FIRE TRIANGLE

First, what is fire?
Fire is the rapid oxidation of a material (the fuel) in the exothermic chemical process of combustion, releasing heat, light, and various reaction products. At a certain point in the combustion reaction, called the ignition point, flames are produced. The flame is the visible portion of the fire.

WHAT IS THE FIRE TRIANGLE?
The fire triangle is a simple way of understanding the elements or ingredients of fire. The sides of the triangle represent the interdependent ingredients needed for fire: heat, fuel and oxygen. These must all work together, all-or-nothing, to make a fire.

HEAT
Heat is the first element of the fire triangle. It is the energy that raises the temperature of a fuel to its ignition point. A heat source is responsible for the initial ignition of fire, and is also needed to maintain a fire.

Heat sources can be from sparks, friction, electrical charges, the Sun, or chemical reactions.

FUEL
Any combustible material, solid, liquid, or gas, that can burn when exposed to heat and oxygen. The moisture content determines how easily the fuel will burn.

OXYGEN
Helps oxidize fuel molecules into smaller combustible compounds, releasing energy and heat. Air contains about 21 percent oxygen, and most fires require at least 16 percent oxygen content to burn. Oxygen supports the chemical processes that occur during fire. When fuel burns, it reacts with oxygen from the surrounding air, releasing heat and generating combustion products (gases, smoke, embers, etc.). This process is known as oxidation.

The fire triangle is also known as the "combustion triangle". If you add the fourth element, the "chemical reaction", you have a fire "tetrahedron" (a triangular based pyramid shape).

*
HOW TO EXTINGUISH A FIRE
To extinguish a fire, all you have to do is remove one or more elements of the fire triangle.

Heat
To reduce or totally remove heat, you can apply a cooling agent like water, powder, or a chemical retardant. For common fire, we usually use water.

Fuel
Fuel can be removed from the fire. Without fuel, a fire will stop.

Oxygen
Without sufficient oxygen, a fire cannot continue and will die. Oxygen can be denied to a fire using a fire extinguisher, a fire blanket or water. If the fire is small, covering it with a non-combustible material will suffice. In the outdoors, sand or dirt will do the trick.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WOODS, FOREST AND JUNGLE

Let's talk about the forest for a while since it is the most common name of the three.

Forests contain 80% of the Earth's plant biomass and they've been around for approximately 380 million years and are an important habitat for many species. .

ETYMOLOGY
The use of the word forest was first documented in the 13th Century and it came from the old French word β€œforΓͺt” for forest.

It is said that the word β€œforΓͺt” was introduced to the English language with the meaning of hunting land. At the time there was no definition as to whether this land had to have trees or woods on it. Naturally hunting land is mostly wooded as this is where game for hunting is best brought up, so over time the word became more associated with wooded hunting land.

The Latin word "foresta" was often used throughout Europe to describe the ruler's or king's hunting ground.

The exact origin of the word is obscure and there are many theories, but they all suggest that the word forest has been used throughout history to describe hunting ground and over time it has become integrated into the English language to mean the same as woods.

WHAT IS A FOREST?
Forest can be defined around the world in different ways, taking into consideration tree height, tree density, land use, legal standing and the ecological function. As well as these man-made rules, there are geographic factors that have influenced the names and creation of different types of forest, such as rain forests, tropical forests, boreal forests and temperate forests. Temperature and rainfall are two very important things that help a forest thrive and keep growing.

In the dictionary, forest is described as β€œa large area covered chiefly with trees and undergrowth”.

WHAT IS WOODS?
The dictionary definition states that woods or woodland is an area of land that is covered with growing trees but is smaller than a forest. It's kind of a vague definition. Size is subjective in comparison with the person's size and capability. A non-hiker may call even a small patch of trees a forest.

The word woods or woodland would have been the original word to use to describe a heavily dense tree area, but the exact definition has developed over time.

WHAT IS A JUNGLE?
A jungle is quite often defined as being very different to a forest or woodland, we think of it as being more exotic and tropical and that is partially true.

A jungle is an area of dense forest and overgrown tangled vegetation located within the tropics.

This definition explains that a jungle is made up of a network of forests and that will often have more plants growing on the ground.

An example of a misnaming is the Amazon Rainforest, when you look at the photos or videos of it you will realize it is actually a jungle because of its vastness. Jungles are networks of forests, therefore, this could be referred to as forests, but as a group mass would be called a jungle.

SO, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ALL THREE?

The defining element between the three ecosystems is size and climate.

Woods are considered to be the smallest area of dense tree growth, followed by forests, which make up bigger land areas and finally jungles, which are made up of overgrown tangled forests.

Also, jungles are located in tropical climates and are often more humid, whereas woods and forests are less humid and located all around the world.

So, what do you think we have in our protected areas, forests or jungles?

DON'T OVERPACK

Overpacking leads to physical stress of carrying all the weight, skill of stuffing all the gear inside your pack and having to bring some unusable items, to name a few.

Worse than overpacking is clipping items outside your pack. You may have seen some people, particularly newbies, strap stuff outside their pack like (number 1) sleeping bag, tent, or sleeping mat or pad. You may also see water containers (not trail water), drinking cups, sometimes cooking pans, first aid and other kits (should be in accessible pockets), knife or bolo, rope, camping chair and/or table, headgear, footwear, stuff toy, liquor or soft drinks, sound system, and many more.

Let's not single out the newbies. Even some old-timers do this. Maybe inspired by old western cowboy or outdoor movies where things are held dangling outside their packs.

What's in it for me? Nothing. It's their life, their rules. But, just in case you wanna know the unconscious reasons, here are a few:
- Inexperience. The person doesn't know what and how to plan. Experienced travelers know what to bring based on their travelling goal.
- Unorganized. The packer doesn't know how to pack well so he just puts everything anywhere in and out of his pack.
- Unconcerned citizen. This is usually seen in public places and transportation. Gear may hit you in the face in busy walking traffic. This is also observed in buses when these travelers walk the aisle of the bus and hit all the aisle-sitting passengers. I have also seen overly packed backpackers who when they physically turn around bumps another person to outer space. This may cause commotion and we don't want that.
- Doesn't know the art and science of packing. Yes, there is. If you know how to pack, you know where to put specific items in specific spaces of your pack.
- Unmindful of balance. Not having a balanced pack will affect walking balance. This is dangerous on very steep and narrow trails and crossing rivers or logs.
- Spatial. You know where you put your body when walking without having to think about it. But, not with a pack that has items that stick out. This will be troublesome when walking through heavily vegetated trails. It will hinder your progress, not to mention unsafe.
- Natural sounds. Listening to birds, insects, wind and trees is music to the ears. Until, the clanking sound of cooking pans distrurb the peace and quiet that you so deserve. Thanks to them, but no thanks.

Bottom line, keep all your gear inside your pack. It will be balanced, easier to carry, low profile, and safer for you and others as well
Be a packer, a masterpacker.
