The First Organic Village of Skardu -
Nangsoq

There is a very serene and peaceful place in Skardu that many people do not know about known as the Nangsoq village. This is the first settlement of this area that was purposefully developed as an organic village in order to promote this healthy lifestyle.

Trek to this beautiful village starts from the neighborhood near Kharpocho fort. It is a beginner level trek of around 3 kilometers that takes you on a scenic route along the Indus river with some spectacular views of the valley. It takes around an hour to reach the village by walking on a gradually inclining path. You also come across a few wooden bridges along the way.
A wooden signboard greets you as you reach your destination – Welcome to the first organic village.
You can only travel to Nangsoq on foot. There is no road that connects this settlement with Skardu. Its remoteness is probably the reason why this place is so peaceful and pure, still protected from the influence of the outside world. As soon as you enter the village you can experience the calmness and stillness of this place.
The people of this village live a simple life. Grow organic vegetables and fruit. Catch fish from the river. Their houses are simple and they still live in the traditional Balti style without any modern gadgets.

Kalash Tribe: A secret from the Hindu Kush Mountain.

Kalash people lived in the Chitral district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Today, they form the smallest of Pakistan’s minority ethnic groups (numbering between 3,000 to 4,000 people) and can be found in three valleys: Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir. The Kalash language is said to be part of the Dardic group of Indo-Aryan languages.
Earlier, the people followed a simple life, mostly dependent on agriculture and cattle rearing. Buckwheat and other crops were grown in the river valleys. Surrounding orchards provided fruits of various kinds. Milk from the cattle was used to make ghee, butter and cheese. Wine was made from grapes. Food was cooked over wood-fired ovens. They followed a nature-oriented faith, which later some researchers equated with animistic form of worship while others found similarities with ancient Hindu concepts.

The Kalash follow various social customs and rituals. One of them that has been much discussed is the custom of sending menstruating as well as pregnant women to the ‘bashaleni’, a dorm-style building far from the main village. Modern interpreters of culture often refer to it as a form of oppression. But according to Kalash people, it is the women who handle the bulk of everyday work; the time out in the bashaleni is to give the women rest from the daily chores.
The traditions continue even today but have been much influenced by the incursions of modern lifestyle as motorable roads (rough and dusty) have made the remote villages accessible. Shops have opened in the valleys which provide meat and other food items, consumer products, etc. Electrification has made televisions, mobile phones and computers accessible. While men of the Kalash community have long adopted Pakistan’s popular dress (shalwar kameez), the women still wear the traditional attire—a colourful headgear over their intricately braided hair, a voluminous full-length black robe cinched at the waist, and loads of beaded necklaces. Apparently, the embroidery seen on the women’s dress is of later vintage.

The Himalayas and Karakoram
Nanga Parabat & Rakaposhi
An introduction to the culture and high peaks of Pakistan, this trek brings together two of the world’s highest mountain ranges, the Himalayas and the Karakoram in two accessible basecamp treks. Nanga Parbat is the western most high peak of the Himalayan range. Nanga Parbat, the 9th highest in the world, is a colossal and magnificent mountain, in mountaineering circles it is known as King of the mountains for its size and magnificent profile. The Karakoram Range, in contrast, has the greatest concentration of high peaks along with the longest glaciers outside the polar regions. Amongst these is Rakaposhi, the 27th highest peak in the world. Rakaposhi is well recognized for its beauty than its rank might suggest.
