Long before it was known as the Happy Island, Catanduanes was once called as Isla de Cobos.

In 1573, during Spain’s early expeditions in the Philippines, a group of Spanish conquistadors led by Juan de Salcedo landed on the island while pursuing pirates along the coastal villages of Southern Luzon. There, they encountered native settlers living in thatched huts called cobo. Inspired by this, the Spaniards named the island "𝑰𝒔𝒍𝒂 𝒅𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒃𝒐𝒔"—the first recorded name of Catanduanes.
