As we celebrate September as Tourism Month, Eastern Visayas stands united under the theme "Tourism and Peace" as we invite travelers to explore the vital role that travel plays in fostering connections between cultures, nurturing mutual respect, and promoting a deeper sense of global citizenship.

With its breathtaking landscapes and rich culture, Eastern Visayas is a living testament to the power of peace. The MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for peace and freedom. From there, the San Juanico Bridge is another iconic structure that reminds us of the importance of building bridges—both literal and metaphorical—between communities. Trailing the path to Samar, the mat weaving in Saob Cave, Basey portrays the act of weaving itself as a peaceful, meditative process that brings communities together. Cuatro Islas offers a serene escape for those seeking tranquility and connection with nature. Moving south, Jalleca Hills provides a peaceful retreat that is ideal for travelers looking to reconnect with nature and find inner peace.

Birding in Leyte!

The Pied Triller (Lalage nigra)

A rare photo of a Pied Triller showing its nest and feeding its hungry nestlings at Campo Z, Capoocan, Leyte.

The Pied Triller is one of my favorite endemic birds. They are medium small, predominantly black and white birds, with some having brownish rear feathers.

A Guide to The Birds of The Philippines (Kennedy et al., 2000) cites these local names of this bird: Pari (Pilipino), Ibon-pare (Tagalog), Bugaungon or Salaksak (Visayan). I have no idea what it’s called in Waray; our farm caretaker does not know its local name.

It’s been awhile since I last saw this bird. This time I spotted one and its nest at the mangroves by the waterfront at our farm in Capoocan, Leyte.
