One of the most catastrophic floods in Gdansk occurred in April 1829, when 75% of the contemporary city area were under water. Up to present days five marks of the highest water stand survive on the walls of buildings in the Old Town indicating 3.36 m above mean sea level. Here is one of them.

Uphagen family was one of the richest merchants in Gdansk at the end of 18th century. The Uphagen mansion located in a walk distance from the Old Town was built around 1800 it is one of very few authentic residences which survived to the present day.

Good morning directly from Old Town. Today will be a trip about times of my childhood, the time of trade union and the strike in Lenin Shipyard in August 1980. Visit in European Solidarity Center is manatory, but we will se much more for instance traces of 1970 demonstrations. We will eat lunch in local restaurant and discuss about Poland and current politics and challenges. I am afraid 5 hours will be not enough but I will do my best.

High season in ends at the end of September. Depending on weather conditions October is very good time to visit Gdansk. The temperature at the end of August is about 22 degrees C, I like when it is not to hot :-)
