The board of directors of the Public-Private Partnership Authority (P3A) approved the signing of Rs27.8 billion Sialkot-Kharian Motorway Project.

The approval, first-of-its-kind under the innovative transaction structure, is a major breakthrough in development financing, Planning Minister Asad Umar said while chairing the P3A board’s meeting.

Meanwhile, taking to the social media platform Twitter, Mr Umar said, “Chaired P3A authority board & approved signing the Rs27.8 billion Sialkot-Kharian motorway agreement. It is first project using innovative financial structure using VGF. This will open a major new development financing instrument. Projects in pipeline total Rs 1 trillion”.

The P3A board considered approval of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement for the construction of Sialkot-Kharian Motorway on a PPP basis. The project envisages the construction of a greenfield 69-km-long four-lane toll road on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis at a cost of Rs27.8bn.

Already famed for its civil engineering marvel, the Karakoram Highway (KKH) has now been ranked among the 15 most beautiful roads of the world for its scenic beauty. In its categorisation, Wikicampers, a website providing tourist services in different parts of the world, called the KKH an “ideal setting for the most dizzying road trip.”

“Let’s gain altitude again by taking the second highest asphalt road in the world,” the website said explaining the features of the road.

The KKH connects China to Pakistan while crossing the Karakoram mountain range and running alongside certain peaks over 7,000 metres in height.

The highway is around 1,300KM long which extends from Hasan Abdal to the Khunjrab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, where it crosses into China.

In its documentary, BBC had also called the KKH as one of the highest paved roads on earth which was major trade route between Pakistan and China. It also said the road was completely developed, smooth and safe.

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has announced the lifting of a number of restrictions imposed to control the spread of the coronavirus in the country, including the staggered reopening of educational institutions in districts where the positivity rate is less than five per cent and resumption of outdoor dining.

Certain restrictions will still remain in place. These are:

- All shrines, cinemas, amusement parks and indoor gyms will remain closed. Tracks for walking and jogging will be allowed to remain open with strict adherence to SOPs.

- Indoor dining will remain closed.

- All contact sports, festivals, cultural, musical and other events will be banned.

- All types of indoor and outdoor gatherings, including religious events will be banned.

- Inter-provincial public transport will remain suspended on the weekends from May 22.

The government of Khyber Pukhtunkhwa (KP) has decided to build the country’s first-ever motorsports arena in Kheshgi, Nowshera.

As per reports, the provincial Sports and Tourism Department has shared a detailed plan for the mega-project with the KP Chief Minister, Mahmood Khan. The model indicates that the project consists of a drag race track, practice tracks for on-road and off-road driving, off-road track circuits, asphalt track circuits, practice tracks for on-road and off-road driving, and a go-cart track.

The arena will also have other facilities like workshops, service stations, garages, and petrol stations.
