BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF VENUE

1. Katas Raj Temples also locally known as “Qila Katas” are Hindu mandir (temples). It is situated in Katas village 40 kilometers from the Chakwal district of Punjab. It is a dedication to Shiva, the temple has existed since the days of Mahabharata and the Pandava brothers spent a substantial part of their deport at the site.
2. Situated at the foothills of the Salt Range, Khewra Salt Mines are the oldest in the salt mining history of the sub-continent. Salt occurs in the form of an irregular dome like structure. There are seven thick salt seams with cumulative thickness of about 150 meters. At places rock salt is 99% pure. Salt is transparent, white, pink, reddish to beef-color red. In certain horizons it is crystalline. Inside the mine there are beautiful alternate bands of red and white color salt.
3. There are 18 working levels. Cumulative length of all drivages is more than 40 km.
Kallar Kahar is a subdivision of Chakwal District in Punjab. It is famous for its peacocks and a beautiful fresh water lake.

It is, however, very unlikely that the itinerary would be substantially altered; if alterations are necessary the Leader and Guide will decide what is the best alternative, taking into consideration the best interests of the whole group.

The Khewra salt mines was discovered, however, not by Alexander, nor by his allies, but by his army's horses, when they were found licking the stones. Ailing horses of his army also recovered after licking the rock salt stones. During the Mughal era the salt was traded in various markets, as far away as Central Asia. On the downfall of the Mughal empire, the mine was taken over by Sikhs. Hari Singh Nalwa, the Sikh Commander-in-Chief, shared the management of the Salt Range with Gulab Singh, the Raja of Jammu. The former controlled the Warcha mine, while the latter held Khewra. The salt quarried during Sikh rule was both eaten and used as a source of revenue.

In 1872, some time after they had taken over the Sikhs' territory, the British developed the mine further. They found the mining to have been inefficient, with irregular and narrow tunnels and entrances that made the movement of labourers difficult and dangerous. The supply of water inside the mine was poor, and there was no storage facility for the mined salt. The only road to the mine was over difficult, rocky terrain. To address these problems the government levelled the road, built warehouses, provided a water supply, improved the entrances and tunnels, and introduced a better mechanism for excavation of salt. Penalties were introduced to control salt smuggling.

Katas Raj Temples also locally known as “Qila Katas” are Hindu mandir(temples). It is situated in Katas village 40 kilometres from the Chakwal district of Punjab. It is a dedication to Shiva, the temple has existed since the days of Mahabharata and the Pandava brothers spent a substantial part of their deport at the site. The Government of Pakistan is considering nominating the temple complex for World Heritage Site status. It is also suggested to spend about Rs 20 million in three phases for the re-establishment of the complex.

According to historians a story is related to the ponds in it and that is about the death of Shiva’s wife Satti; the story goes that when she died he cried so much and for so long that his tears created two holy ponds, one at Pushkara in Ajmer and the other at Ketaksha, which literally means “raining eyes” in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Ketas is derived. Another version of the legend mentions the two pools at Katasraj and Nainital.

The founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak, is believed to have visited the Katas Raj Temples, as the site became a popular destination for ascetics. The Sikh emperor Ranjit Singh also regularly performed pilgrimage to the site. He visited the site for the Vaisakhi festival in 1806, in December 1818, and again in 1824.
