Afroze Numa, a shepherdess from the Shimshal Valley in Pakistan, has earned a place on BBC's prestigious list of 100 inspiring and influential women for 2023. As one of the last Wakhi shepherdesses, Afroze-Numa has dedicated nearly three decades to caring for goats, yaks, and sheep, inheriting her skills from generations of women in her family. This ancient tradition, once vibrant in the Shimshal Valley, is now on the verge of extinction.

Annually, Afroze-Numa and her fellow shepherdesses lead their flocks to pastures situated at a breathtaking altitude of 4,800 meters (16,000 feet) above sea level. In these high-altitude pastures, they engage in the production of dairy products, which they later barter, all while ensuring their animals are well-fed. The income generated from their efforts has not only brought prosperity to the village but has also enabled them to provide education for their children.

Dir is famous for the locally handmade knives and the local people until recently gifted the traditional souvenir to their friends.
Nawab Umara Khan of Dir, established a factory for manufacturing arms, knives, swords, daggers and knives for which he brought experts from far-flung areas.

The local experts, he said, were preparing best quality of guns, swords, axes and daggers for war. He said later they introduced small knives for use in various kinds of daily work.The small knives, he said, were being prepared from the pieces of remains of swords and daggers. He added these good quality knives became popular in due course of time.

The “cut edge” small knife was particularly famous. Later, the craftsmen were able to inscribe some words, particularly Dir on the knives. When the state of Dir was merged into Pakistan in 1969, the local experts started preparing the knives in their homes instead of factories.

The prices of these handmade knives varies from 250 to 5000 Rs. Locals as well as people from other regions of Pakistan buy these knives as a souvenir.

One of our group on their way to cross Gondogoro La today after visiting K2 Base Camp. Clear weather and team spirit will maximise the chances to cross the magical Gondogoro Pass. Gondogoro Pass is around 5550 meters above sea level which connects the Hushe Valley in Gangche to Baltoro region in Shigar valley.
