A Brief History of the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao-- Club No. 1294, District 17, Area 04. The Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao was chartered on June 8, 1990. Its charter membership was composed of 24 dedicated women leaders in different businesses and professions. Samia Abraham Henrage was the Charter President. This was organized by its mother club, the Zonta Club of Tuguegarao. In its 31 y

ears of service and counting , the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao has had seventeen (17) presidents as of todate. Members meet once, either physically or virtually during the pandemic, every month where they discuss their plans, current activities and bond with each other. In the past, the venue for the meetings was usually at any designated place in the City. Although this has already changed as the Club was officially appointed as the Manager of the GAD Center of Tuguegarao City on December 10, 2020. The GAD Center will serve as the Club's office, at the same time, a shelter for victims of gender-based violence. It is located at the City Hall grounds in Carig, Tuguegarao City particularly at the Tuguegarao City Senior Citizens Building and manned by two personnel. For now, the Center is open from Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Membership: Club membership averages 22; there was a time when membership reached 37 with a low of 17. Presently there are 59 paid-up members (2020-2022) and five new members due for registration. This will make the Club 64-strong. Orientation of new members is regularly held. Fellowships are also done in the the monthly membership meetings, either face to face or virtually or both. Membership is being strengthened through meetings, annual parties, during induction/installation ceremonies and field trips/out-of-town activities while attending seminars or officials activities of the Club. After the pandemic, the members hope to have a team building to cement the friendships that have been formed. ZONTA TODAY

You may have been hearing a lot about our club, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao, which is one of the two clubs here in this City. Our club is a member of the Zonta International, a global community of more than 29,000 women and men in nearly 1,200 Zonta clubs in 63 countries. In the Philippines, there are 51 active clubs and counting with 1,800 members. Zonta International has provided resources to empower women and girls and expand their access to education, health care, economic opportunities and safe living conditions. Zontians believe in making the world a better place by empowering women and finding joy in working together toward gender equity in a supportive community of like-minded professionals that extends to other countries and cultures. Zonta advocates to end violence against women and girls. Every year from November 25 through December 10, Zonta clubs around the world participate in Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women, our international campaign to raise awareness of and increase actions to end violence against women and girls. Zonta empowers women in the workplace by providing educational scholarships to promote women in traditionally male-dominated fields. At the local level, Zonta clubs are making a difference. We identify the most urgent issues affecting women and girls in their communities and develop service and advocacy projects to address these challenges. The issues and solutions vary, as each is tailored to local needs. Under the new normal, the Club can be the link to the future because our tagline for this biennium 2020-2022 is The Link to the Future is NOW…Embrace the New Normal with Optimism for Women, and our theme is “Transitions, Changes and New Opportunities” which is very appropriate because all our programs and/or projects to be carried out should address efforts to "Recover" from the effects of the global crisis, and provide assistance to "Rebuild and Rehabilitate" the community. Since the start of the new biennium this June, we have embarked on activities that would address these needs such as the Gadget Mo, Sagot Ko project which aims to help young girls who belong to indigent families stay in school and pursue their online schooling. As of todate, we have distributed more than 100 gadgets to poor young girls and boys. As we posted in this page, this is one of the biggest “passion” projects that we have because the activity touched us to our very core as we experienced and witnessed their living conditions. One belonged to a family who was a victim of robbery, another has a blind mom, or whose parents lost their jobs during the pandemic, and one lives deep in the forests or in remote fields, or in urban poor areas or slums. Despite all the odds that we encounter during the planning and distribution, we carry on because we know that we make a difference in the lives of these young people. We also have the Knit and Crochet Project which aims to empower unemployed women by providing them a source of livelihood, generate income for the family and maintain their self-worth and self-esteem. We have partnered with several groups of women to produce beautiful crocheted products like face masks, sanitizer and alcohol holders, table runners, coasters, place mats and the latest, which became a hit, are the beautifully created dangling and hoops. The Club has earned a lot from the sales proceeds of these products. As our contribution in the prevention of the spread of the corona virus, we distributed masks, posters and flyers that disseminate information on how to fight the COVID 19 crisis. We have also helped in the alleviation of poverty by replenishing the community pantries in several adopted barangays. And this time, taking advantage of the benefits of internet connectivity, we launched this talk show, ALL ABOUT EVE, to help empower, educate and inspire women and girls about their relevance and importance in the community. This talk show will be one of the means to reach out to the people specially women and girls and listen to them. We make our Club more accessible if not physically then through the internet. We have revitalized our page which is open to the public and where we entertain comments, questions, or requests for assistance. You can easily search this Page on Facebook. Meanwhile, we now have our own physical office because we have been appointed as the Manager of the GAD Center of Tuguegarao City which is located at the city hall grounds in Carig. Any client of the club can meet us there and seek for our assistance. There are so many things to do and we have laid out so many plans for the biennium we are thankful to our partner organizations and agencies, families and friends who have been very supportive of our endeavours. Of course, these would not all be possible without the members’ active support and participation and of course, our God to whom we offer all the glory. Updated by: RACQUEL C. REYES-AGLAUA, President, 2020-2022 Biennium

Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao and CSU Andrews GOLDS team up for Women’s Health and Hygiene Awareness

In celebration of Women’s Month, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao and Cagayan State University - Andrews Campus Guild of Limitless and Driven Science Scholars (GOLDS) partnered to promote women’s health, empowerment, and menstrual hygiene awareness. This initiative aligns with the shared commitment of both organizations to building a better world for women and girls through education, advocacy, and direct support.

As part of the “ISKOmmunity PADtry” campaign, the collaboration aimed to address reproductive health challenges faced by young women, particularly in underserved communities. Dr. Mildred Ferrer Banatao led an educational session on reproductive health, family planning, and the consequences of early teenage pregnancy. The discussion emphasized the importance of comprehensive s*x education, access to contraception, and maternal care in safeguarding young women’s futures.

The initiative also tackled teenage pregnancy—a persistent issue in the Philippines—by addressing its biological, social, and cultural causes. Speakers underscored the need for empowered decision-making, reproductive rights, and access to healthcare and education to ensure that young girls can pursue their aspirations without barriers.

Beyond education, the project provided direct support to young women through a menstrual hygiene drive. ZCCT donated 134 hygiene kits, including toothbrushes from Pharmacare, which were distributed to 298 students from Grades 9 to 12 at Don Severino Pagalilauan High School in Callao, Peñablanca. Participants were also trained on proper menstrual hygiene management, including the correct use and disposal of sanitary pads to prevent infections and promote well-being.

This partnership between CSU Andrews GOLDS and the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao highlights the power of collective action in uplifting women and advancing gender equality. By combining education, advocacy, and direct aid, the initiative empowers young women with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to take control of their health and future.

As Women’s Month serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for women’s rights and empowerment, this campaign stands as a call to action for the community to continue fostering an environment where women’s health, dignity, and opportunities are prioritized—because a better world for women and girls is a better world for all.

Today, March 15, 2025, marked another milestone for the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao (ZCCT) as it exceeded its target of planting 13,000 trees at the Club’s five-hectare Zonta Garden and Forest located at the MTWD Watershed in San Roque, Peñablanca.

According to ZCCT Environment Chair Cheyenne Tang, the Club members, with the support of partners from the Tuguegarao City Cagayan Dental Chapter and the Tuguegarao City Moog ng Agila Club, were able to plant a total of 1,200 varieties of seedlings such as duhat, fringon, tindalo, and ipil today.

As of January 2025, a total of 12,993 seedlings had already been planted in the area since 2021, bringing the Club close to its 13,000-tree target under the Memorandum of Agreement signed between ZCCT and MTWD officials in 2021. The agreement entrusted ZCCT with the maintenance, development, and protection of the identified five-hectare site.

This initiative also forms part of ZCCT’s active support for the celebration of World Water Day, emphasizing the crucial link between healthy forests and sustainable water resources. By rehabilitating the watershed and increasing tree cover, ZCCT contributes to protecting water quality, replenishing groundwater, and ensuring climate resilience—key messages echoed in this year’s World Water Day observance.

“As of today, a total of 14,193 seedlings have been planted in the area. However, we will not stop here and we will continue to conduct tree-growing activities in the coming days and months,” Committee Chair Tang said.

She also shared that the Club, through its Environment Committee, is planning to plant an additional 5,000 trees in the area within this biennium.

Based on the recent report from MTWD’s Environment and Resource Division, at least 80-85% of the total planted seedlings have survived.

Earlier, MTWD installed a water system in the area to help maintain the seedlings and ensure tree growth, especially during the dry season, in order to achieve a survival rate of at least 80%.

Also, based on MTWD’s observation, ZCCT remains the most active and consistent organization among all its partners in conducting tree-planting activities in the watershed area, a testament to the Club’s commitment to environmental preservation and sustainability.

Meanwhile, ZCCT extends its gratitude to all the partner agencies, schools, organizations, and private business enterprises who have shared their time and energy in support of the numerous tree-growing activities conducted by the Club over the years.

In celebration of Women’s Month, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao (ZCCT), in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Enrile, conducted an Orientation on VAWC and the Safe Spaces Act (Bawal Bastos Law) for the town’s 44 Barangay VAW Desk Officers and Secretaries.

According to ZCCT President Josefina Sedano, the activity is a vital step toward strengthening grassroots efforts to protect women’s rights and create safer communities for all.

Among the highlights of the orientation was the discussion on VAWC and Republic Act 9262, led by Past Area Director Atty. Mila Lauigan, who emphasized that when women are informed of their rights, they become more empowered to fight abuse—not just for themselves, but for others as well.

Atty. Lauigan also tackled the VAWC Referral System and Proper Documentation, stressing that barangay frontliners are the first responders, and that accurate documentation is essential in helping survivors achieve justice.

Meanwhile, ZCCT Vice President Atty. Milagros Mitoy Cayosa discussed Protection Orders and Legal Remedies, highlighting that legal mechanisms exist to shield victims—and it is crucial that these remedies reach the people who need them most.

The Safe Spaces Act (RA 11313) was explained by Zontian Atty. Cecilia Lazaro, who emphasized that everyone deserves to feel safe in public spaces, adding that respect is not optional—it is the law.

The activity also featured an interactive role-playing session, where participants acted out real-life scenarios. This hands-on approach helped enhance their readiness and confidence in responding to harassment and VAWC-related cases in their respective barangays.

The event was facilitated by Zontians Amalia Decena and Sugar Macarilay.

In her closing message, Municipal Administrator Marife Guzman Toledo reaffirmed LGU Enrile’s commitment, stating that when we invest in awareness and capacity-building, we take one step closer to a violence-free and inclusive society.

On March 11, 2025, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao (ZCCT), led by President Josefina Sedano and Service Committee Chair Raquel Arnedo, conducted a site visit to the Agta Community in Sitio Nasiping, Fugu, Ballesteros, Cagayan.

The primary purpose of the visit was to inspect the proposed site for the construction of a common comfort room intended to benefit the Agta families residing in the area.

Prior to the inspection, the team paid a courtesy call on the barangay officials to formally coordinate the proposed project and ensure community support.

During the ocular inspection, the team discovered that the Agta Community, home to approximately 52 families, faces an urgent need for a safe and sustainable water source.

Moved by the situation, the team immediately initiated coordination with local officials and expressed the Club’s willingness to fund the digging of a water source to address this pressing concern.

The ZCCT team committed to return to the community to fulfill this vital project and help the families gain access to secure and safe potable water for their daily use.

This initiative is part of ZCCT’s continuing commitment to uplifting marginalized communities and ensuring access to basic needs, especially among indigenous groups in the region.

Atty. Maria Milagros N. Fernan-Cayosa, Vice President and Advocacy Committee Chair of the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao, took center stage during the launch of the 2025 National Women’s Month Celebration at the Tuguegarao Component City Police Station (TCCPS) on March 3, delivering a compelling message on gender equality and the need for an inclusive society.

As the guest speaker, Atty. Fernan-Cayosa underscored the significance of this year’s theme, “WE (Women Empowerment) for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society,” which will guide the campaign until 2028.

She also expounded on the sub-theme, “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas,” emphasizing that the nation’s progress is tied to the empowerment of women across all sectors.

In her address, Atty. Fernan-Cayosa explained that gender equality is not about diminishing the rights of men but about ensuring that all individuals—regardless of gender, age, or background—have equal opportunities and rights. “True gender equality uplifts everyone by recognizing and protecting the rights of all, including women and gender-diverse individuals,” she stated.

She further defined an inclusive society as one that “overrides differences of race, gender, class, and geography,” fostering equal opportunities and safeguarding human rights. She encouraged attendees to reflect on their role in promoting gender equality, stressing that women’s empowerment is integral to national development.

Beyond her keynote speech, Atty. Fernan-Cayosa led an in-depth discussion on the Magna Carta of Women, highlighting its provisions and implications for law enforcement and the broader community. This session aimed to deepen understanding of legal frameworks that protect women’s rights and promote gender-responsive governance.

With law enforcement agencies actively participating in the National Women’s Month Celebration, Atty. Fernan-Cayosa’s message serves as a powerful call to action—urging institutions and individuals alike to champion gender equality and work toward a truly inclusive society.

Another club in Area 4 will soon be born - the Zonta Club of Northern Cagayan and Apayao (ZCNCA)!

The Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao (ZCCT) pursued the creation of another club in Area 4 and met with the core group of potential members yesterday, February 28, 2025 in Abulug, Cagayan.

This event- called the Sponsoring, Organizing and Mentoring (SOMing) activity of the ZCCT was led by Country Club Creator Mila Lauigan, assisted by ZCCT President Josie Sedano and Past President Connie Reyes. Area 4 Director Racquel Reyes-Aglaua likewise came to support and provide guidance in the creation of the club.

Around 15 potential members composed of empowered women from several sectors like legal, medical, dental, government, business and academe showed their fervent interest and commitment to create a Zonta Club in their area. An interim set of officers was also elected, tasked, among others, to recruit more members and plan specific activities in preparation for the formal chartering.

Initially, the club’s proposed name was the Zonta Club of Apayao but since most of the potential members also come from the northern part of Cagayan, they proposed the name ZC of Northern Cagayan and Apayao.

So, since the authority to charter was already issued by Zonta International, it is hoped that the baby club will be fully activated within the first semester of this year.

Watch out for more activities in relation to this project! If you’re in the area and interested to join this baby club, let us know!

Out-of-town planning activities also provide opportunities for members to bond. Service Projects: 1. Livelihood programs to equip women with appropriate skills in order to help them become economically self-sufficient. Training programs were offered on sewing, quilting, food preparation, fruit preservation, Christmas décor-making. 2. On women’s health, the club undertook the following: a. Conducted feeding program at the wards of the Regional Mental Hospital, in depressed barangays, and at the different public schools; b. Distributed hygiene kits to the women patients of the OB Ward at DSWD Regional Haven for women. c. Dentist-members of the Club conducted lectures on proper oral & dental care for the Preschool children, along with their mothers and guardians. Free dental kits were also distributed, and the proper way of brushing their teeth was demonstrated. 3. Campaign Against Domestic Violence Some of our programs were done in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare & Development. DSWD specialists lectured to the members on Domestic Violence in our community in order to heighten their awareness on the subject. In response to the campaign against family violence launched by the Government through DSWD, the Club, in August 2000, signed a resolution condemning all forms of violence against women & children in support of the National Family Violence Prevention Program of the DSWD. The Club also promoted the establishment of a help desk for women victims of violence, distributed and displayed in all barangay halls the emergency numbers women victims of violence can call. The Club, through its lawyer members, conducted several lectures on Republic Act. 9262 (Violence against women & their children law) in government agencies, schools and universities, among barangay officials, and others not only in the city but also in the entire province and even in nearby provinces. Legal assistance was also extended to women victims of violence. Signature campaigns were also launched to increase awareness on Zonta’s mission to eliminate violence against women and children. 4. Literacy, Education & Advancement of Women: Given women’s limited access to education and information, and scarcity of financial resources, a holistic & coordinated approach was adopted to improve women’s health, nutrition, their social wellbeing, and raising of their self-esteem. A series of lectures was undertaken on the welfare of women & children. A briefing was conducted on proper health management & prevention of common illness and tropical diseases prevalent in the Philippines such as dengue etc. Preventive measures with the proper medical remedies were also discussed. Social & Family Welfare & Responsible parenthood were also part of the lecture. 5. Partnership with the DSWD Regional Haven For Women: Through the years, the Zonta Club of Central Tuguegarao has worked as a distinguished partner of the Department of Social Welfare & Development-Regional Haven for Women. It sustained its commitment to share love & time with the residents who are victims of r**e, in**st, physical abuse, molestation, abandonment, who are in dire need of psychological & social support. The Club takes active part in the processing of the residents by holding regular confidence-building activities, socialization and interaction. It also provides health programs utilizing its medical doctors and dentist-members by giving them medical & dental services. We also distribute toiletries, beauty & hygiene materials. Through our constant presence & interaction, we obtain first-hand information on the actual experiences of women victims. Zontians provide the moral support and a shoulder to cry on and in the process acquire in-depth understanding of the problems usually encountered by women victims at the hand of their partners. By holding regular confidence-building activities with them, we encourage them to become productive citizens. Advocacy: The Club regularly sponsors several symposia on women’s rights. We also never miss celebrating International Women’s month yearly in cooperation with other government and non-government agencies. The Club also regularly sponsors lectures & symposia on Anti- violence against women and children, gender sensitivity programs for college students in various universities in the city, for high school teachers in different schools, parents in the different barangays, in the course of doing service projects for women and children, like medical & dental missions. The Club has printed and posted stickers & tarpaulins, and produced bookmarks promoting women’s and children’s rights. Stickers were distributed to motor vehicles during the celebration of Zonta International Day and other significant days of Zonta. We also go on radio interviews and local TV cables to promote our advocacies. Club Initiatives For three years in a row, the club has launched a search for ordinary women with extra- ordinary achievements to give honor and recognition to these women in especially difficult circumstances like single mothers, victims of violence survivors, and those who have overcome their difficult situations and emerged even more successful and empowered. These women are recognized so other women can draw inspiration from their sheer strength and determination. Apart from the recognition for the outstanding women, cash prizes were given to them to start small businesses to help support their families. Gift giving has always been among the various activities of the club. Fundraising The Cub raises funds to support its service projects through sale of raffle draw tickets, jewelry auction, fashion show etc. District & Area Activities The club has been actively participating in all Area or District activities. Officers and Board of Directors always attend & participate in the Officers Training Program conducted by the District. It has already hosted Area meetings and is slated to be in charge again in the forthcoming area meeting in May 2014. One member, Susan Carag, has been an Area Director while another member, Mila Lauigan, has been a District Committee Chair on Legislative Awareness and Advocacy. She is also the incoming area Director of Area 4. International Activities Club officers usually attend International Conventions. Five members have already registered to attend the forthcoming International Convention at Orlando, Florida.
