Karachi-Glory of the East

1940 The Old Napier Mole Bridge, also known as the Native Jetty Bridge or Netty Jetty Pull, is a historic bridge located in Karachi. It connects the city with the Port of Karachi.
The bridge was originally constructed in the mid-19th century during the British Raj, when a jetty was constructed to connect the city with the harbor. The jetty was a long structure that extended out into the sea, and the bridge was built at the end of the jetty to provide access to the port.
In the early 20th century, the port of Karachi began to expand rapidly. This led to an increase in traffic on the bridge, and by the mid-20th century, it was no longer able to handle the volume of traffic. In 1964, a new wider bridge, Jinnah Bridge, was constructed and replaced the Native Jetty Bridge.

The temple of Lucky Shah Saddar is located near the Lucky springs (Chashma) which flows from the Lucky Mountains. The people visit the spring (chasma) as they consider it good for skin diseases. People come from remote areas for bathing and also carry the water with them. In the past, Hindu community worshiped the springs as Shiva’s. Two temples are located right near the Lakhi springs, one is standing in a good condition, while another temple is in a depleted condition.

Our guests from Germany visited this unseen and lesser explored destination on their way to Sehwan Shareef in Sindh, Pakistan.

Did you know?

The textile industry pumps between 1.22 and 2.93 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. The result is that, by some estimates, the life cycle of textiles (including laundering) accounts for 6.7% of all global greenhouse gas emissions. That’s the equivalent of every person on the planet taking a 2,500-mile flight every year.

To counter fast fashion and the negative impact of the textile industry on the environment, we present an indigenous method of hand crafted block print method using organic dyes from farms of Sindh, Pakistan. This block print ajraks textile work goes back to Pre Harappan culture of the Indus Valley Civilization.

At our industrial unit in Matiari district of Sindh, Pakistan, women of the village use the same method to make ajrak print suits which are in cotton sourced from local farms of Sindh & Punjab province, using natural dyes, with a block printing textile method dating back to Mohenjodaro, Indus Valley Civilization.

To explore agriculture and eco friendly craftwork, we present to you an excursion where you can participate in the process of making your own textile work alongside the artisan. For queries, you can contact us at www.dastaantours.com

As a big supporter of sustainably sourced textiles, we take pride to announce that we have initiated a project in a remote village of Khyber, Sindh, Pakistan where the community lives below $0.25/day and the miserable conditions backed by low literacy rates forced us to brainstorm on something that would resonate with them and voila!

Sindhi Block print work is one of the most exquisite methods of using organically extracted dyes from fruits and trees, using 13 processes of dyeing, drying, washing and heating a cotton fabric to create beautiful imprints on the cloth using creatively carved blocks.

This method of block print textile work goes back 5000 years to the Indus Valley civilization, from where the priest king was excavated and was found to be wearing a similar pattern along with industrial and cotton traces from Mohenjodaro UNESCO world heritage site.

Why did we chose to teach this skill instead of others? As an entrepreneur and a believer on circularity, it's important to initiate projects that:
1. preserve and protect our cultural heritage
2. are eco friendly in their intrinsic nature
3. provide a sustainable source of income on a product that can be easily scalable (every day clothes which is a necessity)

carrying the tradition forward, a sample of women were selected and underwent the initial assessment training. one of the participants was quoted as saying:

'Given the current difficulties in Pakistan for the less fortunate, we eagerly seek opportunities to leverage our skills and hard work for earning. Our women possess valuable skills and with the right platform to polish them, they can derive benefits and improve their lives significantly'.

The next phase of the project, includes a month's long intensive training by a Master Artisan who's been in this art form for generations and would be training them to make them independent artisans.

We aim to not just scale our handicrafts work but to also introduce handicrafts making immersive experiences through Dastaan Tours. Stay tuned for more updates coming your way.

Did you know?

The Indus Valley Civilization is one of the oldest civilizations in human history. It arose on the Indian subcontinent nearly 5,000 years ago — roughly the same time as the emergence of ancient Egypt and nearly 1,000 years after the earliest Sumerian cities of Mesopotamia. The Indus Valley Civilization, in its mature phase, thrived for about 700 years, from around 2600 B.C. to 1900 B.C.

The Indus Valley Civilization derives its name from the Indus River, one of the longest rivers in Asia. Many of the Indus Valley Civilization's large, well-planned cities, such as Mohenjo-Daro, Kot Diji and Chanhu-Daro, were situated along the course of the Indus River, which flows from the mountains of western Tibet, through the disputed region of Kashmir and southwestward before emptying into the Arabian Sea near the modern city of Karachi, Pakistan. Other Indus Valley Civilization cities were located next to different major rivers, such as the Ghaggar-Hakra, Sutlej, Jhelum, Chenab and the Ravi rivers, or on the alluvial floodplains between rivers. Today, much of this area is part of the Punjab region, which is translated as the "land of the five rivers" in what is now Pakistan. Other Indus Valley Civilization cities are located in northwest India, and a few additional cities are in northeastern Afghanistan, near archaeological sites where tin and lapis lazuli, a blue metamorphic rock, were mined.

A British archaeologist named John Marshall continued the work begun by Cunningham when he became director of the Archaeological Survey in 1904. He excavated at Harappa and then later, in 1924, at Mohenjo-Daro ("the mound of the dead" in the Sindhi language), a site that was brought to his attention by local people. Marshall speculated, like Cunningham, that the civilization was likely only perhaps 1,000 years old. But, unlike Cunningham, he noted the many similarities between the archaeological sites of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa, and recognized that the two cities were representative of a single culture, which he termed the Indus Valley Civilization.

Did you know?

Pakistan is the 5th most vulnerable country to climate change and given the fact that tourism development contributes to 1 out of 10 jobs globally, it is important to build local community centric hospitality design models that ensure local land ownership in terms of equity share, promotion of local food, handicrafts and jobs to strengthen the circular economy and setting up structures like the Yurt to ensure minimal carbon footprint, while promising a comfortable stay in the mountainous north of Pakistan.

Pleased to share that the seeds sowed last year in 2022, are nearing fruit and new Yurt properties are opening up in Hunza Valley in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan promising tourism growth, jobs, and preservation of culture.

Comment on this post and share with us some of the best practices that are happening in your country that promote and protect the culture, environment and economy in tourism development.

Happy Poo Festival to all kalash community

Pool festival ( also known as a Poo festival) is celebrated from 12 October to 15 October. It is a kalash religious festival that is only celebrated in Birir valley where they perform their religious rituals.

Every year the Kalash community of Chitral celebrates its annual two-day colorful Kalash 'Poo' festival with traditional fervor in the Kalash Valley. Poo festival is one of the four festivals that the community celebrates every Year. Community people decorate their heads with flowers, sing songs in the local language and perform traditional dances during the 3-day Poo festival.

During this festival old women prepare traditional hats decorated with flowers and put these colorful hats on the heads of young girls who reach the age of 10 years while men and youths participate fully in the celebrations. The festival begins with males going to the altar for prayers, and then they visit fields to collect fruits and grains while singing songs and performing traditional dances. After that they get together in a place and perform cultural dance.

The purpose of the Poo festival is to express gratitude to God for the bountiful summer and the blessings of fruits and cereals. Before the festival, people in the Birir Valley abstain from consuming fruits and cereals, and in the past, severe punishments were imposed on those who broke this tradition. However, after celebrating the festival, they can once again enjoy fruits and cereals. This ancient religious festival, is still celebrated in Birir valley with full of zeals. Every year tourists all over the world come to this area.

In November 2018, the Kalasha culture was listed as 'Intangible Cultural Heritage' by UNESCO

Through sustainable tourism development, we can not only ensure preservation and protection of indigenous cultures in South Asia, but we can also ensure that tourism activities benefits and contributes to local livelihood.

Bathing in Mohenjo-daro some 4,500 years ago was as sophisticated as had ever been the case in human history.

Almost every home in the city had a bathing platform with a water-tight brick floor and drainage system. The Great Bath was only the epitome of a well-executed urban system, not improved upon in the region until modern times. As these captions explain, even the drains were carefully thought out.

Through our trusted services, you not only reconnect with the magnificence of human innovation but also relish the urban planning, design, housing, and well managed drainage systems of the Indus valley civilization 5000 years ago.
