The Allen Coral Atlas met a major milestone by completing global habitat maps of the world’s tropical, shallow coral reefs. By combining satellite imagery, advanced analytics, and object-based analysis, global collaboration has resulted in maps that show the marine ecosystem's benthic and geomorphic data in unprecedented detail.

Through high resolution satellite images and new tools for analysis, an unprecedented view of coral reefs is being developed and updated regularly

Mama Ranger Diaries

Napoleon Wrasse

In May 2017 my colleagues at the Tubbataha Management Office (TMO), the rangers, volunteers, and scientists, did a population study of the Napoleon Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) in Tubbataha. We went to sites we’d never dived before to determine the presence or absence of the Napoleons.

Those dives were very long, because these fish are usually found along the reef crest, where the water is shallow. One site was only a meter deep and we had difficulty keeping our tanks underwater.

During that week-long survey, I saw stretches of coral so beautiful they made me cry. I did truly wonder if I deserved to see them. A Napoleon Wrasse more that one meter long looked me in the eye, and I felt we were kindred spirits, only in different forms, living beings trying to make sense of what we were seeing and why.

Witnessing such incomprehensible beauty is such a religious experience that fills one’s heart with joy and gratitude.

Despite everything that is wrong with this world, life is still truly beautiful!
