The iconic red telephone box of the United Kingdom is a notable symbol of British culture and design. Known as the Kiosk No. 2 or K2, it was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1924. The creation of this telephone box was part of a competition in 1924 by the Royal Fine Art Commission to design a kiosk that would be acceptable to the London Metropolitan Boroughs which had consistently resisted the Post Office's effort to erect K1 kiosks on their streets.

The design features a prominent crown representing the British government and was initially made of cast iron, with a domed roof. The color red was chosen to make them easy to spot. Over the decades, several variations were introduced, such as the K6 (or Jubilee Kiosk) to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V, and these models were spread across the UK, becoming a common sight even in rural or remote areas.

Despite the decline in their practical use due to the rise of mobile phones, many red telephone boxes still stand throughout the United Kingdom. They have been repurposed for a variety of uses, such as housing defibrillators, mini-libraries, or art installations, symbolizing a quaint union of historical preservation and modern utility. Their presence even in isolated locations speaks to their original role as a vital point of communication for people in far-flung areas and has become an enduring image in British landscapes.
