Gilgit Skardu Road is one of the famous roads of Gilgit Baltistan which is know for its sharp curves and narrow width running alongside River Indus.

Gilgit-Baltistan is one of those areas of Pakistan which are gifted with amazing landscapes and natural beauty. This area includes 119 lakes, 5,000 glaciers and the three highest mountain ranges of the world. Two of them are the Karakoram and Himalayas. Most of that area is uninhabited. Baltistan was once a part of Tibet in the past and therefore has the similar culture and language.

It so happened that I had earlier spent a few years of my life in that area due to which I am conversant to some extent in the local language which helped me a lot in exploring the different parts lying in the far flung areas. I had already ventured a number of risky pursuits like swimming in the almost frozen Satpara Lake, solo-hike to Nanga Parbat and trespassing the Deosai Plains but the most memorable and life risking adventure was to trek all alone in the uninhabited mountains of Himalayas for four days and three nights continuously. I had to walk through the treacherous Himalayas to reach the Sermik village on the other side. Skardu lies in the Karakoram whereas Sermik in the Himalayas. A road along with the river Indus leads to Sermik but I had decided to go cross-country trespassing the peaks of those mountains approximately 35 to 40 km away from the main route along the Indus River.

It was September 2011, when I was on an excursion tour to Skardu. Due to the paucity of time, I could not make a thorough planning, however, I was lucky enough to survive in this near-death experience. It was a long trek with steep cliffs and rugged uninhabited mountains. I tried to persuade many people to accompany me but no one was willing to undertake this uphill task which according to them was a suicidal adventure. I was, therefore, left with no choice except to embark upon this mission all alone. I had to walk 85 km on foot in four days while carrying a rucksack of 25 kg, side by side the wild animals like snow leopard, black bear, brown bear, grey wolf and Himalayan vulture. The weather was also very uncertain and could result in dangerous consequences but despite that I continued. I started walking from 8,000 feet and ascended to 16,000 feet in 3 days.

On the third day, I was stranded at a slope of 45°. Now, I was above snowline where there were glaciers even in summer and I could clearly see the peaks of K-2 and Nanga Parbat from that much height. I was stricken with hunger and thirst for thirty and eighteen hours respectively due to the absence of wood and drinkable water. When the sun set, it was like a nightmare. My condition became worst gradually. A time came when I could not even move my body. I was shivering with cold and a layer of ice had taken its form under my tent due to moisture. I could not even judge whether I was alive or dead.

It was a terrible feeling that I was going to die on the same day on which I was born as it was also my birthday. My memories begun to blur. I thought of my parents and realized my mistake. I was experiencing strange visions and sounds which I do not remember well. I pleaded before God to help me. I had some initial symptoms of hypothermia which caused shivering and mental confusion. I was struggling for my life miles away from civilization. Nobody knew where I was and nobody could ever reach there to find me out. I do not remember anything else of that night.

When the dawn broke, I could not believe that I was very much alive. That was the happiest moment of my life. Although I was still feeling very week but somehow I managed to continue the rest of my journey. I reached my destination in a very pathetic condition. I was injured and sick but the hospitable people of Shilla Village which was the first human habitation in that tiring journey took great care of me. They took me to one of their houses and brought me food and even medicines. I can never forget the hospitality of those people.
