For hundreds of years lighthouses have been essential for safe sea travel. Their bright beacons have helped sailors navigate through the stormy seas. Erected to signal the mouth of a harbor, they have guided ships safely home. Nowadays, without losing their vital role in maritime safety, they have become a tourist attraction.
Celebrating International Lighthouse Day/Weekend, an annual event held all over the world on the third Sunday of August, we present you one of the 15 still-functioning beacons along the Polish coastline: the lighthouse in Czolpino.
Standing in the heart of the Slowinski National Park, Czolpino Lighthouse has stood over the Baltic coastline since 1875. Originally oil burning it was converted to electric operation in the mid-1930s. The 25-metre brick tower sits on a high dune, in the middle of a pine forest and away from people. After climbing to its top balcony you will be rewarded with stunning views across the moving dunes, scenic beaches and pine woods of the Slowinski National Park, which are a hundred years old.
Only a 2-hour drive from Gdansk, Czolpino Lighthouse is a perfect place for a quick visit or a proper refreshing time out. It’s also a great base for walking and exploring nature trails and the serene scenery of one of the most unique landscapes in Europe.
