Gulmit aka Gul-e-Gulmit is the headquarter of the Gojal Tehsil, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

Gulmit is a centuries-old historic town, with mountains, peaks and glaciers. It is a tourist spot and has many hotels, shops and a museum.

Gulmit Shawaran (Pologround) is the heart of Gojal Valley, a cherished communal space where people come together to dance, celebrate, grieve, or simply sit and share moments of life.
Originally built during the era when Hunza was a princely state, the Shawaran was a polo ground—a symbol of sport and tradition. While the state and its iconic polo matches have faded into history, the Shawaran has remained a central part of the community's life. It has evolved into a vibrant hub, uniting the village and the broader region through shared experiences.
Over the years, the ground has hosted countless events, from the Silk Route Festival to political and religious gatherings, weddings, funeral prayers, and more. Its history is intertwined with the lives of the people, embodying their collective spirit.
The residents have nurtured this space with dedication, transforming it to meet the community's changing needs. Their efforts—marked by hard work and a deep sense of belonging—have ensured that the Shawaran remains a functional and inclusive public space.
Preserving Gulmit Shawaran is vital. It is not just a physical location but the beating heart of the village, a place that reflects its history, resilience, and unity. Ensuring its longevity is an investment in the cultural and social fabric of the region.

Veteran Chitral polo player Shehzada Sikandar Ul Mulk acknowledges late Shah Gul Aziz of Gulmit for his remarkable horse riding and polo skills.

Twice, while playing polo at the Aga Khan Shahi Shawaran (Polo Ground) in Gilgit, the horses Shah Gul Aziz rode tragically died. He participated in the Shandur Polo Tournament twice and was named Player of the Match nine times.

He also holds the record for scoring five consecutive goals in freestyle polo using the "Doghar" hit.

Muhammad Ayub has spent much of his life outside Pakistan. As a tourism professional, he had the opportunity to travel and live abroad, but he chose to return and lead an organic life in Gulmit.

He says his homeland is sweet and it drew him back, which is why he decided to come home.
