On the way from Kalambaka to Delphi, is the statue of King Leonidas, who together with 300 Spartans & 700 Thespians fought the 100,000 strong Persians so the rest of the Greek army could retreat. Remembered as the Battle of Thermopylae, they became a Spartan legend.

Rumors allege that the kings of both sides exchanged brusque messages before the battle. Xerxes demanded of Leonidas to “Hand over your arms!” but Leonidas sent back a brief but famous comeback: “Molōn labe” (“Come and get ’em yourself!”). This has since become a classical expression of defiance.
