Burials in Jars from , Cebu.

is a day of paying respects to the departed.

Your takes you back in time to remember how Cebuanos in the precolonial period laid the dead to rest through this dated to around 500 BCE to 500 CE that was recovered at San Remigio, north of Cebu.

Archaeological excavations around the San Juan Nepomuceno Parish Church and Lapyahan Beach in 2011 and 2012 hold evidence of early Cebuano burial practices about 2,500 to 1,500 years ago, a period referred to as the Metal Age. Archaeological finds reveal early cemeteries that displayed two distinct methods of burying the dead: in an open grave on the ground or inside earthenware jars. Remains placed in earthenware jars are called secondary burials, a custom where bones and teeth are transferred into containers a period after the initial burial process of laying the remains on the ground.

These finds also suggest that locals offered goods to the grave such as potteries, shells, and iron objects.
