In this amazing visual journey over the Northern Philippines, filmmakers Scott Sporleder and Maciej Pietruszka fly us across the villages of Bauko, Sadanga, and Buscalan.

The rice patties built on terraces over the steep mountainsides form an otherworldly terrain and have been at the center of agriculture for local people for centuries.

At somewhere around 100 years old, Whang-od is the last true tattoo artist in the Philippines. She still practices the ancient form of tattooing she first began at 15—tattooing warriors and indigenous women.

In this new Matador Original, we learn about the pilgrimages modern travelers make for Whang-od’s tattoos, and how a new form of sustainable tourism is emerging which helps preserve local culture.

Filipinas Nostalgia

The caption of the frontispiece to Worcester’s 1914 book reads:
“The Metamorphosis of a Bontoc Igorot. Two photographs of a Pit-a-pit, a Bontoc Igorot boy. The second was taken nine years after the first.”

The text explains that the man became a doctor. By including the contrasting images of a barefoot boy and a white-suited man as the first pictures in his book, Dean Worcester presented images as evidence of the achievements of the colonial project.

Lovely smile shared by Ifugao elders during our trip. They are indeed even more scenic than the Banaue Rice Terraces :)

One of the most treasured place in Sagada is the Lumiang Cave or what most of the locals called "Burial Cave" where the Igorot ancestors used to bury their dead family member using wooden coffins made mostly by Oak tree more than centuries ago.

The coffins are said to be carved by the elderly before they die. If an elderly person is too weak or ill to do so, his/her son, or a relative would do it for him/her. When the person dies, he/she is placed in the coffin in a foetal position. This is due to the belief that a person should exit the world in the same position that he/she entered it.

Josh and Sarah with Lakbay Norte team visited the best preserved Ibaloi Mummies of Timbac Cave. It is considered one of the most sacred caves of Cordillera where 19 mummies (atleast 400 years of age) put to rest. Some of the local tourists offer alcoholic drinks (gin) and coins put them into their beliefs that would give them a good fortune. Located about 1200 meters above Kabayan Benguet proper and approximately 84 kilometers away from Baguio City.

As our signs of respect with the local community and their tradition, we are not allowed to post mummies photos.

Margot and Sarah are so ready for 5.5 kilometers trek to Mt. Pinatubo but need an hour 4x4 jeep ride to get into the starting trail going to the crater.

He spent his growing up years in Benguet, Mt. Province and Baguio City amid ecological wonders like the Rice Terraces in Banaue and Batad and the caves of Sagada, that cool, captivating mountain town that has attracted adventurous tourists, domestic and foreign.

Bokong Falls is one of Sagada’s known cascades. Located within a cultivated area bordered with rice terraces and stands of pine trees, its a small waterfall with two surges of water. What it lacks in height, which drops to just around 20 feet, it makes up for its deep natural pool good for swimming.
