regular scheduled services, PAL also carries air cargo shipments and undertakes charter flights to boost Philippine tourism, support the economy and serve the travel needs of overseas Filipinos.

About Emirates

From its global hub in Dubai, Emirates serves customers on six continents, providing high quality air transport services that facilitate tourism and trade. The airline has earned customer recognition for its industry-leading services on the ground and in the sky, delivered by a passionate workforce representing over 160 nations. Emirates operates the world’s largest fleet of wide-body Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 aircraft, offering spacious cabins and iconic inflight features such as its A380 Shower Spa and Onboard Lounge, and its ice inflight entertainment system available in all seats across its fleet, which has topped “best in sky” awards for 14 consecutive years. Emirates is committed to environmentally-responsible operations and focusses on three areas: reducing emissions, consuming responsibly, and protecting wildlife and habitats. King Charles inherits not just the throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, but also her private fortune—without having to pay inheritance tax.

British monarchs are not required to reveal their private finances but according to the Sunday Times Rich List 2022, the queen was worth some £370 million (over P24 billion).

The queen's private wealth will be added to Charles' own, which has been estimated at some $100 million (over P5 billion). (📸: Stefan Rousseau and Victoria Jones / AFP)

Congratulations Cebu!

The Travel + Leisure Magazine, a New York City-based magazine with 4.8 million readers, named Cebu among the world's best islands for 2022 in its annual World's Best Award, published on July 12, 2022.

Along with the islands of Boracay and Palawan, Cebu made it to rank 16 on the list of World's Best Islands for 2022 by Travel+Leisure Magazine, with a score of 90.12.

"Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value," stated on the magazine.

Further, Department of Tourism (DOT) lauded the inclusion of the country's top tourist destinations in the magazine's publication. “The Philippines is truly blessed with the unrivaled beauty of our natural resources coupled by the warmth and endless talent of the Filipinos manifested in this citation of Travel + Leisure that included our Cebu, Palawan, and Boracay in their prestigious list,” expressed by Tourism Sec. Christina Frasco.

READ: Boracay, Palawan and Cebu hailed World's Best Islands; DOT celebrates back-to-back accolades for PHL destinations

The Department of Tourism (DOT) applauded the naming of the country's three island destinations among "The 25 Best Islands in the World" of the New York-based travel magazine Travel + Leisure (T+L).

Boracay Island featuring its postcard perfect sunset ranked 9th in the T+L World's Best Island list, followed by the Palawan at 11th with a photo of an idyllic lagoon in El Nido, and Cebu at 16th with Taoist Temple, in Cebu City. According to T+L, readers were asked to “weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.”

“The Philippines is truly blessed with the unrivaled beauty of our natural resources coupled by the warmth and endless talent of the Filipinos manifested in this citation of Travel + Leisure that included our Cebu, Palawan, and Boracay in their prestigious list,” Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco said.

Boracay and Palawan also topped T+L's 5 Best Islands in Asia alongside Phuket, Thailand, Bali, Indonesia, and The Maldives. “Travel + Leisure readers fondly recalled pre-COVID-era visits to the best islands in Asia. Now that the region is reopening, they're surely eager to return to these five ports of call, including the islands of the Maldives, as well as those found in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.”, stated T + L.

“We express our heartfelt gratitude and congratulations to all tourism stakeholders from the public and private sector, the national and local government units, the efforts of the previous administration included, and all the hardworking employees and officials of the Department across the country for forging forward amidst the challenges of the pandemic and contributing in their own ways so our country may earn the title as one of the most beautiful in the world. The natural beauty of a country can truly shine through when we are united in heralding our best qualities,” Frasco added.

Philippines among the 40 Most Beautiful Countries in the World
The Philippines concurrently was named among “The 40 Most Beautiful Countries in the World” by lifestyle travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler (CNT).

The country is accompanied in the list by other countries such as Brazil, France, Italy, Japan, and United States of America, among others.

Manila among top cities in the World
Meanwhile, TimeOut.com also ranked Manila among the top cities in the world. The ranking comes as a result of a survey among city-dwellers worldwide. The choice is a result of several criteria that include aspects like walkability, good public transport, safety, and sustainability other than a thriving nightlife, amazing food and drink, and art and culture. It should be noted, nonetheless, that Manila is usually in reference to Metro Manila or the Philippines’ National Capital Region.

“May this global recognition of the beauty of our natural resources inspire our efforts to raise the Philippines’ standing in the tourism industry by introducing tourism infrastructure development and improvements that would enhance connectivity and convenience in reaching our destinations,” enthused Secretary Frasco.
