Ruksana - WASH Dadu WASH(ing) Up: Huge Pride in Simple Things
Because of the monster in our village we dont let our friends from town stay for a night over.
A shocking and scary revelation Ruksana unfolded on us. School girls of the dusty village of Charo, in the district Daadu of Sindh province, told us the monster only haunts girls and women. Less than 200 feet was the dungeon, surrounded by bushes and a few small trees, the monster’s house.
Before the catastrophic floods of 2022 inundated their homes and fields, Ruksana’s life was hard from the issue of basic hygiene: the daily toilet.
Washing areas and toilets for women was a joke, we have friends and relatives in the city, but out of shame we couldn't invite them, where will we take the ladies for the toilet.
The Oxfam WASH Project with these simple constructions allowed the women a relief from an enormous physical and psychological burden. Ruksana is in a position to lead other women and change other things in the village too.

The idea to push water 1,500 feet across the barren land dropped on Abdullah while sitting under a tree, pretty much like Newton’s story. There is a technical logic here, with a small solar powered pump pushing water is rather possible, than pulling it especially beyond 1000 feet. Using this rationale, LHDP built the portable solar water pump, it has low maintenance and greater application, as it can be carried easily to any water source.
In the socio-economic development process we have seen time and again, locally crafted solutions with greater degree of modification using locally available resources are not only practical but sustainable. With some R and D, businesses particularly the startups can capitalise on such opportunities and bring innovative simpler solutions to market.

My CNIC is my Identity.
Coming from village Kamaal deen in a remote area of the district Daadoo, her husband and in-laws were putting off her request for a National Identity Card for a long-time. She wanted to study further and also get herself enrolled in the Government Financial Support Program.
My ID card is my first Identity, with this card I have the power to vote, apply for government financial support programs, perform omrah and travel around.
Reshma's journey highlights the challenges many women in conservative rural communities face, when it comes to obtaining basic documentation like an identity card. The government should regularly carry-out awareness campaigns to ensure no one is left behind.
