Today marks the 70th anniversary of the first ascent of Nanga Parbat (8126 m), the ninth-highest mountain in the world. The German-Austrian team made the first ascent on July 3, 1953, and Hermann Buhl was the only summiteer from the team. With the extreme vertical relief over the surrounding terrain and the fact that 31 people had died climbing it before reaching the first summit. Nanga Parbat (literally, Naked Mountain) is the ninth-highest mountain in the world at 8,126 meters (26,660 feet) above sea level. It is the western anchor of the Himalayas, around which the Indus River skirts into the plains of Pakistan. It is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan and is locally known as 'Deo Mir' ('mir' meaning 'mountain'). Nanga Parbat is one of the eight thousand peaks, with a summit elevation of 8,126 meters (26,660 feet). An immense, dramatic peak rising far above its surrounding terrain, Nanga Parbat is also notoriously difficult to climb.

Nanga Parbat Mountaineering History began in 1895, when a British expedition led by A. F. Mummery attempted to find a way up the southern and western slopes. An avalanche hit the group, and they vanished. These were the first casualties on the Nanga Parbat. Hermann Buhl, a participant in an Austro-German expedition under the direction of K. M. Herligkoffer, succeeded in ascending the main peak of Nanga Parbat Massive on July 3, 1953. Nanga Parbat was first climbed, via the Rakhiot Flank (East Ridge), on July 3, 1953, by Austrian climber Hermann Buhl, a member of a German-Austrian team. Karl Herrligkoffer from Munich, W***y Merkl's half-brother, organized the expedition, and Peter Aschenbrenner from Innsbruck, who had participated in the 1932 and 1934 attempts, served as the expedition leader.

It was Hermann Buhl who, after 41 hours of solo climbing, conquered this peak, making his name in the history of mountaineering. Hermann Buhl made the dramatic first ascent of Nanga Parbat, continuing alone for the final 1,300 meters after his companions turned around. He arrived at the base camp in the late afternoon after spending 41 hours on the mountain. After the successful summit of Nanga Parbat, Hermann Buhl became the first person to solo an 8000-meter peak, and the ascent was completed without the use of additional oxygen.

Gandhara is the ancient name of a region in northwest Pakistan in the Hindu Kush mountain range and to the north by the foothills of the Himalayas. In 330 B.C., Alexander the Great conquered this region and, together with the Indo-Greek kings that succeeded him, introduced classical traditions that became an important part of Gandhara’s artistic vocabulary over the next seven centuries. Gandharan control of the high mountain passes resulting cosmopolitan elites became some of the most powerful Buddhist patrons in all of South Asia.

Taxila is an archaeological site containing the ruins of the Gandhâran city of Takshashila, an important Vedic/Hindu and Buddhist centre of learning from the 6th century BCE to the 5th century CE.

Historically, Taxila lay at the crossroads of three major trade routes: the royal highway from Pâṭaliputra; the north-western route through Bactria, Kâpiúa, and Puṣkalâvatî (Peshawar); and the route from Kashmir and Central Asia, via Úrinigar, Mânsehrâ, and the Haripur valley across the Khunjerab pass to the Silk Road.

Railways have been an inextricable feature of Pakistan’s cultural, economic and geographic landscapes. They were instrumental in its development, propelling it from a newborn nation to an important centre for trade, transport and communication. Some railway stations have faded into obscurity over time, while others still stand — and are on track — today. One of the oldest surviving stations in the country is the Golra Railway Station.

Located on the outskirts of Islamabad (near the sector F-13), the Golra Sharif Railway Station is a junction station in the Rawalpindi Division of the Pakistan Railways (the main line that connects Peshawar and Karachi). What makes it especially unique is the collection of railroad memorabilia carefully preserved and exhibited in a museum located right on the premises. It houses an assortment of relics related to railways dating back to the days of the British Raj. Visitors can study and learn about the different artefacts that illustrate different points in history and provide a whimsical narrative of a once-dominant industry and the world it left behind.
