Cross-Sectoral Effort Promotes Cleaner Ecotourism Sites

The Sagada Tourism Office in collaboration with the Sagada tour guide organizations - EGAY, SAGGAS, SEGA, ASSETG and SETGO and tour guides from Barangay Balili, Bontoc joined forces for a clean-up effort, May 21, 2024. This initiative took place at several Ecotourism Sites including Marlboro Hills, Blue Soil, Kapay-aw Rice Terraces Viewpoint, Ticangan - Ebwa Falls, and the surrounding area of Sumaguing and Balangagan Cave.

After a productive day of cleaning up, the energy was high as everyone converged at Ginpeng, Suyo. The camaraderie continued as discussions of future collaborations took place. Challenges were also tackled and workable solutions emerged followed by a hearty meal- a perfect way to end a meaningful day.

It was inspiring to see everyone in action, working harmoniously towards a cleaner, greener environment. Let's continue to build these bridges and protect the places we love!

PRESERVING CULTURAL HERITAGE: "A Legacy in Tourism Sustainablity for the Future Generation"

The Sagada Tourism Office conducted conservation measures in some of the cultural heritage sites of Sagada. On April 23, 2024, measures were implemented to preserve the wooden coffins Echo Valley and Dokiw Hanging Coffins, followed by concerted efforts dedicated to the Lumiang Burial Cave on May 06, 2024. Wood preservatives were sprayed on the deteriorating wooden coffins in the three burial sites to arrest the process of decay and extend the longevity of the coffins.

The conservation efforts were undertaken to ensure that future generations will have the opportunity to see the cultural heritage of Sagada. This is only Phase 1 of the project since other burial sites will also be assessed and included in the preservation project of the Tourism Office together with volunteers from the different tourist guides associations. A dialogue was conducted with community elders, barangay captains of Patay, Demang, and Dagdag, the Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative (IPMR), and former Mayor Thomas Killip. The relatives of those in Echo Valley were also consulted before carrying out the preservation measures.
